Rank 14902One of the best things about writing on a computer versus by hand is all the things you can do with text, from bolding a HARSH word to italicizing a quippy point. Now, Google's note-taking app, Keep, is adding these rich text formatting options and more to its web app. The text options have been available for Keep users on Android devices since late 2023.
Anyone who uses Keep on the web will be able to bold, italicize and underline their words. They will also be able to create specific sections using the heading one (H1) and heading two (H2) buttons. All of these formatting options will be available by clicking on the underlined A in the editors left-hand corner. It's a simple but beneficial update for anyone who wants to customize text from the web.

Google is currently rolling out this update to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, with the latter getting new features at least a week later than the former. The rich text formatting options are available to people with an individual Google account, Workspace Individual Subscribers and Google Workspace users. Rank 14906A researcher from Rapid7 created a working Proof of Concept for a CPU ransomwareSuch a ransomware would persist on a device even after the hard drive had been replacedThe PoC will (most likely) never see the light of day
A security researcher wrote ransomware code that infects the computer’s CPU, making it invisible to virtually every antivirus program out there, and making it persistent even when the victim takes out and replaces the computer’s hard drive. This is according to The Register, who recently spoke with Christiaan Beek, a cybersecurity researcher from Rapid7, who claims to have created a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) for such ransomware.Malware at the CPU level is not exactly arcane science. We’ve seen it in the past, with the likes of JoLax, CosmicStrand, and other UEFI firmware rootkits. However, this is the first time someone’s successfully played with ransomware this way.

CPU PoC
Beek said that he got the inspiration from a bug in AMD Zen processors that allowed threat actors to load malicious microcode and break the encryption at the hardware level. This would have allowed them to modify the behavior of the CPU as they saw fit.Beek says that the leaked Conti chat logs from 2022 suggested that actual cybercriminals were discussing the same idea before, but they haven’t yet gotten to a working solution. At least, not that the cybersecurity community knows of."If they worked on it a few years ago, you can bet some of them will get smart enough at some point and start creating this stuff," the researcher told the publication. He also said that he won’t be releasing the code on the internet: "Of course, we won't release that, but it's fascinating, right?"Ransomware remains one of the biggest threats out there, with companies of all sizes losing billions of dollars every year. In fact, a recent Veeam study, which gathered insights from 1,300 CISOs, IT leaders, and security professionals across the Americas, Europe, and Australia, found that nearly three-quarters of businesses were impacted by ransomware over the past year.Via The Register

Rank 14907It's nearly time to meet the newest member of Samsung's Galaxy S25 family, with the reveal of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge expected at today's virtual Galaxy Unpacked. The phone was first teased back in January, but Samsung has yet to spill all of the details on this new flagship device, beyond the fact that it will have a 200MP camera. But we do know it will be well worth waiting for, because the S25 Edge promises to open a new chapter in Galaxy smartphone design, given that it will surely be the slimmest phone it has ever made. We'll be covering the Galaxy Unpacked live stream when it starts at 8pm ET / 5pm PT today / 1am BST (Tuesday), and will bring you all the big news as it happens. But in the meantime, let's chew over what we know so far.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: What you need to know
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is a slimmed-down version of the Galaxy S25 familyExpect a 6.6-inch display, so the phone will sit between the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25 PlusA Snapdragon 8 Elite chip is expected to be at the heart of the phoneThere are only two rear cameras, but expect a punchy resolution for the main camera Pricing has yet to be revealed, but we predict the Galaxy S25 Edge will sit somewhere between the S25 Ultra and Plus
How to watch today's Galaxy Unpacked Live
You can read our guide to how to watch the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge launch live for full details, but in broad strokes the Galaxy Unpacked live stream will start at 8pm ET / 5pm PT on Monday, May 12, which is 1am BST and 10am AEST on Tuesday, May 13.You can watch the event live using the video below.
Hello! Managing Editor Roland Moore-Colyer here to take you through the run up to the second Samsung Galaxy Unpacked of 2025.
Unusual for Samsung, this Unpacked is taking place a lot later in the day than usual. Perhaps this is down to the showcase expected to be small and short.Ultimately, we’re only expecting to see the Galaxy S25 Edge at this Unpacked and nothing more. So that might explain why Samsung isn’t making this event one that’s at a reasonable time for most of its key markets.

