With Nintendo's April 2 Direct showcase over and done, we now know more about the Switch 2 than ever before, including its release date (June 5) and price ($450!). We're also keeping a close eye on how the recently-announced tariffs in the United States are affecting Nintendo's launch plans — the company has already paused pre-orders in the US that were set to take place on April 9.

Thanks to Nintendo's January 16 teaser trailer, we've long known what the Switch 2 will look like, and that it will arrive in 2025 — over eight years after its predecessor. The Nintendo Switch 2 looks very similar to the original system, albeit with a larger display, magnetic Joy-Cons and a sleeker design. The company also reaffirmed that the upcoming console will be backwards compatible with Switch games.

Looking to catch up on everything we know about the Switch 2? Read on.

What are the key new features of the Nintendo Switch 2?

    Display and dock

The Nintendo Switch 2 has a 1080p 7.9-inch display with a 120Hz refresh and HDR compatibility. It also supports up to 4K output at 120Hz (with variable refresh rates) when docked.

    Joy-Con and Pro Controller

The new Joy-Con 2 for Nintendo Switch 2 attaches magnetically with a button to release them. They have larger SL and SR buttons (the ones hidden when the Joy-Con are attached) to make playing multiplayer games on individual Joy-Cons more feasible. These buttons are also made of steel and attach to the Switch 2's magnets.

The analog sticks are no longer tiny nubs, and are closer in size to the ones you might find on a PS5 or Xbox controller. However, they do not have Hall effect sensors, the use of which can minimize the risk of the "stick drift" issue that plagued the original Joy-Cons.

The Joy-Con 2 have what Nintendo is calling “HD Rumble 2” built in, which seems to be a refinement of the original (and still very good) vibration function. Finally, each Joy-Con 2 has an optical sensor that allows you to use it as a mouse, and a C button, which we’ll get to in a minute.

    Nintendo

The new Pro Controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 comes with everything you’d expect based on the refreshed Joy-Con 2: Namely HD Rumble 2 and the C button. There are also remappable GL/GR buttons around the back and a standard audio jack for connecting a headset.

Both options come with Amiibo support built in. The Switch 2 comes with two Joy-Con 2, as you’d expect, and additional pairs are priced at $90. The Pro Controller will cost $80.

The C button stands for “chat”

The new C button is a dedicated way to enter a chat session with friends. As well as the standard features you’d expect from voice chat, Nintendo has built a Discord-like video-sharing feature, which lets you show your gameplay to others and see other people’s screens while you’re playing.

The GameChat function works with a mic built into the console, though headsets are also supported. Nintendo will also sell a $50 camera that plugs into the USB-C port on the top of the console, which will allow you to stream your face along with your game.

    Nintendo

    GameCube support

The Switch 2 will work with GameCube games via the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. The three titles available at launch will be F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Soul Calibur II.

    Improved specs

Perhaps the biggest feature, though, is one you can’t see: The Switch 2 has an all-new processor and GPU and significantly more storage (256GB vs 64GB in the Switch OLED), along with support for faster and more capacious microSD cards. This will obviously lead to better first-party games and upgraded Switch experiences, but more importantly it will mean multi-platform games that had to skip the original, underpowered Switch will be able to be ported over. With games like Cyberpunk 2077 coming to the Switch 2 at launch, it seems like far more ports will be feasible than on the original console.

Another major improvement comes in the form of networking — the Switch 2 supports Wi-Fi 6, which will improve the original's often glacial download speeds. Similarly, the new dock sports an Ethernet port for a rock-solid connection.

    What's it like to play?

Nintendo gave the press a chance to check out the Switch 2 and a few of the games it highlighted. You can read our impressions of Mario Kart World as well as more general thoughts on how the Switch 2 feels in person. Right off the bat, Mario Kart World feels like an outstanding launch title, with more depth and better visuals than we've ever seen from a Mario Kart game. The core formula is intact, but there are a lot of new features and play styles to dig into.

As for the Switch 2 hardware, it feels like a major step forward from the original Switch — it has grown up a lot and feels far more polished and refined. And while it may not have an OLED screen, the 7.9-inch LED display Nintendo did use is outstanding.

How much will the Nintendo Switch 2 cost?

The Nintendo Switch 2 will be available for $450 standalone, or for $500 with a bundled digital copy of the new Mario Kart game, Mario Kart World. That’s significantly more expensive than the original Switch, which launched at $300, and has remained at that price ever since. It’s also more expensive than the entry-level current-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft.

