Hot Springs, Arkansas is known for many things – as the childhood home of Bill Clinton, as the former site of Major League Baseball’s spring training (in the era of Babe Ruth), for its beautiful national park, and for its mineral springs and the splendid early 20th century bathhouses built to accommodate legions of spa-goers. A witty creature feature set in a multi-occupancy building in Los Angeles that takes aim at unscrupulous landlords and finance bros This arachnid-themed horror is fairly traditional in terms of its structure, core monster threat and scares-to-laughs ratio, but there are a few winningly modern touches. For starters, there is a very contemporary anticapitalist undertow: it all takes place in a single multi-occupancy building (supposedly in Los Angeles, though the whole film was filmed in Portugal) owned by a slimy landlord (William Miller), who rails against the city’s “socialist” local council making it harder for him to rip off his tenants. And the tenants range across the spectrum of income levels and careers, in a way which is directly correlated to how sympathetic they are and therefore how likely to get spider-bit. So you shouldn’t get too attached any of the characters who work in finance, are “influencers”, or in any way act high and mighty towards the building’s long suffering supervisor Serena (Matilda Lutz), a tomboy-femme girl in shorts and biker boots who is also an aspiring musician. Serena is the one who finds the first victim, a UCLA professor in arachnology who is killed by an exotic spider which grows to extra-large proportions, from a colony ruled by a super-sized queen that appears semi-sentient. (ECM) The Italian trumpeter’s group – featuring an old friend – rip through originals and free improvisation while balancing late-Miles funk with excellent vocals and horn ballads Miles Davis was the gamechanger behind at least three landmark transformations in jazz-making methods between the late 1940s and the 1960s – yet he was perhaps too instinctively lyrical, and too worldly, to take the freedoms he helped unleash too far from the marketplace. In 1960s Europe, a different story emerged, as African American free jazz innovations by Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and others flowed into cultural traditions from Scandinavia to Spain, Soviet Russia and East Germany, inviting unions with contemporary classical and local folk music along the way. But Miles’s unique sound remained as a key inspiration to two gifted trumpeters in Poland’s Tomasz Stańko (1942-2018) and the Italian Enrico Rava, even as they also drew on European eclecticism. Rava continues to rip through the walls of linear post-bop mazes, and use raw sound as if it were his everyday speech, just as Miles once did – as confirmed by Corners, recorded with his young Fearless Five group plus his longtime friend Joe Lovano on saxophones. Amar Dedic was stopped by police in Northumberland after being seen with a bow and arrows (Press Association) Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic sparked a major police operation after he was spotted carrying a bow and arrows near a reservoir in Northumberland. Dedic, who joined Newcastle in a £30 million deal from Benfica in the summer, was reported by a member of the public who saw him and a friend walking with the weapon near the small village of Harlow Hill. According to the Daily Mail, police dispatched several vehicles to the area, including some that were armed response units. Dedic and his friend were stopped by police before officers searched a car and seized the bow and arrows. Get personalised updates on your favourite club Sign up to our daily football newsletter, pick your team and get the latest news sent directly to your inbox every morning. After their investigation, officers deemed that there was no threat to the public, although enquiries are ongoing. Dedic and his friend are said to have fired some arrows while out in the countryside, although it has not been determined what they were aiming at. A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: ‘Shortly after 1.55pm on Wednesday, we received a report of two men carrying a bow and arrows while walking along a track by the reservoir on Military Road in the Harlow Hill area. ‘Officers attended and subsequently stopped a vehicle in the Darras Hall area and seized a bow and arrows. At this stage, it is understood they were for recreational use and there was no threat to the public. Enquiries are ongoing.’ The Daily Mail adds that Dedic will not face disciplinary action from Newcastle over the incident. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! For the FA Cup, the early rounds are the juice. The first round proper to be played out over the long weekend is looking, well, proper. And on Saturday at 3pm GMT, a proper time, 31 ties will kick off. No VAR, either. At the stage when the bottom two Football League divisions join the competition, focus remains on those non-league clubs fighting for the honour of the pyramid … John Aloisi winning or choking the Chinese Super League, a league so ‘super’ that nine of all 16 clubs in it started the season on negative points due to ‘match-fixing, gambling and corruption’ by the way, and the league leaders not even scoring a single goal in seven hours, is really not something to lay upon someone with a bad hangover. Apropos of nothing, if anyone has any objections to my views on the Chinese Super League, please address any correspondence to: Mr K Mbappé, Madrid (there’s no point two of us getting into trouble)” – Noble Francis. As a man of a certain age frequently being reminded of how out of date I am, the recent readers’ letters regarding technical solutions to shirt-pulling (Football Daily letters passim) concerns triggered distant memories. In late 1991 I was working in the Patents Advice Centre, Newcastle Central Library. A gentleman asked for help to possibly patent an ‘invention’: a football shirt with the seams held together by Velcro, so that any tug would ‘open’ the seam and provide clear evidence to the referee of illegal cloth gathering. As I helped him search for possible equivalent innovations in our paper database (yes kids!) we chatted amiably until I asked how he had come to this seemingly simple yet brilliant innovation. He paused, reddened and began to exhale with elevated pressure: ‘Did you see Arsenal the other night? Tony Adams? Disgraceful. It should never be allowed! In fact, with this shirt it won’t be, and Arsenal will have to learn to defend decently!’ Happy memories, obviously irrelavant…

The star is excellent in her return as a midlife assassin. But her whiny son is so annoying, the drama disintegrates into a soggy spy sitcom – he might just have killed the whole show So there’s an assassin, right? Except, it’s not just AN assassin, it’s THE assassin. The world’s top assassin. Going round doing the most elite assassinations you can think of, being paid millions to kill super-dangerous people. Right? OK, But … it’s a woman – no, not like in Killing Eve. Well, OK, it is quite a lot like Killing Eve but wait: it’s not just a woman, it’s a sarcastic middle-aged British woman who hasn’t got time for anyone’s shit, And she’s got a difficult relationship with her adult son who doesn’t know she’s a killer! Boom! One day a few years ago, prolific TV thriller writers Harry and Jack Williams (since The Missing in 2014 they’ve created Rellik, The Widow, Liar, Baptiste, Angela Black, Boat Story and The Tourist) pitched something like the above in a meeting with Prime Video, and walked out of the room with a big bag of money and a commission for another of their slick, twisty dramas. With Keeley Hawes as sardonic mercenary Julie Green and Freddie Highmore as her wan, bookish journalist son Edward, the premise of The Assassin just about survived a chaotic first season that benefited from placing its two leads inside a labyrinthine conspiracy. The whirlwind eight-month romance included a Dubai wedding, adopting a dog, getting tattoos dedicated to each other, and Lee going ‘missing’ before winding up in prison. Katie, 48, was recently spotted cosying up to another man and Lee, 43, has now unfollowed her on Instagram – she was the only account he followed. She later clarified that Felix Henderson, who she was seen with at the Glamour Awards, is just a work colleague but has now given more insight into her love life. ‘Just to address my situation,’ the reality star wrote in an Instagram story. ‘I’ve been married, had the family life. While fans and family members had been sceptical of the Dubai businessman from the start, Katie had repeatedly defended him. Even after he ‘went missing’, turning out to be banged up in Al Awir prison, Katie continued to invest in their relationship until she couldn’t anymore. The final straw appeared to be when he failed to turn up for a joint interview with Good Morning Britain, with Katie confessing, ‘I love him but who is he?’ In her post, she asserted that she is ‘not interested in meeting anyone else, engaging with anyone, messaging anyone, or going on any dating apps or dates.’ Katie added: ‘I’m content, happy, and love my own company and have fantastic friends and family.’ To view this video please enable JavaScript, and…