A German consumer protection group is calling on Meta to halt its plan to start training its AI models with EU users' data. The Verbraucherzentrale North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has sent a cease and desist letter to the Big Tech giant on April 30, 2025, to demand that Facebook and Instagram stop their AI training plans. The group also threatens further legal action if Meta decides not to comply."It is imperative to act quickly, because once data has been incorporated into AI, it is difficult to retrieve it," said Christine Steffen, data protection expert at the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Advice Center, in an official announcement. All public posts and users' interactions are set to feed Meta AI starting from May 27, 2025. If they don't wish this to happen, EU users need to actively opt out.

An illegal approach?
Meta, the parent company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, successfully launched Meta AI in the EU in March, almost a year after the firm paused the launch amid growing concerns among EU data regulators. In its official announcement, the company ensures that its approach complies with European laws and regulations. "We welcome the opinion provided by the EDPB in December, which affirmed that our original approach met our legal obligations," Meta wrote.Specifically, the EDPB opinion provides a guide to help the Irish Data Protection Authority (DPA) assess the use of legitimate interest as a legal basis for AI models.German consumer experts, however, are now arguing that a reference to legitimate interest is insufficient for Meta AI. They also point out how users should not accept that the personal information they shared with Meta over the years could now be used for AI training."Furthermore, it cannot be ruled out that particularly sensitive information, which is particularly protected under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is also used for AI training purposes," said Steffen. "In that case, a so-called opt-out – as offered by Meta – is not sufficient; those affected would have to actively consent to this."
#Meta Skips Consent, Breaches #GDPR with EU Data AI Training. 📊🚫 #DataProtectionMatters #MakePrivacyReality pic.twitter.com/nYwZQOxtyLApril 18, 2025
Austrian privacy advocacy group noyb (None of Your Business) also believes that Meta AI may not be compliant with GDPR laws."Meta is deliberately trying to ignore European law and is putting its commercial interests above the fundamental right to data protection of those affected," said noyb's co-founder and lawyer Max Schrems in an official announcement, sharing his total support with Verbraucherzentrale NRW's actions."Meta should simply ask the affected people for their consent. But if Meta ignores EU law, there will be consequences for the whole of Europe," Schrems added. With the Meta AI officially kicking off in about two weeks ' time, we might see more actions from other European consumer groups, privacy authorities, or the DPA itself. In the meantime, privacy experts like Proton, the provider behind one of the best VPN and encrypted email apps, are urging people in Europe concerned about their privacy to opt out of Meta AI training. "It's hard to predict what this data might be used for in the future – better to be safe than sorry," Proton wrote on a LinkedIn post.If you are in the EU, you have until May 27 to stop Facebook and Instagram from using any of your data to train their AI models. To do so, you need to log in to your account and fill out an objection form (a form for Facebook and one for Instagram). A reason to object isn't required.

Rank 14918The high-octane racing film F1 hits theaters this June and there's a brand-new trailer to prove it. The new footage shows more of the story and gives a deeper dive into Brad Pitt's main character.
There's still gobs of actual Formula 1 racing, as the movie has received extensive involvement from the organization. It looks fast, frenetic and fun. There's also plenty of product placement during these scenes, which may be annoying to some but could add to the realism for others. In addition to F1 sponsors you'd see during a real race, we spotted logos for Shark/Ninja and Expensify on the fictional team that features in the film.
Brad Pitt is the primary star here, but the film also features Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies and Kim Bodnia. F1 is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who helmed the box office monster Top Gun: Maverick. He also made Tron: Legacy, though has no involvement with the upcoming Tron: Ares.
Ehren Kruger wrote the screenplay, who penned the aforementioned Top Gun sequel. The legendary Hans Zimmer created the score. This is certainly a high-end production.
Formula 1 has been growing in popularity these past few years, with a surge in filmmaking about this type of racing. Netflix released a documentary series about the organization called Formula 1: Drive to Survive, which is credited in growing the sport's audience away from Europe. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/tv-movies/the-new-f1-trailer-has-star-power-fast-cars-and-product-placement-165742662.html?src=rss

