Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Saturday, Oct 31 at 4am ET / 8am GMT / 7pm AEDTWatch FREE on Tapmad (Pakistan)Unlock your free stream with NordVPN (save up to 75%)Watch Pakistan vs Sri Lanka in the final of their 2026 ODI tri-series, as the two sides from the subcontinent face off at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore with preparations continuing in earnest ahead of next year's 50-over World Cup.Despite the chaos that constantly dogs Pakistani cricket off the field, they've been the best of the three sides on it during this two-week, three-team tournament. They got off to a storming start a pair of comfortable wins, thanks to a century from Salman Ali Agha against Sri Lanka in the first, and a six-wicket haul from spinner Arafat Minhas against England in the second. The most remarkable innings from Shadab Khan helped them to another win over England, his 113* from 96 balls getting the Men in Green over the line by one wicket. Now they have the chance to give their long-suffering fans a reason to smile in the final on Saturday. It looked like Sri Lanka's tournament was heading for the doldrums when England captain Harry Brook smashed a double century against them in their second game. What followed was quite extraordinary, as bulk runs from Pavan Rathnayake, Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka helped them chase down a mammoth 429 with just one ball remaining. A convincing eight-wicket follow-up victory over the hosts secured their place in Saturday's final. It may not be a squad of the same vintage of their famous 1996 World Cup triumph, but the Lions might just be hitting their stride at the right time ahead of the 2027 competition.Read on as we explain how to watch Pakistan vs Sri Lanka online, on TV and potentially for free wherever you are. The Kangaroos are safely through to the semi-finals, whereas Cook Islands will head home following this match after losing their opening two games.Australia remain heavy favorites to claim a fourth successive Rugby League World Cup title, but they have yet to hit top gear at the tournament. After edging past New Zealand 24-22, they were staring down the barrel of a shock defeat by Fiji last time out in Brisbane when their opponents crossed to go 20-12 up in the second half – only for the try to be disallowed and the Kangaroos to eventually triumph 36-22. While certain elements of the performance were unconvincing, there were also positives to take, with debutant Sam Walker scoring 16 points. Coach Kevin Walters has opted for eight changes with Reece Walsh returning at fullback, Tom Dearden at halfback and Ethan Strange named on the bench ahead of a potential Test debut. The big storyline for Cook Islands is former Aussie Valentine Holmes returning to face the country for whom he won two World Cups with. The NRL star still holds the record for the most tries in a single match at the tournament, crossing six times against Fiji in 2017, and will relish facing Australia in Townsville, the city of his birth. Cook Islands briefly threatened a stunning victory against New Zealand last time out when they roared back from 12-0 down to lead 16-12, with Esom Ioka scoring a hat-trick. However, they ultimately lost 82-16 and now face the daunting task of trying to stop the 12-time champions. Here's how to watch Australia vs Cook Islands from anywhere in the world – with FREE Rugby League World Cup 2026 streams explained. Can you watch Australia vs Cook Islands for free? Long before anyone trained a model on customer data, the marketing data business worked out the terms for pooling it. Catalog retailers in the 1990s joined data cooperatives that combined their transaction histories so each member could find new buyers, and the arrangements held together because the rules were blunt. A retailer contributed data to receive modeled prospects; no member got a rival's customer file; and a company that stopped contributing stopped receiving. Card fraud consortia run on similar give-to-get terms. Nobody would call these systems elegant, but every participant understood the trade.Software vendors building AI features are now running into the same question, usually without the rules. Traditional software sat on top of a customer's data and operated on it. AI products learn from data, and on a multi-tenant platform, that learning rarely stays within a single account. One company's records can sharpen the enrichment, lead scoring, and recommendations delivered to thousands of others. A vendor can improve its product for every customer by relying on the work of a few, and most contracts say nothing about whether that trade is fair. The customer still owns its data in any legal sense. Ownership alone doesn't answer who benefits.Users push back on sharing hard-earned data HubSpot learned how touchy the question has become when it announced plans to pool enrichment data across customer accounts, including business contact details, employer information, and email deliverability signals, to improve prospect records platform-wide. Every account was in by default. Within days, the company dropped the plan and promised that any future enrichment feature built on customer data would be opt-in. HubSpot had stated clearly that core CRM records would never be shared without permission, so privacy in the usual sense wasn't what upset the sales and RevOps teams, who pushed back. Their concern was harder to answer. Years of work spent cleaning and enriching their own contact data were about to improve the prospecting tools available to every other customer, competitors included, and nobody had asked what they would get for it. The product terms that allowed the change had been updated nearly two years before most customers heard about them.AI creates accidental data companiesPlenty of software companies adding AI tools have never had to think this way. They are becoming data companies one model at a time, often without deciding to. Whether a customer's information feeds a shared model is often determined by a product team working toward a launch date rather than by anyone who owns the commercial relationship, and the answer is expressed in terms few buyers read. McKinsey's 2026 survey on AI trust found that only about 30% of organizations have reached a mature level in AI strategy, governance, and controls. Pooled training data tends to fall between legal, product, and sales, with no single team feeling responsible for explaining it.The need for strong exit clauses Buyers will force the issue long before regulators do. Security certifications and uptime guarantees became standard contract language over the past decade because enough customers asked for them that vendors stopped arguing, and AI data terms are heading down the same road. Procurement teams are starting to ask whether their data trains or enriches models used by other customers, whether participation is opt-in, and whether it can be switched off later without losing core features. The more demanding buyers want to know what a contributing customer receives that a non-contributor doesn't.Exit terms will be the hardest part to write. A customer can cancel a contract and demand its records back, but data that has already shaped a production model can't be cleanly pulled out again. Retraining is expensive, and removing one customer's influence from a live model remains an unsolved problem for most vendors. A vendor can honestly say it deleted every record a customer ever uploaded and still be running a model those records helped build. Contracts written for storage assumed that deleting data ended its use. Contracts written for AI will have to say plainly what persists after a customer leaves, and whether the customer agreed to it when it signed.Opt-in consent answers part of the question. A checkbox tells a vendor it may use the data, but it says nothing about the return, and a customer who opts in for nothing in particular has made a poor bargain, even if it's a legal one. The old cooperatives signed up members because members could see exactly what they were getting.Vendors that explain their data economics before customers ask will have an easier time at every renewal. The explanation belongs in the product and in the contract, and it should cover which customer data feeds shared models, what those models produce, and what contributors get back. Security questionnaires were once a formality, until buyers made them a condition of the sale. Pooled data terms are on the same schedule, and vendors that write clear ones now will set the standard that the rest of the market will follow.

It's the largest cryptocurrency theft in history: hackers from North Korea allegedly swiped $6.36 billion in funds from Binance in the space of just 20 minutes, which has left customers reeling and the financial industry in shock. The heist raises all kinds of questions about how this was allowed to happen, what might happen next, and whether Binance customers are going to get any of their stolen money back. Even if you never owned any cryptocurrency before, there are bigger questions too — like what this means for global financial stability, and what the aftershocks might be for everyone outside the Binance world.Looking for a quick five-minute primer on the Binance hack? We've been speaking to industry experts to get some answers...1. What actually happened?(Image credit: Getty Images / Dan Kitwood)The basics are now pretty clear — $6.36 billion in cryptocurrency was stolen from the Binance exchange in the space of just 20 minutes. Security analysts are pointing the blame at North Korea's TraderTraitor hacking group, which has a history of this kind of heist. What's less clear is exactly how the hackers got access. Early reports identified a Binance employee's compromised laptop as a potential way in, though it now seems there's more to the story."A compromised laptop may explain where an attack started, but it does not, on its own, explain how billions of dollars could leave an exchange," Pieter Arntz, researcher at cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes, told TechRadar. "The real question is what allowed that initial foothold to become access to withdrawal systems — and which safeguards failed to stop unauthorized transactions.""According to blockchain analysts, the attacker spent at least a day and a half preparing, including testing their tools on public blockchains where anyone could see," Ben Bernstein, manager of cybersecurity advisors at Huntress, told TechRadar. "Then most of the $6.3 billion left Binance's wallets in about 20 minutes. That's common in attacks we investigate. The attacker does most of the work long before anything is stolen."2. Will anyone get their money back?Binance says customers will be refunded (Image credit: Shutterstock / Diego Ioppolo)Binance has promised to reimburse customer losses through its backup and emergency funds, but in the meantime we're seeing deposits and withdrawals frozen on the platform while the hack is investigated. It's a warning that even the largest and most sophisticated exchanges can still be vulnerable."Binance says it'll cover every cent," Nigel Green, CEO of the deVere Group, said in a press statement. "I hope so. The emergency fund is around $1.2 billion and the gap is several times bigger, so the rest has to come from the company’s own balance sheet. The market will want to see the numbers, and the new proof of reserves can’t come soon enough.""Long term holders have just been reminded, very expensively, why keys kept offline matter. Crypto has spent years pushing back against heavy regulation, and plenty of those arguments were fair. This one's harder to argue with. Platforms holding billions of other people's money need enforceable security standards. I expect regulators in the US, Europe and Asia will likely move faster after this week," he added. In the meantime, the US Secret Service has said in a statement that it's "working around the clock" with partners in the private sector "to identify, freeze, trace, and recover funds" that have been stolen from Binance.3. What follow-up scams might appear?(Image credit: Getty Images)Whether you're a Binance customer or not, you need to keep your wits about you over the next few days. It's likely that scams trying to literally cash in on the hack will start appearing — perhaps warning you that you need to quickly claim refunds, lock your account against a particular threat, or go through a bogus verification process."Criminals routinely use major breaches as a hook for phishing campaigns," Dray Agha, senior manager for tactical response at Huntress, told TechRadar. "Consumers should be highly suspicious of any emails or messages claiming to be from Binance offering urgent account recovery steps. You must only check your account status through the official application or website rather than clicking links in unsolicited messages."According to the team at Huntress, you should watch out for social media posts, emails, and text messages that use the Binance hack as a hook — perhaps a fake news story suggesting that now's the time to buy crypto, while prices are down. As always, think twice about following links or entering sensitive information into online forms and portals you're not familiar with.4. How does this affect the average consumer? The hack shouldn't give you any financial surprises (Image credit: Getty Images)If you don't own any cryptocurrency, the good news is that you're largely going to be unaffected by what's happened here. There's not going to be a stock market crash, or a run on the banks, or a global recession — not because of this hack, at least. However, it's always worth weighing up your own personal privacy and security setup."If you don't own crypto, the direct impact on you is small," Ben Bernstein from Huntress told us. "Your bank account and your card are not affected by this. The bigger takeaway for consumers is that attackers often get in by targeting people rather than technology, through a convincing email, a fake login page or a phone call from someone posing as IT support," he said."That makes security awareness everyone's job, at home and at work. If you pause before you click a link, approve a login or share a code, you're making it harder for an attacker, whether they're after your savings or your employer's systems," he added.5. What does this mean for the future of money?(Image credit: Getty Images / Dan Kitwood)This clearly raises a lot of questions about the safety of cryptocurrency and the exchanges that it sits on — and of course it's far from the first crypto heist we've seen. In the longer term, it may lead to less confidence in crypto as a whole, but the experts we spoke to don't think it will bring the industry down. What will be important is making sure the risks of this happening again are minimized as much as possible."Despite the scale of the theft, this is not a threat to global financial stability," Feike Hacquebord, Principal Threat Researcher at TrendAI, told TechRadar. "Around half of the stolen funds have already been frozen, while the regulated banking system is well equipped to absorb a shock of this size. This is a major crisis for Binance, not a crisis for the global financial system.""The change I’d like to see, for crypto firms, banks and every other business, is working on the assumption that someone will get in eventually," Ben Bernstein told us. "Keeping attackers out matters, but it isn't enough on its own. Companies also need someone watching around the clock, especially for logins and account activity that don't look right, so they can find and remove an intruder before the money starts moving," he added.

