How to watch New York Marathon 2025: free streams, race schedule, preview

    Picture from cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net

Yet the 26.2-mile course around the five boroughs is about more than the big names and celebrity faces, it's about the thousands of amateur runners competing against the clock and raising money for charities across the world.Kipchoge will complete the set when he takes to the New York roads for the first time on Sunday. The 40-year-old Kenyan great will pick up the Seven Star medal by running each of the seven marathon majors in his esteemed career, but will also want to prove his class over what is a stacked men's elite field. Two-time Olympic champion Kipchoge will line up against Dutch defending champion Abdi Nageeye, plus fellow Kenyans, and for NYC Marathon winners, Evans Chebet and Albert Korir. There's also plenty of interest in Kipchoge's old track rival Kenenisa Bekele, who is a late entrant, while Paris 2024 bronze medallist Benson Kipruto will also be on the start line.Hassan's biggest competition will come from those who pushed the Dutchwoman hardest en route to marathon gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Hellen Obiri took bronze in the French capital and fellow Kenyan Sharon Lokedi, who finished fourth, will be joined by compatriot Sheila Chepkirui in trying to disrupt Hassan, who ran 2:20 at the Sydney Marathon earlier this year. Lokedi (2022), Obiri (2023) and Chepkirui (2024) have won the past three marathons on Staten Island. Max’s password sharing crackdown will take a while before it goes ‘full steam’, WBD says

    Picture from cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net

Max's crackdown on password sharing is already in effect in the US, and we're expecting it to come to more territories this year and next. But while the crackdown is indeed coming to more places, it's not doing so at high speed. That's according to Warner Bros Discovery's CEO of streaming, JB Perrette, who explained during a conference call that "the password sharing crackdown... will take 12 months to 18 months to get to full steam".It's still coming and will begin to be more enforced as the pricing for 'Extra Members' is announced in more regions, but it looks like for the time being at least Max is more interested in growing subscribers by deploying the carrot rather than the stick.

How Max wants to take subscriptions to the max and bring its shows to the UK and Europe

(Image credit: Jeff Kravitz/Warner Bros. Discovery)

As Perrette told investors and journalists, there are "several big levers" to improve its streaming business and revenues. The first is rolling out to more places: "We've still got almost half the world to go to in terms of rollout in new markets." Those new markets will include the UK, Germany and Italy "in the beginning of next year".The second big lever is getting more subscribers in the places where Max is already available. Perrette noted that Max is just 12 months into the "lower priced ad-light" service "to go after more price-sensitive consumers."But for Perrette, "content is obviously the fuel of this entire thing" and the content slate for "the next 18 to 24 months is stronger than anything we've ever had and more consistent... we went from not good to good" and the next step is "to go from good to great. That will help engagement, that will help time spent, that will help monetization."Disney's David Zaslav also took part in the conversation, and said that the bundling that's worked well in the US will be coming to other countries too. "Not just a bundle for price, but one that has a better customer experience... what we did here in the US with Hulu, Disney+ and Max." As Zaslav explained, the bundles mean "less marketing, much lower churn".Zaslav predicts more consolidation in the streaming market. "Ultimately there's going to be 5 or 6 players," he said. Bar a few regional players that may be dependent on sports, "there will be [only] a few global players... it'll be a better consumer experience and some of those 5 or 6 may come together in a bundle to make that experience even more compelling."

‘The keyword is speed to power’: Dell, Apollo, and Jera launch a $140 billion plan to build up to 4GW of AI data centers across Japan and Asia