Rank 14921The James Webb Space Telescope, NASA’s successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, has captured new images of the auroras at Jupiter’s north pole. These massive auroras, caused by charged particles crashing into Jupiter’s atmosphere, are hundreds of times brighter than our own Aurora Borealis, and, for the first time, we can now see them in greater detail thanks to these new images.
Auroras on Earth are caused by solar storms, which occur when charged particles from the Sun collide with our upper atmosphere. This energizes the gases in the atmosphere, which gives them that distinctive colored glow that we know as the Northern (or Southern) Lights.
Among the coolest things we’ve gleaned from the telescope’s observations is that particles from solar storms are not the only source for Jupiter’s auroras. The giant planet’s strong magnetic field is also pulling in charged particles from its surroundings, which includes particles thrown into the atmosphere from volcanic eruptions on Io, a moon orbiting Jupiter. Together, these varied sources lead to a more complex auroral system than the one on Earth.
The high sensitivity of Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) helps shed light (pun intended) on the rapidly changing features of Jupiter’s auroras. Scientists were able to see details and bright spots that weren’t visible with Hubble. Jonathan Nichols, who leads the team at the UK’s University of Leicester that captured the images, shared his excitement over the discovery with NASA.
In describing seeing the images, he said, "What a Christmas present it was — it just blew me away!" In describing what they learned from the images, he explained: "We wanted to see how quickly the auroras change, expecting them to fade in and out ponderously, perhaps over a quarter of an hour or so. Instead, we observed the whole auroral region fizzing and popping with light, sometimes varying by the second."
The team was able to capture images of the auroras from the Hubble and Webb telescope simultaneously, which allowed them to directly compare data from both Ultraviolet and Near-Infrared images at once. It became evident with these comparisons that the Webb telescope was capturing details and nuance that the Hubble was completely missing. This is a testament to the power of the newer telescope and raised further questions about how the auroras function.
Researchers hope these findings will help them further understand the inner workings of Jupiter’s magnetic field, and even help provide insights into how the planet heats and cools. There is a lot to learn about the gas giant’s atmosphere, and these images are just one step along the way. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/science/space/nasas-webb-telescope-captures-mesmerizing-images-of-jupiters-auroras-171107945.html?src=rss

Rank 14924The FTC says a remedy should be "pry open" previously closed markets to competitionGoogle must "share targeted portions of its search index" and moreIt might still have to sell off Chrome and end exclusivity deals
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has spoken out in favor of the Department of Justice's (DOJ) proposal for Google to share search data with competitors, stating that the resolution would include sufficient privacy safeguards. The proposal aims to break Google's illegal monopoly in online search, per an August 2024 federal judge ruling. The company accounts for nine in 10 of all searches globally as of April 2025, according to Statcounter data.In order to comply with DOJ proposals, Google must "share targeted portions of its search index, user, and ads data with certain competitors for a limited period of time with suitable security and privacy safeguards."
FTC agrees with DOJ proposal to tackle Google search market dominance
The Commission explained in a brief that any remedy, including in the case of Google, should "effectively pry open to competition a market that has been closed by defendants’ illegal restraints."The brief concludes that the DOJ's Revised Proposed Final Judgement is "well designed to protect user privacy as it seeks to "pry open' long-monopolized markets."It's hoped that, by increasing competition, Google will be forced to enhance its privacy practices, marking an overall win for American citizens. The proposal also includes appointing a compliance committee, but the DOJ is still urging the court to force Google to divest its Chrome browser and to stop paying Apple and others to set Google as the default search engine for millions globally.Katherine White, Deputy Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, commented: "The privacy safeguards proposed by DOJ are in line with the measures the FTC has required numerous companies to take to address privacy and data security failures."TechRadar Pro has asked Google for a comment about both existing remedies and the ongoing propositions – any update will be posted here.