The Man Utd academy product is one of countless Red Devils to have flourished since leaving the Theatre of Dreams, which is anything but that these days. The squabble between Bruno Fernandes and Michael Carrick, who remains "in charge" for now, was the perfect metaphor for United's malaise, a fan-favorite turned coach and their most important player taking chunks out of each other in a very public sphere, as the club's hierarchy continue to evade any real scrutiny. Neither of them has come out of this unscathed.Fernandes' trial by social media has been brutal, while Carrick cut off his nose to spite his face by leaving his captain on the bench for last weekend's total annihilation by Bournemouth. It was their sixth defeat of the season from 12 games, and they're now just one point clear of the Premier League relegation zone. But at least they didn't lose to Tottenham. Xabi Alonso got a small taste of Chelsea's cut-throat culture in the wake of their second home defeat to Spurs since 1990, a result that's cast an unflattering light over the mixed start to his tenure. Only 17th-placed Crystal palace and newly promoted Ipswich have conceded more goals than the Blues this term, but only Brighton and Man City have outscored them. With five league goals and three assists to his name, Joao Pedro is a huge miss, but they have a ready-made replacement in Welbeck, who's scored eight goals in 20 appearances against Man Utd. Demand for AI continues to grow, but more AI doesn't mean better returnsBusinesses are underestimating costs as they go from pilot to productionSeat- and consumption-based pricing both have their places, it seemsBusinesses are at risk of confusing generic AI adoption within their workforces with actual meaningful value, Oracle's Head of AI Strategy Hammad Hussain warns, with many of its customers now struggling to manage increasingly unpredictable AI costs. We already know that three in five businesses agree unpredictable billing hikes cause them more strain than a higher but flatter baseline cost, thanks to a recent Splunk study, but it seems cloud vendors already know this too.Speaking with a group of journalists at Oracle's recent AI World event, Hussain explained that while demand for AI continue to grow, businesses need to focus more on measurable outcomes than just adopting AI for the sake of it.AI adoption does not equal value"One of the fatal mistakes that clients can do... is they might perceive usage as value," Hussain said. "And that's not the case."Companies should consider whether they're creating more experiences, more efficiencies, more products, and so one – rather than just whether they're using more AI, at the risk of doing so blindly. This all comes as they struggle to maintain a sort of balancing act between investing enough in AI to make a meaningful impact on business outcomes while still maintaining cost visibility and control. It's that second element that many are now struggling with.In fact, even the largest enterprises and early AI adopters who have experienced considerable success are looking at ways to scale back costs and only spend on the AI that's necessary.Unpredictable costs are now becoming a major focusMultiple studies have already uncovered the impact that unpredictable costs are having on AI consumers, and this follows a period of transition from flat, seat-based models to variable, consumption-based pricing as AI vendors themselves look to make the economics work.Hussain warned that many customers risk underestimating the financial implications of rolling out tools on a bigger scale. "The production economics is quite different from pilot economics," he added.Looking ahead, Hussain implied that a hybrid approach is emerging as a 'best of both worlds' scenario. Companies can still use the latest and most advanced frontier models to handle their biggest workloads, but some of the lighter work might just need conventional CPUs without the expense of GPUs and advanced AI altogether.Somewhere in the middle seems to be a new solution that we're only really starting to see at scale this year – leaning on open-weight models."One way of [balancing costs and impact] is also using dedicated AI clusters, where they pay fixed amounts for a cluster, which might have open-weight models, so they're not paying per tokens."Hussain explained that having access to a pre-defined set of compute resources and a slightly less advanced model gives companies a space to throw their less demanding work for a cheaper – but importantly, more predictable – price.Unlike accessing a third-party model through an API, running an open-weight model on their own dedicated infrastructure allows organizations to process certain workloads without incurring extra costs for tokens.Of course, they'll still need to pay for the underlying compute infrastructure, but it offers a far more predictable and budgeting-friendly cost.Oracle's AI Strategy Head doesn't expect consumption-based pricing to disappear altogether. The pendulum has already swung from seats to tokens, but he now sees it swinging back to settle somewhere in the middle, where organizations will mostly be given the opportunity to choose which pricing strategy fits their needs best."We started off with fixed pricing," Hussain shared. "But then we realized that some are heavy users and some are low users."More AI doesn't mean higher or quicker ROIBut regardless of how customers choose to pay for their AI, Hussain argues that the real measure of success should be the returns those investments actually make, and more isn't always better.Defining AI ROI has been an unresolved topic for years, now, but Hussain offered a glimpse into some of the calculations companies can make to both determine whether they're been a success, but also to help guide their strategies initially. On the upper side of a fraction-like equation Hussain detailed were benefit and adoption – AI investments need to create some sort of benefit, whether that's unlocking more productivity, driving more revenue or something else – but workers also need to adopt the new AI. "Benefit multiplied by zero is zero," he warned. But then you've got the balancing act on the bottom half of that fraction – cost. Direct costs that stem from buying AI and compute, but also indirect costs relating to upgrading infrastructure and training employees. Our discussion also revealed that only around 20% of organizations capture 75% of the value, and Hussain thinks he knows why."The thing which separates that 20% from the rest of the 80% is the fact that they can rewire their business, or they're truly reimagining their business using AI."The future might not be so clear, but the underlying message is – personalization is key, and emerging hybrid approaches probably hold at least some of the keys to that. That's hybrid in terms of how much workload actually needs to be handled by AI in the first place, but also hybrid in the way that consumers actually pay for their compute.Ultimately, with AI costs becoming harder to predict, the most successful adopters will become the ones who find the most effective ways to turn investments into ROI – not just the ones that have the biggest budgets and the most extensive AI portfolios.