The comparison looks a little better up against Valve’s Steam Deck, which costs $400 for the LCD model or $550 for the basic OLED model. The Steam Deck is more affordable than most PC handhelds.

When will the Nintendo Switch 2 come out?

    June 5, 2025.

When do pre-orders open for Nintendo Switch 2?

Pre-orders were originally set to begin on April 9, but on April 4 Nintendo announced it was suspending pre-order plans in the US "indefinitely." However, it says that the release date is unchanged.

How long will the Switch 2's battery last?

Nintendo says that the Switch 2 will last between 2 and 6.5 hours on a single charge. This is similar to the original Switch, which was rated for 2.5-6.5 hours, though later revisions upped that figure significantly. The company cautions that "this time is an estimate ... battery life will depend on the games you play and usage conditions."

When can I try the Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo is planning a worldwide roadshow to let gamers go hands-on with the console. These events started in New York and Paris on April 4-6, with others taking place throughout the following two months.

Ticket registration for many of the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events has closed, but waitlists are available. However, given that Nintendo is taking a first come, first served approach, your chances of attending the roadshow if you don't already have a ticket (or unless you signed up for the waitlist immediately) seem very small at this point.

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 backwards compatible?

Nintendo confirmed in November 2024 that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible. It will also feature access to Nintendo Online, so users will be able to play all of those old retro titles.

In the initial Nintendo Switch 2 press release, Nintendo reiterated that physical and digital Switch games will work on the new system. However, it noted that "certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2." We now have more information on which games are working thanks to a guide Nintendo put together.

Nintendo's software compatibility chart on April 2, 2025.Nintendo

As of April 1, the vast majority of Switch 2 games are marked as compatible, but many popular games are said to have some issues. Nintendo has marked most of these as “under investigation,” suggesting a fix may be on the way in time for launch. Nintendo says it is manually testing every Switch game for compatibility.

Only one title is marked as incompatible: Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. This was part of Nintendo’s Labo range of games that worked with Cardboard accessories, and is incompatible as the Switch 2 doesn’t physically fit in the VR headset.

Will old games be enhanced in any way?

The original Switch has, to put it mildly, struggled to run some of the late-generation software that's come down the pike. Could these games be enhanced to take advantage of the increased horsepower of the Switch 2? That’s unclear. In an “Ask the Developer” page on its site, Nintendo says that old games are working through a real-time translation system, which sounds similar to how Rosetta allows modern Macs to run old software. With that said, the new and old Switch are much closer in hardware than that.

In the same developer interview, it’s said that in its testing of old games for compatibility, there were some occasions “where loading times became faster, or game performance became more stable,” but we don’t have any detail beyond that.

As well as backward compatibility, Nintendo is also offering up premium "Switch 2 Edition" upgrades for a select few games. These have improved resolutions and frame rates, and (in some titles) some bonus features and content. What exactly that means will vary, but Nintendo did confirm that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will have 4K/60 fps and 1080p/120 fps options on the Switch 2.

Games confirmed to have a Switch 2 Edition to date include:

    Super Mario Party Jamboree

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

    Kirby and the Forgotten Land

    Pokémon Legends: Z-A

    Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

In the case of the two mainline Zelda games, those upgrades will be included with a Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership or cost $10 each. Upgrades for the other games are also paid, but Nintendo has not said how much those will cost.

What will the cartridges taste like?

You may remember that the original Switch cartridges taste absolutely awful. This was on purpose, to discourage folks from putting the games in their mouth.

Similarly, the Switch 2 carts are also said to taste terrible, in large part to stop children or pets from accidentally ingesting them. It is not yet clear what substance Nintendo has coated the Switch 2 cartridges in to make them taste foul, but Nintendo's Takuhiro Dohta advised against licking them all the same.

"We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," he told GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."

    What are the launch games?

We expect this list to change substantially over the coming weeks and months, but the titles currently confirmed to be available on day one follow:

    Arcade Archives 2 Ridge Racer

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster

    Cyberpunk 2077

    Deltarune

    Fast Fusion

    Fortnite

    Hitman: World of Assassination

    Hogwarts Legacy

    Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess

    Mario Kart World

    Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour

    Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S

    Split Fiction

    Street Fighter 6

    Survival Kids

    Yakuza 0: Director's Cut

The best rugged smartphones often focus on strength and battery life, but in recent years, they’ve started to include features such as portable projectors and even dual displays. The Ulefone Armor 30 Pro is a dual-screen rugged device featuring a 6.95-inch FHD+ main display with a 120Hz refresh rate. On the rear, it sports a 3.4-inch secondary screen with a 960x412 resolution, protected by Gorilla Glass. While the displays can’t be operated independently, both run on Android, and the rear screen allows users to take selfies and video calls using the main camera system.