Rank 14925Google Messages has already improved a lot since it landed over 11 years ago – and over the past couple of weeks we've seen Google test more new features that could roll out widely very soon.Though Google has been dropping new features in Messages since the beginning of the year, these past few weeks have been a particularly busy time, especially for group chats in Google Messages. But in addition to its new chat icons and group chat links, there's a number of other new design features and overdue functions that could help enhance the Google Messages user experience.Despite not all of these features being widely available, Google has hinted that they will be rolled out very soon, and we have a lot of APK teardowns from the likes of 9to5Google to thank for an early peek at them. Here's a look at what's likely coming to Google Messages very soon...
1. 'Delete for everyone' function
Google Messages' 'Delete for everyone' function is the latest of the new features that have emerged. First spotted back in February, more users are starting to see it crop up in their Google Messages app but it's not yet available for everyone - suggesting that it will be rolled out gradually. There's already a 'Delete for me' option but this new update will allow you to remove messages from the view of everyone in a chat. Users who have access have noticed that 'Delete for everyone' only works in larger group chats, and have yet to find a 1:1 chat where they can use it.There's also a 15-minute time window, meaning that if you want to remove a text from a conversation, you’ll have to be quick.
RCS message delete is also rolling out to beta people. from r/GoogleMessages
2. Group chat links
Just like other messaging platforms, group chat links make it easier to gather your contacts into one big conversation hassle-free, and Google Messages is following suit.It was first uncovered in an APK teardown by Android Authority and will allow you to create invite links that you can share in standard link form or through a QR code that others can scan.In the image taken from the teardown, there’s a toggle you can enable that will give you two options; to create a single-use link, or one that can be reused and distributed. Links will expire after 30 days.
3. New group chat icons
On the topic of group chats, Google Messages is paying a lot of attention to this aspect of its messaging platform and is introducing new group chat icons.A number of users noticed this in the Google Messages app by opening a group conversation, navigating the top bar to reveal the group details. If a pencil icon appears at the right of your group chat’s existing image, it means you have the freedom to set your own icon. After experimenting with the feature users have noted that you won't be able to set gifs as icons, and you won't be able to return to a previous icon once a new one has been set.At the moment, group chat icons in Google Messages only show up to four circle profile images, which doesn’t make it easy to distinguish between chats, so a smaller feature like this will not only be a great design upgrade but a practical one, too.
4. Expanded text message field
For a while, Google Messages hasn't been a user's best friend when it comes to composing longer texts, but that's all about to change as Google Messages is expanding its 4-line view limit. The new text field limit will allow up to 14 lines per message making it easier for you to view longer messages before you send them.
5. New function for snoozing messages
At the same time as group chat links were spotted in Google Messages, there was also speculation of a new group chat muting feature – and it looks as though it's ready to roll out. This will see a new button added to the toolbar at the top of the screen when you long-press on a chat, which will then show a second menu where you can choose to mute a group chat for one hour, eight hours, 24 hours. There's even an 'always' option, and the menu reassures you that other members won't see that you have muted the chat.
6. Live location sharing and content warnings
Live location sharing is a God-send, especially when it comes to finding your friends in larger crowds, and this new feature has been teased by an in-app code.Users can currently share their location with another person through Google Maps, but it only shows up as a static Google Maps pin. If you move around, this means you’ll have to send your location again – but Google could be working to combat this. Last time we checked the feature wasn't live for us, however there's a chance Google could be experimenting with it behind the scenes.Additionally, Sensitive Content Warnings went live in a Google Messages' beta a few weeks ago for some users. Accounts owned by users under 18 will automatically have this setting enabled, and users over 18 will have the option to turn it off.
7. Media quality upgrade
In addition to a redesigned gallery, you'll be able to send photos and videos on Google Messages in their original quality which was first spotted in beta in February. The new layout includes a “HD” icon which you can find in the top-right of the final screen before sending an image. When you tap the icon, a new menu appears allowing you to select from two options; “Optimized for chat”, which trades some quality for a lower file size, or “Original quality”, which sends the original image as found on your phone’s built-in storage.

Rank 14926Apple pushed iOS 18.5 on Monday. The most eye-popping new feature is a new wallpaper to honor the LGBTQ+ community ahead of Pride Month. Apart from that, the iPhone update isn't exactly a barnburner, with only minor features and bug fixes.
Apple's Pride Harmony wallpaper has bold, colorful stripes that change position as you move, lock or unlock your device. You can find it in Settings > Wallpaper or by long-pressing on your lock screen. If you're an Apple Watch owner, you'll find a corresponding Pride Harmony watch face in watchOS 11.5. That can pair well with Apple's new Pride Edition Sport Band, which went on sale earlier this month.
Apart from that, there are only a couple of (barely) notable features in iOS 18.5. The Mail app has a new option to show or hide contact photos within the app. (Before, you had to dig into Settings.) Tap the three-dot context menu and toggle "Show Contact Photos." There's also a redesigned AppleCare and Warranty banner in the Settings app with an option to "Learn more about coverage." (Do try to contain your excitement.)
As always, you can install the update by heading to Settings > General > Software Update. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/mobile/smartphones/ios-185-arrives-with-a-new-wallpaper-for-pride-month-172836075.html?src=rss