Apple AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging reviewApple's second-cheapest new AirPods are a fantastic little buy. But you'd be forgiven for overlooking them given Apple's curious naming strategy. After all, the last time Apple unveiled two sets of entry-level AirPods, one had ANC and the other didn't — easy to work out where the extra money went there. But with AirPods 5, both the base model and the step-up option tote ANC. So what's the deal? It's not as simple as it first appears. As the name implies, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging offer a better case that charges wirelessly. But what the name doesn't tell you is that here there are a few other perks the cheaper model lacks, which I think makes this set far worthier of the nominal extra fee. Said case also includes a speaker for audible pairing status pings and Find My help, for instance, which you won't get with the cheaper set. Then, there's the force sensor with volume swipe functionality in both stems, for playback and call handling. To clarify, you can't change the volume on-ear with the cheaper model, which for me is a huge deal — as a woman who often commutes alone at night, I don't want to be digging my phone out if I don't have to, thank you very much. Lastly, there's an extra hour's playback available to you in this model, with ANC deployed. Don't get overly excited; said figure is only upped to five hours from the buds (or up to 22 with the case) from four and, for me, this is AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging's biggest issue. Almost any price-competitive rival can beat that, in 2026. But now that I'm done with my main criticism, let's get to the praise — there's plenty of it. Some of the best budget earbuds around? Oh definitely. For iPhone owners, there's nothing else that can cut through the noise for this money. (Image credit: Future)More on differences between AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless ChargingKicking things off with their design, the case is tiny. I've put it next to my regular reference Technics EAH-AZ100 below, but even that doesn't really do its neatness justice. The magnets also snap shut reassuringly so you won't lose an earbud; I've slung this charging nest in my pocket for a few weeks now without issue. The buds are Apple's open-fit option (think a much-tweaked update on the company's wired EarPods) so there are no ear tips to switch out. You either love this design or hate it. I love it since it means the buds sit slightly less intrusively in the ear, with no 'twist to lock' screwing them into my ear canals to contend with. However, I wouldn't recommend this slightly more relaxed fit for energetic sports use. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging are secure in the ear, but only to a point. Why? Because you're not creating a seal between a silicone ear tip and the skin of your ear canal. Also, I occasionally found switching between iOS devices, even using the same Apple account, wasn't as seamless as billed. I actually had to reset them once (it's simple, you just double-tap the front of the case a few times, 'til the light glows orange) and even then, the promised pop-up telling you, 'AirPods used on another device. Connect?' isn't always forthcoming. It's a small issue at this level but still, it's my job to notice. (Image credit: Future)Another note on the buds: I find that making a 'pinch' shape with my thumb and index finger to swipe up or down along the indent/force sensor of the stem is the best way to change the volume on these particular AirPods. Apple suggests keeping your thumb on the bottom of the stem to steady them, then swiping up using only your index or middle finger. What I'm trying to say is, there's a knack to this and you need to find your own path with it, but it'll be worth the rehearsal.Said stems also can be squeezed in a more traditional way, to perform every action you'll want. To play or pause audio, you press a stem once; to skip forward (next track) you double-press a stem; skipping back (previous track) is a triple-press. You can also press a stem when a call comes in to answer it, press and hold to summon Siri (or not, in your settings), start a Live Translation by pressing and holding both stems, or scroll through Noise Cancellation profiles with a press and hold of one stem. It's a comprehensive solution — and since I've just hit on Live Translation, let's send some more praise that way, shall we? (Image credit: Future)Thanks to the inclusion of Apple's H2 chip, not only do these buds offer Personalized Spatial Audio, you can also chat about the bus timetable in Northern Spain with a local Asturian. You'll need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer and you need to download certain language packs (one for the prep-and-packing stage of your trip, rather than when you're on vacation and without wi-fi) on iOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence turned on. It's largely a case of opening the Settings app on your iPhone, tapping your AirPods, tapping 'Live Translation (Beta)' and going from there, but worth knowing you can't simply have it from the box. Once up and running, though, it's a dream. I used it with ANC on and Conversation Awareness also toggled on (this, while not exclusive to AirPods 5, is an excellent feature that lowers your music's volume and pipes in external voices when you start speaking). I happen to have a partner who speaks fluent Spanish. Squeeze both stems of the AirPods 5 and behold! See some snippets of our conversation, which is also piped into the buds vocally with very little lag. Apple Apple Apple Apple Apple Apple Apple Apple I mention my conversation with my partner because, when I deployed ANC to try to talk to him (in either of its Adaptive or Regular variants) I simply couldn't hear his voice. It was quite astonishing. I cannot explain the wizardry Apple's invoked to make the ANC 50% better over the AirPods 4 any more than I can explain the driver size under the hood, because Apple hasn't said. But I can at least vouch for the truth in the company's statement. Most household noises, street life or hubbub of your everyday will melt away here at the tap of a finger, if you want them gone. Call handling? Good and clear during my testing, both for callers and for me, the wearer. Head gestures regarding said calls? They're fine, but you need to be quite animated with your head nods and I tend to operate on a more subtle level — when AirPods can respond to an eyebrow raise over who's decided to pick up the phone after all this time, we'll be in business. And sonically, they're a triumph for the level — yes, despite their lack of hifalutin codec support. Fontaines D.C.'s Six Shot Morning is as darkly vivacious as it is foreboding, with Grian Chatten's oddly angelic bass registers coming in centrally and conveying knowledge that belies his years. In Brandon Flowers' Tiger's Blood there's a delightful accuracy to the various guitars in my left and right ear. Sure, they're not for critical listening — if you wanted flat, untouched detail you won't look to these earbuds — but for expanse, impetus and good old-fashioned fun, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging won't let you down. There's space around each musical instrument, underpinned by the kind of layering you'd normally find in much pricier options. Yes, if I switch out to my much pricier Technics buds, there's an extra ounce of detail to the intake of Flowers' breath or the inflections at the end of his new-found (to us) country vocal, but that's hardly a fair test. For an energetic listen that has you living in your head and reveling in music, these unassuming little Apple buds have really surprised me. And given my 'good, not fantastic' take on AirPods 4, I hadn't expected to like them as much as I do. Bravo, Apple. Apple AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging review: price & release date$149 / £139 / AU$249Announced on September 9, 2026 (released September 18, 2026) This is 2026, I don't need to tell you that there's a lot of competition at the $149 / £139 / AU$249 level for a set of wireless earbuds. And it's not just 'traditional' sets now, open earbuds such as the similarly priced Sennheiser Accentum Clip are taking up a significant chunk of the market too. And in the over-ear arena, the also-new Sony WH-CH730N can be yours for a little more or a little less, depending on where you live (at $179 / £99.99 / AU$229). In all honesty, Apple's closest competition here is probably its own entry-level AirPods 5, at a slightly cheaper $129 / £129 / AU$219 or possibly even its AirPods Pro 3, which will set you back a little under $249 / £219 / AU$429 now and add a heart-rate monitor, Apple's extensive Hearing Health suite and, er, ear tips… The bulk of this review should serve to explain why I think Apple's AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging outdo the former for sound-per-pound value. And unless you want to use them for workouts or for the excellent hearing-help tech, I'd even suggest you go for these over the Pro set. As people delegate more abstract reasoning to large language models (LLMs), the precise meaning and nuance of our words can get lost in endless interpretation as LLMs repeatedly process, summarize, and recirculate these words. Humans aren’t robots that formalize all of their sentences. Instead, we converse with some unwritten cultural and situational tones. For example, in some cultures, asking “Have you eaten yet?” doesn’t literally mean asking if the person has eaten food, but is another polite way of saying “How are you doing?” An LLM may miss this nuance in an essay, interpreting it literally and giving a wrong output. If AI Model A interprets “Have you eaten yet?” literally, it then passes that same interpretation to Model B, which then passes it to Model C. At the third layer, the nuance gets lost. The AI models provide a coherent output, but one that’s out of the cultural and situational context. This is an example of semantic erosion, where definitional precision and cultural nuance gradually get lost as AI models recirculate interpretations and ideas. Semantic erosion is a structural error, not a "hallucination" where AI models invent wrong facts. Instead, the output remains clear, but with context stripped away, the meaning changes. It’s a major bottleneck that LLM developers have to work around. Let’s deeply examine this issue and how developers are innovating their way around it.Semantic erosion explained in detailAs LLMs increasingly process more information, small misinterpretations can compound and affect output quality. LLMs can misread human context or substitute it with a synonym, generating output that may be fluent and grammatically correct but not what the user actually desires. Above, we gave an example of “Have you eaten?” being misinterpreted in the cultural context, but let’s see another fitting example.Picture a company’s annual financial statement, and a multi-agent AI model is asked to analyze this statement to extract key insights. Agent A misinterprets “net profit” as “operating profit” even when they aren’t the same (operating profit is the company’s total profit from its business activities, while net profit is what’s left after subtracting taxes, depreciation, debt servicing, and other costs from the operating profit).Agent A passes this misinterpretation to Agent B, degrading the data. After Agent C, D, and E analyze the financial statement, the extracted insights will be wrong. This isn’t an explicit error, but a quiet one the user can easily overlook, and wrong insights can cause wrong decisions. If left unchecked, semantic erosion reduces the accuracy of AI model outputs. A little misinterpretation here, another there, and another here, and AI models can become too unreliable to be trusted by users, so LLM developers have to tackle this problem. The intent compression paradoxHumans aren’t robots that speak programmatically. We add emotions, understanding, and cultural and environmental context, where just the voice tone can change the meaning of a sentence. For example, “We need to talk” can indicate care when spoken in a gentle tone but signal confrontation when spoken in a loud, high-pitched tone. “You can say that again” indicates friendly agreement when spoken in a warm, soft tone, but can sound confrontational when spoken loudly. The thing is, humans mimic how we speak to each other when speaking with AI models, even though these models don’t understand emotion. AI models analyze words statistically and give quantitative output. This creates a paradox where the more optimized an AI model is to provide the most analytical answers, the more aggressively it may misinterpret human intent. It’s known as the intent compression paradox.LLM developers usually compress prompts to save token costs, but as human intent gets heavily compressed, there’s a higher chance of models generating unreliable answers. To compensate for the compression, AI models may even generate longer yet less direct output that doesn’t fit the intent. Strategies to address semantic erosion and the intent compression paradoxAbove, we’ve explained the problem in detail. Now let’s look at the strategies AI model developers apply to address the problem. How do they avoid misinterpreting human intent? How do AI models avoid intent compression while still saving token costs? Let’s look at some real-world approaches.Data filteringThe foundation of every AI model is its training dataset, so fine-tuning it to understand human intent starts here. Using more curated datasets like peer-reviewed journals, expert discussions, in-depth articles, and literature, not generic datasets, helps AI models understand context better. These curated datasets contain rich, high-integrity information that helps AI models recognize structured, context-based analysis and sound reasoning instead of just grabbing unverified claims from anywhere. Human expert discussions feature a lot of nuance, which is important for AI models to recognize.Curated datasets are costlier than generic datasets, but the payoff is better accuracy and reliability. The entire dataset doesn’t have to be curated, but introducing a significant volume of curated datasets helps LLMs understand context much better. To maintain the integrity of curated datasets, even as AI models generate output that may misinterpret context, developers can implement cryptographic or statistical watermarks (e.g., Google's SynthID) into their AI outputs. This watermark lets models recognize their own output and avoid training based on it, preventing a “model collapse” where LLMs degrade in quality after being trained on their own generated data. Another approach is to build training dataset pipelines that only include data before 2023, the year when LLMs went mainstream, and the web began getting flooded with AI-generated content. Tackling semantic