    Picture from cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net

Dell, Apollo and Jera plan up to 4GW of AI infrastructure within five yearsA $15bn Tokyo project will launch Japan’s biggest AI infrastructure push yetJera wants gas power and AI computing facilities developed at unprecedented speedJapan is preparing a major expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure, with Dell, Apollo and Jera planning investments potentially reaching $140bn.The companies intend to develop between 3GW and 4GW of AI computing facilities alongside gas-fired generation during the next five years.Their first project is expected to cost $15bn and deliver 400MW near Tokyo, with operations scheduled to begin around 2028.Speed and power drive the planA Jera executive said the companies are seeking faster development by linking electricity generation directly with computing facilities.“The keyword is speed to power. If you see Asia outside China, Japan is a major data centre market,” said Yukio Kani, global chief executive of Jera.Kani said Jera’s annual LNG trading volume of 35mn tonnes could support power plants serving computing facilities for planned sites. The proposed Tokyo-area development would operate independently from Japan’s national electricity network.Apollo will finance the initial $15bn facility, while Dell and Jera will contribute technology and energy infrastructure capabilities. The estimated cost of $35bn to $45bn for each gigawatt places the potential programme near $140bn in investment. The partners also intend to standardise construction methods for computing facilities and electricity infrastructure. That approach could allow projects to be replicated elsewhere, with companies considering additional developments beyond Japan. The planned capacity would give the partnership a substantial presence in Japan’s expanding market for electricity-intensive artificial intelligence services. However, the proposed scale depends on delivering both generation assets and computing facilities within five years.Japan seeks more AI capacityThe proposed facility near Tokyo is expected to become one of Asia’s largest artificial intelligence computing projects outside China when operations begin. Its independent electricity supply could reduce reliance on the existing grid, although there are no details about generation capacity. The partners have not limited their ambitions to Japan, saying facilities and power projects could be developed elsewhere across Asia.Japan already hosts major operators including NTT Data and SoftBank, while Blackstone has announced a separate $30bn expansion programme in the coming years.Despite those investments, Japan remains well behind the United States and China in electricity use associated with installed computing facilities.According to the International Data Center Authority, US data centres consume 29.2GW of electricity, representing 43% of global data centre consumption.China accounts for 8.5GW, while Japan consumes only 1.7GW, equivalent to approximately 12.5% and 2.5%, respectively. However, Japan’s figure could rise as the government seeks ¥32.7tn, equivalent to $206bn, in public and private investment through 2035.This investment forms part of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s plan to support strategically important sectors. The programme includes cloud computing and data centre infrastructure among the areas designated for strategic investment through 2035.These planned investments therefore give Japan a larger role in the regional expansion of AI computing infrastructure and electricity supply. Openreach: UK landline phones will be switched off in 100 days, so make sure your connections are ready

    Picture from cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net

Openreach warns landline phones will stop working on January 31, 2027Legacy PTSN system is going digital, so users should switch nowOpenreach remind businesses and consumers alike to check their connectionsOpenreach has issued a reminder warning that the UK's legacy landline phone network will be switched off in less than 100 days.BT's infrastructure arm, responsible for deploying, maintaining and upgrading most of the country's networks, has reminded users the copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PTSN) network will be retired on January 31, 2027.There will be no extension to this cut-off, meaning users, both business and consumer alike, will need to ensure their systems are ready for the change.Time to switchThe news of the "big switch off", as Openreach's advice hub calls it, should not be a surprise, as plans were first announced to shut down the PSTN and ISDN networks by the end of 2025 back in 2017 - with the deadline later extended to 2027.It notes that the aging landline network is harder to maintain and more vulnerable to faults, whilst also being unable to keep up with the demands posed by modern usage.Openreach says it has already supported the migration of around 15 million lines off the old copper-based network, and although most of our homes and offices will have already switched to digital-based Internet Protocol (IP) fiber networks, there are a wide range of systems which still rely on PSTN connectivity.Among the items needing upgrading point-of-sale terminals in shops, fire and security alarms, and personal care alarms for elderly and vulnerable people.“Businesses and organisations that delay action are making things harder for themselves, noted James Lilley, Director of All-IP at Openreach."The straightforward migrations have largely been completed. What's left are the complex connections that underpin critical operations, requiring careful planning, supplier coordination, and thorough testing. We are urging businesses to act now, audit their remaining analogue services, and work with their communications provider on a migration plan today.”Openreach's website notes the move to digital phone lines will help provide users with a more reliable service, better-quality calls and smarter blocking of unwanted calls. It tells users to not wait until the deadline, and to get in contact with your service provider as soon as possible to get the move going.Anyone who has not switched by the January 2027 deadline may see limited service after that time, and may be moved to the Emergency Voice and Access Continuity (EVAc) service, a temporary emergency voice-only service which keeps basic voice calls working for a limited time.An FAQ includes the question "I don't want broadband. Can I have a phone line only?" but includes only a wishy-washy response - "If you have a phone line but don’t have broadband, your service provider will help you find the most suitable digital option for your needs."

Instagram reaches 3 billion monthly users

    Picture from o.aolcdn.com

Nearly 15 years in, Instagram has passed a new milestone: the app now reaches 3 billion monthly users, Mark Zuckerberg shared in a post on Threads. That's up from 2 billion monthly users in 2022.

Meta doesn't regularly share monthly or daily user numbers for its "family" of apps, but Facebook reached 2 billion daily users in 2023; WhatsApp passed 2 billion monthly users in 2020. The company reported 3.48 billion "daily active people" across facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger last quarter.