Rank 14930Apple is paying out $95 million to settle a Siri class-action lawsuitIf you think you're eligible, you need to submit a claim by July 2Apple has denied all wrongdoing in settling the case
Back in January, Apple agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit related to its Siri voice assistant. The case saw some Apple device owners claim that Siri had disclosed their private conversations to advertisers, following "unintended Siri activations".Apple denied all wrongdoing and agreed to settle the case to "avoid additional litigation" (more on that below). But the result of the 'Lopez vs Apple Inc' suit means that, if you owned and used an Apple device between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024, you could be due a small slice of the payout. Those who are eligible could be a line for a maximum payout of $100 (that's $20 per device, for up to five Siri devices). Not exactly a lottery jackpot, but worth investigating if you think you've been affected by unintentionally activating Siri during a private conversation during that period. As The Verge reports, many of those affected will have received an email titled “Lopez Voice Assistant Class Action Settlement" (from the address 'info@lopezvoiceassistantsettlement.com'). Despite sounding like spam, this is a genuine email containing details like your 'claimant identification code' and more. But even if you didn't receive this, you can also submit a claim. Here's a quick breakdown of what happened, how Apple's responded and how to file a claim if you think you've been affected...
What happened?
The lawsuit's plaintiffs alleged that "confidential or private communications" were "obtained by Apple and/or shared with third parties as a result of an unintended Siri activation". According to the suit's homepage, that took place sometime between 17 September, 2014 and 31 December, 2024.But how? Apple has always maintained that iPhones don't 'listen' to their owners, aside from when wake words like 'Hey, Siri' are used. Well, the key is that phrase "unintended Siri activation".The plaintiffs say that Siri not only tuned into private conversations by mistake – perhaps by mishearing a wake word – but also used that information to subsequently trigger ads.
Again, Apple denies that this is possible, stating that "Siri data has never been used to build marketing profiles and it has never been sold to anyone for any purpose".Nevertheless, as Reuters reported, two plaintiffs claimed that their mentions on Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants later resulted in them getting ads for those products, while another plaintiff claimed they got ads for a brand name surgical treatment after talking about it with their doctor.
What did Apple say?
Despite agreeing to pay $95 million to settle the Siri lawsuit, Apple was pretty bullish in its response – and admitted no wrongdoing, despite settling the suit.Apple told us that "Siri data has never been used to build marketing profiles and it has never been sold to anyone for any purpose,” adding that collected data is only used to improve the virtual assistant.
(Image credit: Shutterstock / Tada Images)
In a separate statement, it added: "Apple settled this case to avoid additional litigation so we can move forward from concerns about third-party grading that we already addressed in 2019. We use Siri data to improve Siri, and we are constantly developing technologies to make Siri even more private."That's fairly emphatic then, but the settlement means that potentially millions of Apple device owners could be eligible for a claim – here's how to check to see if you're one of them.
How to claim
(Image credit: Lopez v Apple Inc)
If you think you're eligible for a payout in the 'Lopez v Apple Inc' lawsuit, you'll need to use the official claim form and submit it by July 2, 2025.You'll need to meet some pretty specific criteria in order to be eligible for a payout. That criteria is below and the claim form asks you to confirm all of the below under oath:
between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024 you bought or owned a Siri device in the United States, and enabled Siri on that deviceyou experienced an "unintended Siri activation" in that periodthat unintended Siri activation took place "during a conversation intended to be confidential and private"
You can make claims for up to five Siri devices – these can include iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, iMacs, HomePods, the iPod touch, or Apple TVs.As mentioned above, many of those who are potentially eligible will have received an email titled "Lopez Voice Assistant Class Action Settlement". But you don't necessarily need to have received that email to make a claim – if not, just click "New Claim" in the claim form and enter your details from there.