erosion in AI models starts with filtering their foundational training datasets, and we’ve described some effective approaches.Architectural solutionsDevelopers can counter semantic erosion with strategic AI model architecture design. For example, AI models can be prohibited from guessing what data fields mean and, instead, use a localized semantic platform (e.g., SqIDBM) to map data queries to structured metrics, not raw database tables from which the model can extract wrong data if left alone. Instead of letting AI models look directly at database tables, developers place a semantic platform in the middle that acts like a translator, telling the AI model what to output instead of leaving the model to search through the tables and possibly extract wrong insights.Developers can also implement autonomous drift detection and session-level observability, where independent systems check if an AI agent’s output begins diverting from its preset semantic baselines, or when output starts drifting out of context. Instead of just monitoring isolated API calls, this approach involves tracking an AI agent's responses across a whole conversation and multiple workflows. If context drift is detected, automated corrections can be triggered, such as assigning the task to another model, automatically injecting updated, more context-aware prompts, and halting repetitive loops to save token costs.Developers can also introduce loss functions that penalize AI agents for being too uniform, forcing them to keep some statistical entropy (diversity) in their outputs. Without this penalty, AI models can hyper-optimize to the point of finding one successful answer to a query, then repeating it endlessly for similar queries even when context differs. The entropy penalty compels the AI agent to distribute probabilities across multiple options instead of placing 100% confidence in a single response.Think of the loss function as a mathematical rulebook that tells the AI model when it goes wrong, and the model only gets penalized for mistakes. This makes the AI model avoid wanting to give wrong answers, so it uses diverse vocabulary, alters sentence structures, and follows "creative" approaches to respond to user queries instead of following the safest, most generic path (e.g., "I understand that...").Moving from 1 to 5 agents introduces a high level of coordination complexity. Think of the possible state errors, race conditions, and failure points for an AI model and multiply that by the number of models raised to the power of 2. That’s what developers face. For example, moving to 3 agents increases complexity by 9, and moving to 5 agents increases it by 25. Research indicates that 36.9% of multi-agent system failures are due to coordination misalignment. Agents sharing the same memory may read outdated data from cached layers. Unlike standalone AI models with strict API limits, multi-agent systems can loop infinitely and misinterpret context. Inter-agent handoffs and context repetition lead to these systems consuming many more tokens than standalone counterparts. To work around this problem, developers use a central coordinator to break down user queries into various parts, assign parts dynamically or sequentially to different agents, and aggregate results. Yet, earlier on, we described the limitations of this centralized orchestration approach.Algorithmic solutionsDevelopers can follow algorithmic approaches that prevent semantic erosion in AI models. This involves injecting mathematical rigor into the models to enforce semantic consistency, restrict probability distributions, and limit the occurrence of hallucinations. One approach is to supplement pure vector-distance searches with precise knowledge-graph paths in AI agents. This helps AI agents move from simply looking for semantic similarity to structured reasoning based on relational facts. Knowledge-graph paths connect entities (like places, people, and objects) with directional edges, allowing agents to follow preset multi-hop paths, such as Author > Book > Chapter > Quote, to retrieve facts.(Image credit: LeewayHertz)Vector-distance searches aren’t discarded entirely, as they're essential for routine, narrative-style answers. Rather, use the hybrid model where vector-distance handles routine user queries, and knowledge-graph paths handle more complex queries. For their AI model, developers also combine statistical machine learning (data-driven prediction) with hard-coded algebraic constraints (mathematical bounds) that can’t be bypassed. For example, an AI model simulating chemical reactions will use statistical machine learning to simulate the reactions, and an algebraic layer that binds it to the law of Conservation of Mass and Energy, which states that the total sum of mass and energy in an isolated system stays constant and can't be created or destroyed. In mathematical terms, it’s E = mc2, where E is total energy, m is mass, and c is the speed of light in a vacuum (3 x 108 m/s). The above algebraic constraint ensures that when the AI model simulates chemical reactions, it doesn’t violate the laws of physics by creating or destroying chemical energy. Semantic erosion won’t let the AI model generate physically impossible outcomes with more or less energy than the original reactants in a chemical process.During training, developers also restrict an AI model’s reward function to compiled results, or deterministic tokens, known as the Outcome-based reward mechanism. It emphasizes results and correctness over format compliance, where the model must pass a unit test, not just sound convincing while possibly being very wrong. AI models are good at “reward hacking,” where they can generate coherent but very incorrect text, and this is behind the hallucinations that users often see. Restricting a model’s reward function to deterministic tokens prevents hallucinations and semantic erosion, helping the model provide accurate answers to complex questions. Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) approachesAI models may work independently after training, but inserting a human in the loop remains beneficial. A human-in-the-loop (HITL) approach infuses human judgment directly into AI data pipelines to prevent semantic erosion. (Image credit: Future)While labeling training data, domain experts can step in to re-anchor drifting tokens to real-world definitions instead of allowing recursive AI-to-AI outputs that can get easily misinterpreted. It’s no surprise that platforms like Mercor have built major businesses out of hiring domain experts (like software engineers, lawyers, doctors, and investment bankers) to label data for AI labs. Mercor alone has tens of thousands of hired talent fine-tuning data for numerous AI model developers, including Anthropic (Claude) and OpenAI (ChatGPT), the two biggest ones.Developers also infuse frequent human-validated feedback to prevent semantic erosion loops where AI models train on AI-generated data and gradually lose touch with real human data. If left alone without human feedback, small biases, hallucinations, and errors can become foundational data for training the next AI events, and edge cases disappear, making the AI model forget its underlying data. However, developers regularly inject more context-heavy data to prevent this from happening. There’s also the Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) approach, a training method where human experts rate an AI model's outputs for alignment with stated values and preferences. The model learns from this process to give outputs that align with human intent, not just relying on hard-coded rules. Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) occurs in the post-training stage, after the model has gone through pre-training to build foundational knowledge, followed by the supervised fine-tuning (SFT) stage that teaches the model to format answers properly and act like an assistant. Then, RLHF comes in to align the base model with human values. There’s no silver bullet strategy for addressing semantic erosion in AI models. Rather, developers combine various methods, which we’ve described in detail. The broad AI training process never truly ends, even when most work is done in the initial stage, so semantic erosion will always be a lingering issue that has to be addressed. Fortunately, developers have proven strategies to address it and keep models as accurate as possible.

While we don't know exactly what went down, Binance co-CEO Richard Teng confirmed the attack via a LinkedIn post. He also added that “the attacker did not simply use one engineer's permissions, and this was not a single 'one-click' action. It involved a more complex attack process". TRM Labs also said the attackers pulled funds from 10 different chains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Tron, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Avalanche, and Polygon. That said, the attack did not target user funds, as Teng confirmed, sharing that “Binance will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and company funds". Apple admitted a ‘small’ number of iPhone Duos have a screen issue The Garmin Enduro 4 (Image credit: Lance Ulanoff/ Future)The launch of the iPhone Duo prompted worldwide excitement for Apple's first foldable phone, but a small number of users on Reddit have reported issues with the device's hinge cracking and causing the screen to break. It's unclear whether these issues are a common occurrence across all iPhone duo devices or whether they're simply isolated incidents, but looking at the reports on social media we've assumed it's the latter. Foldable phones are innately more delicate than standard smartphones, and with many first-time users opting for the iPhone Duo, some may not be equipped with the knowledge of how to treat them. Following the report, Apple shared a statement with us, saying "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement". Now audio manufacturers are obsessed with open, including electronics giant Samsung, which finally introduced its own pair of clip-on, open earbuds: Galaxy Buds On. They wrap around from the back of your ears to the ear hole and project sound. The coolest thing about Samsung’s pair is how they offer some external noise cancellation, so people next to you don’t have to listen to your music.Read more: 'We analyzed 119 million ear data points' — how Samsung built Galaxy Buds On, its first open-type earbuds3. The iMac and MacBook Pro got M6 upgradesThe Sonos Beam Ultra (Image credit: Apple)It's been an eventful few weeks at Apple, especially following the iPhone Duo launch, but the company's latest Mac and iPad upgrades are the icing on the cake, starting with M6 upgrades for the iMac and MacBook Pro. The iMac's pricing starts at $1,499, the same as its predecessor, while the MacBook Pro M6 also starts at the same level as its M5 predecessor, which is $1,999 / £1,999 / AU$3,199. Marking the company's first 2nm chip, Apple says it will give new iMacs a notable boost for local AI processing, running 5x faster for on-device AI tasks than the previous-gen all-in-one with the M4 chip. As for the new M6 MacBook, Apple promises 30% faster graphics performance thanks to its 12-core GPU, as well as a 25% performance boost for on-device AI processing versus the M5. At the same time, Apple unveiled its new OLED iPad mini starting at $699 / £699 / AU$1,099. Central to the refresh is the larger 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR screen, promising a more immersive view with enhanced visuals, as well as a brightness boost, now topping out at 1,200 nits, which is a considerable leap over the previous mini's 500 nits. The past four weeks have been, frankly, a wild time for our product testers. Each month I put together a Reviews Recap of the gadgets that have impressed us most; the products that have endured our tough tests and come out with a score of 4.5 or 5 out of 5. And this month there's a bumper crop, with dozens of great gadgets and gizmos to explore, across a variety of different product categories. It won't surprise you to see Apple amongst the standouts of the past month: the Duo won us over with its "exquisite engineering" and "vibrant, virtually crease-free screen", but it was the Apple Watch Series 12 that earned perfect marks, with our tester dubbing it "the best mainline [Apple Watch] in years". We also reviewed several excellent laptops, some sublime speakers, and many a magnificent TV. If you're not sure we're branching out enough, we also gave the stamp of approval to an innovative, podless pod coffee machine and a microwave that moonlights as an air fryer. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman would rather have RAM put into data centersAltman says it's 'quite terrible' that RAM is sitting in individual PCsThe comments haven't gone down well with consumers onlineThe increasing demands from data centers powering AI engines has plunged us into a global RAM shortage crisis, and the CEO of one of the companies responsible thinks the memory that is available should be in data centers rather than individual PCs.Offering up an opinion that's unlikely to add to his popularity among the general public, OpenAI boss Sam Altman told the Cheeky Pint podcast (via IGN) that "from a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."Individual PCs rarely make full use of their RAM, was Altman's larger point, whereas data centers often do. "You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply constrained environment," the OpenAI CEO continued. "And somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that."The PC owners Altman was referring to have had to deal with rising prices, job insecurity, and data center pollution thanks to the rise of AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT, so the opinion he's shared is unlikely to be supported by the masses. Not a popular opinionOpenAI CEO Sam Altman Thinks It's 'Terrible' for You to Have RAM in Your Gaming PC from r/technologyAs you would expect, consumers aren't particularly pleased with what Altman has had to say. A Reddit thread discussing the comments is packed with pushback against AI, data centers, and the RAM shortage."It's only 64GB but he can pry it from my cold, dead hands," writes one commenter in the thread, while another is of the opinion that "[tech company executives] will destroy the planet by continuing with this mentality and then they'll promptly blame everyone else for the downfall".The out-of-touch mentality of AI company bosses gets several mentions — as do their ethics, with bots like ChatGPT having built up their training data on vast amounts of information, often copyrighted, without paying for it. It's fair to say Altman's comments haven't gone down well. Most analysts expect RAM to be in short supply for years to come, which is going to mean prices for consumer gadgetry continue to rise, and anyone thinking about building their own PC will have to pay top dollar for its components.