Meta shared the latest metric as it reportedly plans some significant changes to Instagram. According to Bloomberg, Meta will soon make Reels an even more prominent part of the app. Instagram exec Adam Mosseri told the publication that users will see a redesigned navigation bar that will "highlight private messaging and Reels." The company will also run a test in South Korea and India that will allow users to set Reels as the default feed for the app. (Instagram's newly-announced iPad app already makes Reels the default feed in order "to reflect how people use bigger screens today," the company has said.)

It's probably no coincidence that these changes come as the United States government edges closer toward an agreement that will put the US version of TikTok largely in the hands of US-based investors. Despite more than a year of uncertainty surrounding the app's future in the United States, TikTok is still a formidable competitor to Meta more broadly and Instagram specifically. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/social-media/instagram-reaches-3-billion-monthly-users-160554420.html?src=rss

Donald Trump is reportedly preparing a sweep of pro-AI executive orders

    Picture from o.aolcdn.com

We know what you’re thinking: there just isn’t enough AI around right now. Luckily for you, Donald Trump emphatically agrees. According to a new report from Reuters, his administration is assembling a number of executive actions that would significantly increase the energy supply used for expanding artificial intelligence. The US and China are currently battling it out to lead the way in the rapidly growing sector, but American companies will need more infrastructure to make the advances Trump wants.

"With the right Government policies, we can solidify our position as the global leader in AI and secure a brighter future for all Americans," he said back in January when signing an executive order in his first days in office that made clear his intention to reduce any regulatory hurdles to allow unchecked development in the area.

Reuters was told by sources that asked to remain anonymous that, if passed, the planned executive orders would "make it easier for power-generating projects to connect to the grid, and provide federal land on which to build the data centers needed to expand AI technology." The Trump administration is reportedly also planning to release an "AI action plan" and schedule a number of public events that promote its ongoing efforts.

Power-hungry data centers are often large and not quick to build, but in an attempt to speed up the process, Trump’s actions may offer land managed by the Defense Department or Interior Department to AI project developers. A nationwide Clean Water Act permit, meanwhile, would mean permission to build would no longer operate on a state-by-state basis, making it easier for developers to get projects off the ground.

Donald Trump’s AI crusade has been ongoing since he took office. After initially taking an eraser to Biden’s extensive AI protection framework, the US House of Representatives narrowly passed a "big, beautiful bill" that places a 10-year ban on state AI regulations. It still has to pass through the Senate. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/donald-trump-is-reportedly-preparing-a-sweep-of-pro-ai-executive-orders-171856144.html?src=rss

The official Samsung Store has just brought back an incredible deal that hasn't been seen since the device was available for preorder a few months ago. It's an excellent combination of a free storage upgrade alongside either a trade-in rebate of up to $1,000 or an instant $300 price cut. What makes this deal so compelling, aside from the fact that it's available on an unlocked device, is that you get something regardless of whether you're trading in or not. Not looking to trade? Then you'll still get a 512GB device for just $1,699 right now.Conversely, if you do have a decent device ready to hand over, then you can get a Galaxy Z Fold 7 for just $999 here. Either way, you're potentially getting a lot of phone for your money here.Samsung's excellent Galaxy Z Fold 7 dealSamsung Galaxy Z Fold 7: free storage upgrade, plus $300 off upfront or up to $1,000 off with a trade-inThe official Samsung Store has just brough back the best deal yet on the stunning Galaxy Z Fold 7. Not only can you get a free storage upgrade right now, but Samsung is also offering the choice between a $300 upfront discount or a hefty trade-in rebate of up to $1,000 off - both superb deals that are available on unlocked as well as carrier devices.View DealSee more: check out all of today's phone deals at SamsungSamsung's best foldable device yet(Image credit: Future)We're big fans of the Fold 7 here at TechRadar; so much so that we awarded the device an impressive four and a half stars out of five when we reviewed it earlier this year. While expensive, it's undoubtedly the best foldable device yet from the brand, with its stunningly thin design, expanded 8-inch main display, and impressive 200MP camera. Under the hood, the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset provides plenty of power, while the latest AI features are surprisingly useful - if somewhat still in their infancy.Combined, these selling points make the Fold 7 a niche buy, but one that we absolutely recommend if you can take full advantage of the expansive screen real estate.

Trump plans to shut down the Consumer Product Safety Commission

    Picture from o.aolcdn.com

In the latest blow to what was generally a functional government, President Donald Trump wants to eliminate the independent agency in charge of issuing recalls and protecting US citizens from harmful products. The Office of Management and Budget has suggested the responsibilities of the Consumer Product Safety Commission should be folded into "a nonexistent division within the Department of Health and Human Services," according to a joint letter from lawmakers. And to seemingly start the process, Trump has fired the commission's three Democratic members without cause, The Washington Post reports.