Rank 14931The NBA is making its debut on Peacock this fall and it should be an "exciting and inclusive streaming experience," according to NBCUniversal. It should also bring a few changes as NBC has announced new features including Instant Game Access and Performance View.
For starters, users can watch games instantly with the Live in Browse feature, meaning the match will start right on Peacock's homepage. There will also be real-time information on display. Peacock will also offer a Catch Up option for anyone not online from the first play, letting users watch key moments before jumping into the remaining live game. The streamer offers a similar feature for its English Premier League coverage.
Then there's Performance View, which shows a lot of the key stats, such as which players are on a shooting streak and where they might score from next. While broadcasts typically show similar information during replays, it's a bit more context than a viewer would usually get. All in all this on-screen data feels like something between a video game and a broadcast — though it can be turned off at any time.
There's also a ScoreCard feature, which NBC calls "bingo meets fantasy sports." Alerts will inform participants how they stack up compared to other users and, if they end up top-ranked, their username might appear in the livestream.
The new features follow NBCUniversal's agreement with the basketball organization to show NBA and WNBA games across its channels. The 11-year deal starts with the upcoming 2025-2026 NBA season and includes exclusive livestreams on Peacock of national Monday night games.
"We’re bringing the same level of innovation, inspiration and commitment that we’ve brought to so many other huge sports moments and leagues to deliver an intuitive, interactive and reliable streaming experience that the full range of NBA fans will enjoy," President of NBC Sports Rick Cordella, said in a statement. However, a similar deal with the Premier League began in 2021 and has yet to offer anything to this level. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/streaming/peacock-promises-new-streaming-features-when-the-nba-arrives-this-fall-175338715.html?src=rss

Rank 14934The Anker 321 MagGo magnetic battery pack is on sale for just $22 via Amazon. This is a discount of 15 percent. This is a limited-time deal, however, and the sale ends when the stock runs out.
Anker makes good stuff, as evidenced by another MagGo-branded item topping our list of the best power banks. While this one didn't make the list, it's still a great entry-level battery pack for the budget-conscious. It magnetically attaches to the back of a smartphone, thus the name, and is available in multiple colors.
Once attached, the 5,000mAh battery provides up to 19 hours of additional battery life. It offers simultaneous charging, so the bank can charge as the phone juices up. It's also light and compact, with a design that easily fits in a pocket or bag. It does connect via USB-C, so it's not really ideal for older iPhones with the dreaded Lightning port.
This one doesn't include a kickstand, which could be a dealbreaker for some. We got you covered. The Anker 621 MagGo is also heavily discounted on Amazon. This price is down to $32 from $48. The 621 includes a kickstand, while still retaining the ability to magnetically attach to the back of a smartphone.

Rank 14939The Paper, a new spin-off of The Office set at a small Ohio newspaper, will premiere exclusively on Peacock in September, according to a post from the streaming service's X account. Considering NBCUniversal's streaming service has mostly existed as a dedicated The Office and Parks & Recreation rewatch tool, this is a pretty big get.
The new series "features the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch," but this time looks at a different industry — in this case, journalism. The Paper covers "a historic Toledo newspaper, The Truth Teller, and the eager publisher that is trying to revive it," according to a press release from NBCUniversal's Upfront presentation.

Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) star alongside Oscar Nuñez, who is reprising his role as Oscar from The Office, following a lateral career move that finds his character as the accountant for a struggling newspaper. The Paper is very explicitly described as being "from the universe of The Office," though, so it's possible the connections to the previous series don't end there.
The Paper was co-created by Greg Daniels, the creator of the US version of The Office, and Michael Koman, an executive producer and writer on Nathan for You. NBCUniversal hasn't shared a specific date for when the series will premiere, beyond that it will land in September.
Like most streaming services, Peacock launched with splashy prestige TV shows, but has continually struggled to find original content that keeps subscribers around beyond its back catalog of classic sitcoms and reality shows. Streaming rights to the Olympics and weird experiments like the "AI vs. a nun" drama Mrs. Davis definitely appeal to someone (me, primarily), but it hasn't produced explosive growth in Peacock's subscriber numbers. Per NBCUniversal's last earnings report, Peacock has grown from 36 million paid subscribers at the end of 2024 to 41 million in March 2025, but it's still a money-losing operation. The Paper seems like a safer bet to keep current subscribers happy and draw lapsed The Office fans back in.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/streaming/peacocks-the-office-spin-off-arrives-this-september-182859797.html?src=rss

Rank 14942Nintendo will include an optional battery preservation mode with the Switch 2, which the company revealed via its Nintendo Today! news app. This will cap the console's charge as it approaches 90 percent and then maintain it at that amount.
Why do this? It's to keep the battery in tip-top shape. Rechargeable lithium batteries can degrade if kept in a fully-charged state. So the feature will let users sacrifice 10 percent of playtime for ongoing battery maintenance. That seems like a fair tradeoff to me.
Nintendo Switch 2 has an option to stop charging the battery at ~90% 🎮This is to reduce battery deterioration 🔋 pic.twitter.com/ytqPfl5dKO— Culture Crave 🍿 (@CultureCrave) May 12, 2025
Nintendo didn't invent this concept. Many smartphones have been offering something like this for years. Valve has also been testing a similar feature for the Steam Deck.
When you unbox that shiny, new Switch 2, just head into system settings and look for a toggle that reads "Stop Charging Around 90%." Tap it and you'll be all set. Of course, you have to secure a Switch 2 pre-order to do this, and that's easier said than done. The console will be released on June 5.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/nintendo/the-switch-2-has-a-mode-that-caps-battery-charge-at-90-percent-185219689.html?src=rss