Man City vs Brighton: Saturday, Oct 31 at 3pm GMT / 11am ET / 2am AEDT (Sun)Streams: Peacock (US) / Stan Sport (AUS)Unlock your stream with Proton VPN (up to 75% off)Saturday's Man City vs Brighton live streams see first play third in the Premier League 2026/27, with both sides seeking a return to winning ways after respective league losses last weekend. Unusually for such a big game, it's a 3pm GMT kick-off in the UK on Saturday afternoon.Despite all of the controversy and those 114 charges off the field, City have been quite brilliant on it. Until last weekend, they'd won all seven of their league games with Erling Haaland looking as sharp in front of goal as his natty new haircut. That run came to an abrupt end at Villa Park, however, with Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson scoring twice in the Villans' 2-1 win. With Antoine Semenyo out long-term, much seems to rest on the shoulders of the big Norwegian, while Gianluigi Donnarumma's form between the sticks has been called into question of late. And now they face a side that they've failed to beat at the last four times of asking in the EPL and, it doesn't feel too optimistic to suggest, are in the hunt for a Champions League spot of their own next season. A 3-0 walloping of champions Arsenal last month proved that Fabian Hürzeler's men have what it takes to beat the very best and, with 23 goals in eight outings, they're the top scorers in the division. They were well beaten last time out at Anfield (with Pascal Gross scoring at the wrong end, for a change), so Seagulls fans will hope Charalampos Kostoulas has packed his scoring boots for the trip north on Saturday. Google has unveiled an AI model that can create entire interactive worlds, complete with realistic environments that respond to what people do inside them. Genie 4 is an extraordinary piece of technology, capable of generating experiences that would have seemed almost impossible just a few years ago. Unfortunately, Google seems incapable of announcing an impressive AI achievement without dragging artificial general intelligence (AGI) into the conversation."The ability to explore an unlimited range of realistic environments is a key stepping stone on the path to AGI," the company declared in its rollout. "Training and testing AI agents in truer-to-life environments brings us closer to their successful deployment in the physical world." Despite the science behind that claim, I'm skeptical — or perhaps cynical. Though I pay closer attention than the average person, I've lost count of how many times I've heard that the latest AI demonstration, no matter how impressive or lackluster, is a sign that AGI is right around the corner. Genie 4 produces more realistic scenes than Genie 3 and includes audio, even dialogue that responds to what happens inside the simulation. Users can even steer the experience through conversational instructions, changing the environment while the generated world continues around them. The possibilities for creative experimentation and AI research are intriguing. But the distance between generating a convincing virtual environment and developing genuine general intelligence remains enormous. Pretty but nothing long-termGenie 4 offers striking, vivid environments. You can imagine walking through a city, changing the weather, and interacting with simulated inhabitants. That's not nothing, and it's a huge leap from even a few years ago. But it would be foolish to confuse realism with the understanding implied by AGI. A model can produce a visually convincing simulation of a ball rolling down a hill without knowing any physics. Faking plausibility is easier than grasping the underlying rules that govern how things behave in reality, especially when a user does something unexpected. And Genie 4 can maintain its coherent environments for only a few minutes, with visual details drifting over time and objects abruptly changing or vanishing. That's a fine limitation to work with, but it doesn't scream universal intelligence that understands the real world. If a simulated environment struggles to remember what happened a couple of minutes earlier, trusting it to model the consequences of complicated real-world decisions seems premature at best. The scenery might look real for a minute, but the underlying reality remains fragile.None of that makes Genie 4 a failure or its capabilities uninteresting. But the AGI framing encourages you to read much more into its abilities than the evidence supports. AGI as marketingGoogle has a serious reason to pursue world models like Genie 4. It could help teach AI agents and robots how actions affect their surroundings, and simulations could provide training opportunities that would be expensive or dangerous to recreate physically. A simulated world is only useful for training when its behavior corresponds closely enough to reality. If an AI learns from inaccurate physics or unpredictable interactions, it risks becoming very good at solving problems that don't exist outside the simulation. Genie 4 could assist in reducing that problem. But demonstrating a promising research approach is far from showing that the approach will produce AGI. Not that anyone would agree on whether AGI had been achieved even if it did happen. There's no official definition for the concept. Companies can describe progress toward AGI without explaining exactly how much progress they've made or what evidence would prove they've arrived. The phrase has become a wonderfully flexible destination, always close enough to sound exciting and distant enough to avoid being measured.I suspect Genie 4's most immediate value will have little to do with creating a machine that thinks like a person. Its ability to rapidly produce interactive prototypes could be useful for game developers, while researchers could use controlled simulations to explore particular problems. Those are worthwhile achievements that deserve attention without being wrapped in promises about the future of intelligence. What frustrates me is how speculation around AGI reduces the new model's milestones to a slogan. It turns an interesting scientific development into another installment of an increasingly familiar marketing campaign. For now, Genie 4 shows that Google is getting much better at creating worlds that look real. That's an achievement worth celebrating on its own terms. We should resist the temptation to confuse the ability to generate a convincing imitation of reality with the intelligence required to understand it. And try not to count any more AGI chickens before their models hatch.