Following a meeting with the Department of Government Efficiency, Commissioners Mary Boyle and Richard Trumka Jr. received emails on May 8 informing them they'd been fired. A third commissioner, Alexander Hoehn-Saric wasn't formerly fired, but shared via a statement on May 9 that the Acting Chairman of the commission was "preventing [him] from executing [his] duties."

Commissioners in agencies like the CPSC, FCC or the FTC are appointed by the President, approved by the Senate and normally serve out their term in its entirety. Removing a commissioner requires the President to determine that they've neglected their duty or are credibly accused of wrongdoing.

See you in court, Mr. President. pic.twitter.com/cSr114Q6gL— Commissioner Rich Trumka Jr. (@TrumkaCPSC) May 9, 2025

That Constitutionally protected standard has not been Trump's concern since he took office. The Democratic members of the FTC say they were illegally fired in a similar fashion back in March, and are now suing the US government. CPSC Commissioner Trumka has announced that he plans to take his case to court, too. The US Supreme Court is considering a case that could determine whether Trump can actually fire members of independent agencies, but until that verdict is reached, we're in limbo.

Eliminating the CPSC or at the very least, its Democratic wing, means businesses will receive a lot less scrutiny over the products they sell. Plenty of companies would prefer not to deal with the hassle of recalls and fines. Amazon even proposed in March that the CPSC was too powerful and called the agency "unconstitutionally constructed." Under the Trump administration, those complaints are apparently being heard and acted upon. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/trump-plans-to-shut-down-the-consumer-product-safety-commission-214635181.html?src=rss

Taking over from Gareth Southgate after his 8-year spell, Tuchel has a perfect record in competitive matches, winning all 5 World Cup qualifiers with his side yet to concede a goal. The only blemish on Tuchel's record so far is a 3-1 loss to the hands of Senegal in a friendly in June.Tuchel will be hoping to guide his side to an eighth consecutive win against Wales, a record that sees England unbeaten vs The Dragons since 1984. However, this will be no mean feat as his side face a Craig Bellamy Wales team that look completely rejuvenated in recent times.Since Craig Bellamy's appointment in July 2024, Wales have only lost twice across a 12-game span, with only one of those losses coming in a competitive outing. Their one competitive loss came at the hands of Belgium who they went toe-to-toe with in a 4-3 thriller.Bellamy has given Wales fans hope, proving that there is life to this team after Gareth Bale's retirement. The Dragons will be hoping that a win against their neighbouring country to end a 41-year drought will give them the momentum to push through the qualifying stage of the 2026 World Cup.We test and review VPN services in the context of legal recreational uses. The world’s first ‘concentric’ turntable and CD player combo is the turducken of hi-fi

    Picture from cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net

It's music disc InceptionVinyl, CD, CD-R and CD-RW playback£299 (about $400 / AU$605)If you're feeling fancy this Christmas you could treat your guests to a turducken, a Cajun creation where a chicken is stuffed into a duck and the duck is then stuffed into a turkey*. Mixx Audio appears to have created the audio equivalent: its new Analog+ all-in-one music system features an integrated CD player built into a turntable, in the center of the platter so they're concentric circles."We wanted to create something truly distinctive," Mixx Audio CEO Prash Vadgama says, and I would say it's mission accomplished. It's very weird, but it makes sense for people who are short of space and want a single do-everything device.(Image credit: MIXX Audio)MIXX Analog+: Key features and specificationsInspired by the look of 1980s hi-fi components and available in black or white finishes, the Analog+ is a fully automatic record player with an Audio-Technica AT3600L cartridge and the ability to play both 7-inch and 12-inch records at 33 or 45rpm.There's both Bluetooth 5.3 and aux output. Everything is controllable via the included remote. It's a simple design with little visual clutter; all the controls are mounted on the front where there's also a small display to show you track progress and mode selection. But while it's simple, it's also very unusual, due to that top-loading CD mechanism in the center of the turntable. The CD player works with normal CDs, of course, but it also plays audio and data CD-R and CD-RW discs. It'll play WAV, MP3 and WMA files at up to 16-bit/44.1kHz, as well as 48kHz for WAV files. It's very odd, and to the best of my knowledge it's the first of its kind (Mixx certainly claims as much): there have been plenty of combined LP/CD players from all kinds of firms, but they have the CD transport as a more obviously separate mechanism to the turntable.Whether this is inspired or insanity will emerge when the reviews come in, but you can't deny Mixx's ability to think differently here. The Analog+ is available now for £299 (about $400 / AU$605).* I do wonder: what combinations were tried before they ended up with that one?Follow TechRadar on Google News and add us as a preferred source to get our expert news, reviews, and opinion in your feeds.