Rank 14949Ticketmaster wants you to know it's "all in" on up-front pricing. In a blog post published on Monday, the company triumphantly declared that it's "putting fans first" and including fees in the first price you see for a ticket. Not mentioned in Ticketmaster's announcement: An FTC rule requiring that exact change just so happened to take effect today.
The FTC's bipartisan junk fees rule was finalized in December. It requires live event ticket vendors, hotels and rentals to "tell consumers the whole truth up front about prices and fees." Starting on Monday, they must display the full price (minus taxes) more prominently than other pricing information. Astonishing how Ticketmaster's consumer-friendly policy arrived on the very day Live Nation was required by law to do so. (The Lord works in mysterious ways.)
Ticketmaster
The company added another handy feature on Monday that wasn't mandated by law. The new Ticketmaster queue should, at least in theory, make buying in-demand tickets less frustrating. When an event goes on sale, you'll be placed in a queue and told your exact place in line. The idea is to prevent bots from snatching everything up before you can even get the dang page to load.
Once you're in line, there's no need to mash F5 or Cmd-R. The page will automatically refresh as you move up in line. For the biggest shows, availability and pricing will update in real time as you wait.
When it's your turn, you'll get a notification. If you're on a mobile device, it will be an app alert. If you're using a browser, you'll hear a chime. So, crank that volume up if you have to step away.
Waiting rooms typically open 15 minutes before tickets go on sale, so check in early. For the smoothest process, the company recommends saving your payment info ahead of time with a current email, phone number and billing info. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/ticketmaster-proudly-announces-it-will-follow-the-law-and-show-prices-up-front-194624489.html?src=rss

Rank 14950Google is debuting an AI-powered image-to-video tool on smartphones built by the Chinese firm HonorHonor’s new 400 series phones are getting the Google Veo-powered tool even before Google Pixel phones. The feature produced five-second animated videos in portrait or landscape orientation from a single image.
Google is showing off a new AI image-to-video feature using its Veo 2 model, but Google Pixel owners won't be able to use it just yet. Instead, Chinese phone company Honor, spun out of Huawei, is beating Pixel to the punch by incorporating the feature into its upcoming Honor 400 series of smartphones. The feature processes still images straight from your photo gallery into five-second animated clips. You don't need a Gemini subscription or even a cloud connection to make the videos. Honor 400 owners will be able to feed the tool any image, whether a new photo, an AI-generated cartoon, or even a classic painting. After about a minute, you'll see a video of some kind of motion based on the initial upload. The AI can simulate camera moves, make subjects breathe or blink, or otherwise imbue life into the pixels.Honor's place as the first home of the feature is born out of a deal with Google Cloud. It marks the first time the Veo 2 AI video model has been integrated directly into a smartphone. And while Gemini Advanced users can access a web-based version of Veo, Pixel owners don't have any special access to the video maker.

Honor before Pixel
Honor has pitched a lot of AI plans for the 500 series of phones. Google is providing several AI tools beyond the video generator. Google's Magic Eraser, AI Outpainting, and other creative flourishes are also baked into the smartphone's native camera and gallery apps. Of course, even the most magical AI gimmick won’t mean much if the phone itself is junk. But by the looks of it, the Honor 400 and 400 Pro are coming in hot with some decent mid- to upper-tier specs and a starting cost of around $550.The Honor 400 phones will debut in China and Europe and are likely to appear in India too, but may not be seen much in the U.S. The ability to shoot, edit, and animate all from the same device without hopping between different apps might entice a lot of content creators and AI fans to pick the phone.Honor getting early access to Veo 2, when even Pixel phones don’t have it yet, hints at a broader shift in how Google is approaching AI distribution. Rather than hoarding features for its own devices, it seems more interested in becoming an AI platform for the whole Android ecosystem, and potentially grabbing a little more influence in China while it’s at it.