If I was to pinpoint one special lens in my photography career, it would have to be the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Nikon F-mount. I picked mine up just before I moved to East Africa where I would work in photo journalism. Sigma had just burst onto the scene with its new ‘Art’ lens in 2012, for a much lower price than Nikon’s proprietary 35mm f/1.4 for its DSLRs, and so I bought one to pair with my Nikon D800 camera. Over four memorable years living in Kenya and travelling the region and neighbouring countries, I estimate that I took more than 75% of my photos with this one lens, many my all-time favorites of people in their environment.More recently, I switched to a mirrorless camera made by the same company — the Z-mount Nikon Z6 II, which has been updated with the Z6 III but remains my primary camera. Viltrox then offered a review sample of its shiny new AF 35mm F1.4 Pro lens, which was unveiled this week in Nikon Z-mount and Sony E-mount versions, but with no word on an L-mount version yet. I’ve already tested Viltrox’s pricier 35mm F1.2 from its flagship ‘Lab’ series, but the latest f/1.4 pro is a specs match to my old lens, so I was keen to see how the two compared. I tried both lenses in various scenarios, shooting like-for-like photos with them using the Z6 II camera (the Sigma lens attached via the Nikon F-mount to Z-mount adapter).Along the way I was asking myself — is mirrorless all that it’s cracked up to be, or could I happily continue with my decade-old-and-more DSLR optic? Here’s what I learned. The adapter (left), Sigma lens (middle) and Viltrox lens (right)Tim ColemanHere the Sigma lens is now attached to the F-mount to Z-mount adapterTim ColemanAnd here I've attached the Viltrox lens to the cameraTim ColemanTim ColemanHandling of each lensI'll start with handling, and Sigma’s lens by itself is physically smaller than Viltrox’s. However, the necessary F-mount to Z-mount adapter to use it with my Z6 II adds bulk and evens matters out. And if I were to use the Sigma lens with my D800 DSLR, well, that's a much bigger camera than the Z6 II. The adapter essentially addresses flange depth (the distance between the camera sensor and the rear of the lens — which is deeper in Nikon's F-mount), while maintaining full autofocus performance. As such, there was no real size or weight advantage to either lens, whatever camera system was used. Nikon also has an affordable 35mm f/1.4 Z-mount lens, mind you, which is smaller than both of these lenses, but in my experience it doesn't match the quality of either lens here. My Sigma lens has taken a beating over its almost 15 years of use in harsh conditions, and it's still going strong. Sure, it looks well-used, but it performs like it did on day one. I wouldn't hold the same hope for the Viltrox lens, aesthetically speaking, at least. It's one of the many Viltrox lenses that I've tested with an exterior that scratches easily. That doesn't affect optical quality, but it did make me mindful of taking care of the lens.Autofocus is a fraction snappier and smoother with the Viltrox lens, but not enough of a reason alone to opt for it. I don't believe that using an F-mount lens through the adapter with a Z-mount mirrorless camera has any adverse affect on autofocus performance. The focus distance in this scene, shot at f/1.4, is fairly closeTim ColemanThe Viltrox 35mm lens photo: detail is slightly sharper, with more contrastTim ColemanThe Sigma shot: detail is slightly softer, and there are signs of LoCA in the text falling into out-of-focus on the wine bottle Tim ColemanAnother scene shot at f/1.4, helping the tram to stand out from its surroundings, though a closed aperture would work well tooTim ColemanThe Viltrox image - see the sharper textTim ColemanThe Sigma image - again a little softerTim ColemanIn that same tram scene, note the chromatic aberration in the out of focus power lines. There's better contrast in the Viltrox shotTim ColemanAnd the same scene but with the Sigma lensTim ColemanOptical quality: any obvious progress?I regularly want to make use of the bright maximum f/1.4 aperture with a lens such as these, in order to decrease depth of field and blur surroundings so that my subjects standout, and for working in dim light with no supplementary lighting. It’s at this setting in particular that the differences in optical quality between the two lenses are acute. The Viltrox lens is optically sharper at f/1.4. Not by much, I must say, and you won't necessarily see the difference even when viewed on a laptop — I'd still class the Sigma lens as very sharp. However, when pixel peeping, the difference is there. And it's when pixel peeping that chromatic aberration (CA) in the Sigma is way more pronounced. The Viltrox lens isn't immune to it, but it handles the distortion much better. The Sigma lens shows longitudinal chromatic aberration (LoCA) at times, too — a lens distortion that is harder to correct. I expected vignetting (where corners are darker) to be worse in the Sigma lens, but in reality performance was roughly on par.Another f/1.4 photo in a good test for bokehTim ColemanThe Viltrox image — detail in the beanie is slightly sharper, bokeh smoothTim ColemanAnd the Sigma shot — only when you look really close do you see a difference in sharpness, while bokeh is equally creamyTim ColemanAn environmental portrait, at f/1.4, with the Viltrox lensTim ColemanI wanted to include the whole scene with the Sigma lens too, so you get an idea of how alike the photos are when viewed normallyTim ColemanCheck out my round-up of the best Nikon Z-mount lensesAnd what about bokeh (the out-of-focus quality, typically observed in dappled light)? From my sample images, I'd have to say it's a tie. Both lenses can render buttery smooth bokeh, with similar characteristics; roundish in the center of the frame, becoming slightly more cats-eye in shape towards the corners. The optical quality observations above are made with the lens aperture wide open at f/1.4. In all the situations above, I took sequences at f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2, f/2.8, f/4 and f/5.6 and compared the differences. Stop aperture down to, say, f/4 and f/5.6, and most of the above differences are negligible; sharpness evens out, and lens distortions reduce — only does chromatic aberration remain more pronounced in the Sigma. I've included closeups of images shot at f/5.6 which prove how the quality evens out, below. Viltrox at f/5.6Tim ColemanSigma at f/5.6Tim ColemanViltrox at f/5.6Tim ColemanSigma at f/5.6Tim Coleman(Image credit: Tim Coleman)Viltrox AF 35mm F1.4 Pro vs Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art: the bottom lineFor photographers, there is surprisingly little to choose between what is an excellent Viltrox AF 35mm F1.4 Pro lens and the 15-year-old Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art. Optical quality differences are more acute at f/1.4; with aperture at its maximum setting, the Viltrox lens is slightly sharper and handles chromatic aberration better. However, you'll only really spot those differences when pixel peeping, and closing down each lens to f/4 and lower, the end results level out.Bokeh is essentially the same in both lenses, although there's a touch of LoCA in the Sigma lens in certain backlit scenarios. The Viltrox AF 35mm F1.4 Pro joins a growing list of lenses from the Chinese company that I can highly recommend. However, comparing it to a 15-year-old Sigma legend, that's designed for a mostly discontinued camera system, has only shown me that DSLRs and their best optics are still a decent option today. I for one will happily continue using my Sigma lens for photography.

If you celebrate Halloween, you'll no doubt be on the lookout for some things to entertain you this weekend. With this in mind, I checked out three of the biggest new horror releases in October to see if they're any good.Scream or SkipScream or Skip, that is the question. With so much horror out there to watch and play, our senior entertainment writer, Lucy Buglass, is here to help you decide what's worth your time (or worthy of a Scream) and what's not (so you might want to Skip). Her goal is to help you spend less time scrolling and more time enjoying some great TV shows, movies, and games. Read the full series here. There have been some real highs and lows this month, and I found myself especially disappointed by one movie in particular. Thankfully, there's a great TV show and game to keep you occupied, so it's not all bad.So, what do I recommend checking out this spooky weekend? Scroll down to find out.TV — Crystal LakeWhere to watch: Peacock (US); Sky (UK); Stan (AU)Lucy's verdict: ScreamCrystal Lake is the anticipated Friday the 13th prequel, and it's a great choice if you want a binge-worthy series to watch over the Halloween weekend. With all eight episodes streaming at once, how could you resist?I did have my reservations about this series, but it is an excellent entry into the horror franchise. In my full Crystal Lake review, I noted there's a clear love for the original movies here, and that it expands upon the lore by focusing on Pamela Voorhees, an under-explored character in the Friday the 13th universe. Played excellently by Linda Cardellini, it's very worth your time.Movie — Other Mommy Where to watch: Theaters worldwideLucy's verdict: SkipAs someone who loved the book Incidents Around the House and was genuinely freaked out by it, I was excited to hear it was getting a movie adaptation. I was even more excited to hear that Jessica Chastain would star in a dual role as a woman and an entity that emulates her, known as "Other Mommy".Unfortunately, the movie ended up being a massive letdown. Not only does it suffer from the cliché of tired and overused jump scares, but it also deviates from the book to the point that it loses the psychological dread and tension that had me looking over my shoulder. Other Mommy does very little to stand out from similar supernatural movies like itGame — Clive Barker's Hellraiser: RevivalWhere to play: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PCLucy's verdict: ScreamHellraiser has been everywhere recently, from its haunted house at Universal's Halloween Horror Nights to a new video game. I was very impressed with Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival and would highly recommend it this Halloween weekend. It's clear it's been made by people who have a genuine appreciation for Hellraiser, as the atmosphere and the willingness to stick to canon are excellent. Iconic character Pinhead returns too, and the result is a gripping game with puzzles and heart-pounding moments.

Elegoo, known for its hobbyist 3D printers, is changing, and its more recent hardware shows big changes in both design and manufacturing quality. The M1 Ultra is one of the signs of this change yet, with a premium design and build that put it firmly in competition with established 3D scanning manufacturers such as Creality. The M1 Ultra combines blue laser and infrared structured-light scanning, with five main scanning configurations that cover everything from small mechanical components and intricate objects to larger structures and even humans. The scanner offers a top accuracy of 0.02mm in the finest blue laser mode, and other standout features include full wireless operation, a 3-inch touchscreen and a swappable battery.I’ve recently tested quite a few handheld 3D scanners, and there’s no doubt the market is getting competitive; however, whilst it’s a surprise to see Elegoo launch into the market, it’s even more surprising when I lifted the scanner from the hard case to discover the quality of the design and build. The M1 Ultra is beautifully finished with a well-balanced design, with part rubberised grip that makes it comfortable to manoeuvre around objects. If anything, I would have liked the grip to be slightly longer, but otherwise the physical design is excellent. The scanner connects through either wired USB or Wireless connection, with a slide switch enabling you to quickly switch between the two. This link connects you to the software, which initially guides you through the scanning process, and for first-generation software it’s all extremely well thought out. The most important factor is scan quality, and while scanning a selection of household ornaments, mechanical components, and structural parts, it produced detailed, dimensionally accurate models that I could then export for direct 3D printing or import and edit within Blender. One of the biggest surprises that I had during the scan process was firstly the speed and then the difference between the initial scanning preview that appeared in the software and the processed model. The preview scans looked OK, if a little rough, but after completing the scan and running the first processing stage, the detail suddenly appeared. The Elegoo Scan software, being an early release, is surprisingly good and avoided any freezes or glitches through the testing. Scan processing typically took a couple of minutes, depending on complexity and the size, while editing and removing unwanted geometry was straightforward, partly due to my ever-increasing familiarity and use of these scanners. The usage and workflow of the software is very similar to other systems.Wireless scanning on a scanner of this price is great to see, and I was quickly able to connect to the scanner over Wi-Fi. Once that connection was made, I found the live preview on the scanner’s touchscreen made moving around larger objects much easier. Through the test, I did find many of the usual limits, such as scanning glossy black plastic and highly reflective surfaces still requiring scanning spray. In all cases, how easily something scans rests solely on careful preparation and marker placement. When using the scanner wirelessly, the scanner also takes over the computer’s Wi-Fi connection, preventing access to a normal workshop wireless network, which I also found was a little inconvenient.Considering that this is Elegoo's first 3D scanner, the speed, quality and ease of use make it feel like a product that has already undergone several iterations. This is a great option for small businesses, makers, enthusiasts, and other 3D professionals looking for a decent 3D scanner at a reasonable price.ELEGOO M1 Ultra: Price and AvailabilityThe Elegoo M1 Ultra has a recommended retail price of $1,699 in the US, £1,399 in the UKand €1,699. The scanner is being sold through the official website here.Elegoo M1 Ultra: Design(Image credit: Alastair Jennings)One of the first things that impressed me about the M1 Ultra was the physical design and quality of the build. In contrast to their range of hobbyist 3D printers, Elegoo has clearly aimed this at a more professional level, and it feels significantly more refined than many of their previous product lines. Elegoo's hardware design improved dramatically, as I saw with its H1 HT filament dryer a few months back and again when it comes to finish and build quality; this feels premium and much like the quality that I’ve come to expect from companies like Bambu Lab.Weighing in at just over half a kilogram, the M1 Ultra is relatively compact compared with several scanners I’ve used recently. The weight is well balanced for the size, and it's comfortable to hold while moving around objects, with the grip featuring a rubberised texture that provides excellent purchase.Grip in the scanner is especially important when scanning smaller mechanical components, where controlled movements can affect tracking and the quality of the capture. If anything, I do feel that the grip could have been slightly longer, but overall it’s comfortable enough to handle. The front of the scanner features the optical system, including the laser emitters, cameras and illumination; these all look like lenses. These are neatly integrated into the casing, while the controls on the large touch screen enable you to start, pause and access the hardware settings. The 3-inch touchscreen is more than just a monitor for settings and enables less reliance, in some situations, on using a computer screen when scanning. An example is when using the scanner wirelessly, and the display provides a live scan preview; you can also use it to adjust the exposure and zoom.Additional hardware settings can also be accessed through the touchscreen, including Wi-Fi hotspot information, display brightness, screen rotation, language, prompt sounds and sound alerts. I also liked the fact that I could access the onboard user guide.(Image credit: Alastair Jennings)Not all aspects of the user interface are as polished as the hardware itself. The start and pause controls, exposure adjustment, and zoom interface use a slightly dated visual style, with gradient effects that feel more like enthusiast equipment than professional; still, the actual functionality is there. As I’ve seen with many of these scanners, it arrives in a hard carrying case which is identical in design to the one that arrived with one of the Creality scanners recently; the only difference is the logo on the front and the equipment inside. Inside, the scanner is neatly laid out, with the scanner, batteries, calibration board, USB cable, tripod, and reflective markers. In contrast to some other scanners, the cables are kept to a minimum, with power and data handled through the same USB connection when using wired.Design: 4/5ELEGOO M1 Ultra: Features(Image credit: Alastair Jennings)Specs(Image credit: Alastair Jennings)Dimensions: 191 × 50 × 76mmWeight: 511g (including battery)Scanning Accuracy: Up to 0.02mm (blue laser)Scanning Modes: Five, including blue laser and infraredScanning Speed: Up to 100fps (USB), 60fps (Wi-Fi)Scanning Resolution: 0.05–2mm (blue laser)Scanning Volume: 5 × 5 × 5mm to 4,000 × 4,000 × 4,000mmDisplay: 3-inch HD touchscreenConnectivity: USB-C 3.1 and Wi-Fi 6Battery: 4,800mAh removableThe M1 Ultra features five scanning modes designed to enable you to scan different materials, object sizes, and most importantly, levels of detail.A quick run-through, and you have the 34-line crossed blue laser, which is designed for fast scanning of medium-to-large objects. The seven-line parallel mode is better suited to smaller parts and more detailed areas. The single-line configuration lets the scanner capture recessed features, deep holes, and narrow gaps.Alongside these are infrared structured light mode, designed for larger objects, faces, and bodies, and the marker-free blue laser option for situations where reflective markers can't be applied, such as when scanning valuable museum artefacts.Within each mode, there are a variety of options that you can configure through the Elegoo Scan software, which offers adjustments to tracking, field of view, capture resolution, as well as the main scan quality settings. This does take some time to get your head around, and depending on the mode, you can select marker-assisted or marker-free tracking, standard or wide-angle fields of view, global marker workflows and different laser patterns. This sounds complex, but Elegoo have created guides for each type and practice is definitely needed in order to fully understand what type and size of object needs what type of scan and settings. The software does go some way to make things easy, with an example being the infrared scanning mode that offers dedicated presets for normal objects, faces, and bodies, plus geometry-based and texture-based tracking options.Although the number of settings is considerable, the software is generally well organised. If you are new to 3D scanning, there’s also plenty of guides and visual prompts in the software to explain how the different options work.Features: 4.5/5ELEGOO M1 Ultra: Performance(Image credit: Alastair Jennings)Getting started, the first step is the hardware setup. After installing Elegoo Scan on my MacBook Pro, connecting the scanner through USB and selecting the connection option, it was almost ready to go aside from a quick initial firmware update. Before the scanning process could begin, I needed to run through the calibration process, and this was all surprisingly easy with the calibration chart sitting on the table and the software directing me through a series of manoeuvres with the on-screen guide. This style of calibration used to take me ages; however, here I found the process pretty quick and straightforward. I started the test using the wired connection, but to switch to wireless there’s a small switch on top of the scanner that enables the change from USB to WLAN. As the switch is moved, the system restarts, and then you can select the scanner’s hotspot from the computer’s Wi-Fi connections, enter the on-screen password, and again it’s ready to go.The process is easy enough, though wireless operation means the scanner creates its own Wi-Fi hotspot, which the computer must connect directly to. That meant disconnecting from the workshop Wi-Fi, and there was no option to keep both connections active at once. This isn’t an issue during scanning, especially since the software works offline, but it becomes a bit annoying when switching between scanning and anything that I needed to do online. When everything was set and ready, I was able to start the scanning process, starting with the 34-line cross blue laser options, which proved to scan objects at speed. Once a scan was captured, it was then possible to clean up the point cloud, as well as easily align multiple scans, and move through mesh wrapping and optimisation before exporting the finished model. The M1 Ultra and the software effectively give you an easy scan-to-model process, and when finished, you just click export. For testing, I scanned a variety of objects, ranging from household and office ornaments to mechanical components and structural parts that I needed to reproduce or work around when creating brackets and replacement pieces. These included objects made from tarnished metal, matte ceramic, plastic, and wood, and the scanner performed exceptionally well across these materials. As with other 3D scanners I’ve tested, good results come down to preparation. While marker-free scanning sounds appealing, I have found that reflective markers remain the most reliable approach. My usual setup includes a rotating platform, custom 3D-printed marker blocks positioned around the object, and adhesive reflective markers attached directly to the object wherever practical. I also use acrylic blocks to raise the object above the surface. This helps separate the subject from the surrounding environment, especially the platform it sits on, and makes the captured data easier to cut out and process. The whole preparation process generally takes around five minutes, but it makes an enormous difference to the ease and reliability of scanning. Through the setup process, I aim to keep at least five reflective markers visible to the scanner at any one time, and this generally meant that tracking was straightforward. Scanning objects without markers proved less reliable, even with the scanner’s marker-free configuration.Once I had properly prepared the subject, most objects took around five to ten minutes to scan from each orientation. Where possible, I tried to capture the object in just two orientations, as this made alignment quicker and generally produced better results. The scanning process itself was fast, and it was good to see the preview build up the model. When scanning, I started off with the crossed blue laser pattern as this tended to provide the best overall coverage, and then switched to the seven-line mode when scanning more complex objects. For recessed features and deeper holes, switching to the single-line laser again helped to fill in some of the gaps. After scanning, each model is previewed on the screen, and then you can go through the various processing modes. One point to make here is that the initial scanning is surprisingly fast and the initial point-cloud preview can look a little rough, giving little indication of the level of detail that has actually been captured. However, after you finish the scan and move through the first refinement stage, the model's detail suddenly snaps into place, and it’s impressive. The M1 Ultra reproduced fine surface features and dimensional accuracy extremely well. One example of the accuracy came when I scanned the car's EV charger, with the model generated being imported into CAD software as a template for a wall-mounted holder. The finished product, while needing some refinement, fitted the EV charger perfectly. The software is able to export OBJ files that can then be used in applications such as Blender for further editing. The range of available export formats also makes it relatively straightforward to move finished models into other design and manufacturing workflows, with 3MF and STL alongside OBJ.Not every object's surface was easy to capture, and as ever, while tarnished metal, wood, ceramic and plastic surfaces generally scanned very well, glossy black plastic gained mixed results.Essentially, any surface that reflects or absorbs the scanning light causes a bit of an issue, and you can get matte scanning sprays to help with the scanning of this type of object.Infrared scanning also produced ok results, and making sure you work in a well-lit, soft-light environment definitely helps. Again, as with any scanning mode, practice and skill often play a large part in the scanning success.(Image credit: Alastair Jennings)One of the main skills when scanning is alignment, essentially when you take a couple of scans of an object from different angles and then align them into one. The alignment option worked well and was surprisingly fast to process between scans, provided the reflective markers' position was maintained. This works by completing the first scan; then the object could be repositioned to capture another side without moving any of the base markers, and the resulting scans could then be selected and aligned within Elegoo Scan. The important point here is that the markers used as reference points must remain in the correct positions. If you move markers on the platform between scans, alignment will be much harder, and in most cases it's easier to start again.Mesh processing generally took a couple of minutes per scan, though the time varied considerably with the model's size and complexity. There is still a need to remove unwanted surfaces and sections of the surrounding environment manually, but the software proved effective. Throughout testing, Elegoo Scan remained solid, with no crashes, freezes, or other problems that I have come across in the past with scan software. For a first-generation Elegoo scanner, and with software at such an early stage of development, this level of reliability is excellent. At the start of the test, I stuck to a wired connection, mainly due to having to check guides, etc., but over the weeks of the test I switched to the wireless option. There are some sacrifices that you make as you switch over to the wireless connection, most notably that the scanner has a lower quoted maximum frame rate; however, I didn’t notice much of a difference. The real improvement going wireless was the ergonomic feel of scanning alongside the obvious effect of no longer having trailing wires. The main benefit is that instead of looking back at the laptop monitor to check scan progress, the wireless connection let me monitor the preview directly on the handheld scanner’s touchscreen. This made scanning far more natural, especially when moving around larger or awkwardly positioned objects.Through the test, I found that the battery runtime was about 60 minutes, shorter than Elegoo's advertised maximum of 90 minutes, but still enough for several typical scans, and I also discovered I could hot-swap the battery with the second battery that was included. I experimented with swapping the battery while USB power was connected, which appeared to work, though this wasn't officially covered in the material I had.Performance: 4 / 5ELEGOO M1 Ultra: Final verdict(Image credit: Alastair Jennings)The Elegoo M1 Ultra shows the direction that the company is moving, and this is an impressive start for them in the 3D scanning market. The arrival in the hard case, with the premium build and design, is far removed from their hobbyist machines, and it all has a decidedly higher-quality feel. The overall ergonomics and build are excellent, and this quality of design comes across in use, with it being easy to handle and with the ability to switch between wired and wireless scanning. As ever, there are the usual issues with the time taken to prepare the scan, but this is part of the course for all 3D scanners and the more time you put in, the better the scan you get. However, the speed of the scans that the M1 enables is impressive, and more importantly, the quality of those scans was exceptionally detailed. The Elegoo Scan software is also well thought out, although I do feel there needs to be a little more thought on the design of both the scanning software and the touchscreen interface. The old Elegoo is still apparent in both, giving that hobbyist rather than slick professional aesthetic. Wireless scanning is another point, and while this works exceptionally well, it does lock your computer out of the normal Wi-Fi network. There are then the usual points about scanning highly reflective or glossy surfaces, which will require scanning spray. While good results can be achieved with what's in the box, I would, as always, highly recommend the following: turntable, reflective markers, marker blocks, acrylic supports, and scanning spray; these are all relatively inexpensive but will save you hours. Should you buy the Elegoo M1 Ultra?Value:Exceptional first-generation scanner at a very reasonable price considering the alternatives.4.5Design: Premium build and ergonomics highlight Elegoos investment in design.4Features:Packed with scanning modes and plenty of options to refine your scanning4.5Performance: Fast and very capable with one of the easiest workflows yet4Total:Excellent scanner for everyone from enthusiasts to professionals.4.5Buy it if...You need detailed scans. If you regularly design replacement components, custom brackets, or work with existing physical objects, the M1 Ultra delivers excellent scan quality that you can update in CAD.You want wireless flexibility. The integrated touchscreen, direct Wi-Fi connection, and removable batteries make the M1 Ultra much easier to manoeuvre around objects than scanners that rely on wired connections. The RAM crisis has grown even more limbs during the month of October. If the memory shortage was incarnated in physical form, it'd have more legs than a spider at this point, and be a multi-limbed monstrosity with a bite that's getting nastier by the day as more negative news seems to roll in at a frightening pace.Just this week, we've witnessed SK Hynix predicting that RAM supply woes are going nowhere and will persist through to 2030, after Dell's CEO recently warned that we're stuck with this crisis until the end of the decade, and Intel's chief exec agreed – on top of other similar forecasts from earlier this month. The latest nugget of doom is from Samsung, with the memory chip maker giving out similar vibes to its rival SK Hynix when reporting its financial results (as Wccftech spotted), informing us that RAM shortages will get worse next year, and supply will remain thin on the ground in 2028, too.You can barely catch a breath between the various dire predictions during the past month. Naturally, in the face of such grimness, it's human nature to try to look on the bright side, or in this case, at least attempt to find a glimmer of light shining through from somewhere. There must be something, right?Well, there is: Black Friday. An event with a distinctly gloomy name, ironically, but I'm increasingly of the opinion that this is going to be a very important sales season from the computing and PC point of view (and likely other tech, too). Mainly because I expect that the deals you'll get this year will likely be the best prices to be had in a long while, and possibly this entire decade, if those 'it's here until 2030' voices are correct in their assertions about the RAM crisis. But I hear you (possibly) cry: given all these price hikes, isn't Black Friday going to be a wash anyway? At least based on what we saw with Amazon's recent Prime Day sales? And yes, that's a fair point. You should manage your expectations with the discounts that'll be on offer, certainly, and don't expect to snag a bargain on RAM sticks or that beefy SSD you've been dreaming about. That just isn't happening (to no one's surprise). However, on Prime Day, there were some decent deals to be had, for example on GPUs. Notably on the RTX 5080, where if you grabbed the deal I highlighted back then, you saved yourself 20% (£300) compared to the price of the cheapest model of that Nvidia GPU on Amazon now (at the time of writing). So, given that, what should you be looking at buying this Black Friday, which is less than a month away now (with early offers starting already)? Well, the best deals will likely be in the products set to be more affected by the memory shortage as time rolls on, and I'm going to highlight what I believe are a few key areas bargain hunters should focus on when it comes to the PC sphere.Graphics cards(Image credit: Future / John Loeffler)I'm putting this one front and center because I believe this should be a priority for PC owners who are looking at a GPU upgrade at some point in the not-too-distant-future. As I already mentioned, there were some decent graphics card deals on Prime Day earlier this month – albeit when it comes to the higher-end GPUs, the word 'decent' translates to 'not inflated', which isn't quite the same thing.Still, the problem is that prices are likely to rise a good deal more next year, and if you do need a higher-end GPU in particular, during 2027 I think there's a good chance pricing will get a lot worse. Meaning that what you'll pay on Black Friday, with the odd scattered deal on the likes of an Nvidia RTX 5070 model or AMD RX 9070 XT – and maybe even an RTX 5080 – will be a relative bargain (maybe for quite some time to come).I think this is especially true given the rumors around the RTX 5090 being discontinued (Nvidia has insisted it isn't, but even so, something's clearly amiss with the flagship GPU somewhere), and the ridiculous inflation the RTX 5080 has seen over the past month. All of this indicates a rocky picture with Nvidia's GPUs, and with memory (VRAM) difficulties set to worsen next year – and AMD also rumored to be implementing price hikes with Radeon graphics cards – my advice is to get in ahead of wider GPU price spikes next year. The catch is that Black Friday deals on graphics cards could be thin on the ground, but we may actually get some decent price cuts in the mid-to-lower-end of GPU territory.Gaming laptops(Image credit: Canva)If you're thinking about buying a gaming laptop, I think there's scope for some good deals on Black Friday – traditionally laptop discounts are plentiful among the massed ranks of portables, and gaming devices have more headroom for cuts, too. What you need to consider here is that serious gaming laptops run with a discrete GPU, and as noted above, graphics card price increases are very much on the table. Indeed, this is already happening, and XMG is pushing up prices for its top-end gaming laptops with the RTX 5090 in a major way, while promising that "other laptop GPUs are also facing supply constraints." Further price rises are coming, then, and with RAM getting more costly next year too, we can expect some painful hikes. As a result, I'd be inclined to keep a careful watch on what Black Friday presents in the way of gaming laptop price cuts, and move sooner rather than later if at all possible.Laptops(Image credit: Shutterstock)Outside of the gaming arena, everyday laptops are another area where I'd seriously think about trying to nab a Black Friday bargain. As mentioned, there are usually a lot of laptop deals – we highlight the top offers at TechRadar, of course, and notebooks represent quite a number of the bargains we pick out – and while there may not be so many this year, expect them to be there. With the rising tide of RAM prices and the worsening of the crisis next year, it seems inevitable that this will jack up the asking prices of all laptops (and especially gaming laptops, as noted, due to the extra pressure added by the video RAM of discrete GPUs).Analyst firms are already predicting that laptop manufacturers are soon going to ramp up pricing as they run short of stockpiled components (purchased at a cheaper cost). And one analyst outfit, IDC, recently advised that the only positive glimmer here is that some retailers are carrying too much notebook stock (given flagging PC sales this year) which may result in "promotions and some short-term relief for consumers," which is clearly referring to Black Friday.I agree, of course, and think that if you want a new laptop in the next couple of years, Black Friday 2026 is likely to be the best time to make your move. What else?(Image credit: Shutterstock)On the PC side, then, I feel that laptops – particularly gaming notebooks – and desktop GPUs are the key areas to focus on for Black Friday bargains. The trouble with other key desktop PC components aside from graphics cards is that pricing has got so high with RAM and SSDs that even a 'bargain' with a big price cut feels like a very sour purchase compared to prices last year. These components are just depressingly expensive (especially system memory), so it's difficult to recommend buying at all unless you're absolutely forced to. (Top-end GPUs are now in this territory too, of course). That said, there may just be a half-decent deal on storage somewhere (we did see one or two of those in the most recent Prime Day).On a lighter note, you might well see some solid deals on CPUs if you're on the hunt for a new processor. This is likely to be the exception in terms of the other core PC components aside from GPUs, although I'm not expecting CPU prices to face the same upward pricing pressures that graphics cards will encounter next year, so there isn't the same sense of urgency to buy in that respect. I could be wrong in that, mind – and the same goes for all my musings here – so season this advice liberally.