Big battery and a MediaTek processor

The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7050 chipset, paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. It supports 5G connectivity and AI-powered features. As with many rugged devices, it houses a large 12,800mAh battery that promises extended usage. The rugged smartphone market is evolving, with many brands now integrating large batteries and even portable projectors into their devices.Chinese brand 8849 is known for such devices, having previously released models like the 8499 Tank 2 Pro and Tank 3 Pro.The company has now announced the 8849 Tank 4, a business smartphone that features a 100-lumen 720p DLP projector. It supports laser-assisted auto-focus up to 4 meters, micro-laser ranging, night vision camera, and an RGB camping light.

Projector phones are carving a niche

The 8849 Tank 4 sports a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1200 x 2650 and a 120Hz refresh rate. Measuring 174.3 x 85.4 x 23.9 mm and weighing 538g, it is only slightly smaller than the best rugged tablets on the market. This phone is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chip, paired with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of internal storage, expandable via TF card.It houses an 11,600mAh battery, which is about half the capacity of the Tank 3 Pro, but still large for daily use. While the Nintendo Switch 2 had its splashy debut last week, including details about the hardware and launch games, there's still lots about the console that Nintendo has yet to clear up. For instance, the company hasn't gone into specifics about the CPU and GPU that are powering the Switch 2, other than to touch on the performance enhancements that they offer over the Switch (NVIDIA separately confirmed that the Switch 2 uses its Deep Learning Super Sampling tech).

However, since last Wednesday's blockbuster Direct, Nintendo has touched on some new Switch 2 details in interviews with the press. For one thing, Nate Bihldorff, Senior Vice President of Product Development & Publishing at Nintendo of America, told Nintendo Life that the console's Joy-Con 2 controllers do not use Hall effect tech. "The Joy-Con 2's controllers have been designed from the ground up," Bihldorff said. "They're not Hall effect sticks, but they feel really good."

Switch 2 producer Kouichi Kawamoto separately said that the Joy-Con 2 joysticks "are quieter and don’t make noise, even when they’re moved quickly to the edge." The company is referring to them as "smooth-gliding sticks."

Engadget has asked Nintendo why the company opted not to use Hall effect tech in the Joy-Con 2. We've also asked whether the Switch 2 Pro Controller foregoes Hall effect sensors as well.

This technology is becoming increasingly common in the thumbsticks of third-party gamepads, but Nintendo has yet to implement it in its own joysticks (nor have Sony or Microsoft, for that matter). The idea behind Hall effect sensors is that they reduce the likelihood of stick drift. This problem was so pervasive on the original Switch's Joy-Cons that Nintendo offered free, unlimited repairs for stick drift in Europe. So it's not clear why Nintendo would opt out of having Hall effect sensors in the Joy-Con 2 to help mitigate such problems.

A fun fact if you haven't heard of Hall effect controllers before: Sega used them in the Sega Saturn 3D controller and the Dreamcast controller decades ago. It's definitely not new technology, but it's definitely getting more popular and widely used lately, despite Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony not adopting it yet.

Meanwhile, Nintendo has confirmed US pricing for a few Switch 2 experiences. The company told IGN that the upgrades for two The Legend of Zelda games — Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom — cost $10 each for those who already own either game. However, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers get access to the upgrades at no extra cost.

The Switch 2 upgrades include visual fidelity and framerate enhancements, along with the inclusion of HDR support and faster loading times. You'll also be able to use the Switch mobile app as a Sheikah Slate of sorts, helping you to find hidden items with voiced directions.

In addition, Nintendo has revealed that Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, which seems like a tech demo that will take you through all the features of the console, will cost $10. As for why Nintendo is charging 10 bucks for this as opposed to offering it for free (like Valve did with the fun Steam Deck tech demo, Aperture Desk Job, or Sony did with Astro's Playroom on PS5), Nintendo of America's Vice President of Product and Player Experience Bill Trinen had this to say to IGN:

For some people, I think there are people who are particularly interested in the tech and the specs of the system and things like that, for them I think it's going to be a great product. It's really for people that want more information about the system rather than necessarily a quick intro to everything it does. And for that reason and just the amount of care and work that the team put into it, I think it was decided that, 'Yeah, this feels like $9.99 is not an exorbitant price. It feels like a good value for what you're getting out of the product.'

For more on what Nintendo is looking forward to in the coming months, CNBC published a wide-ranging interview with Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser this week where they get into the effect of the recently-introduced tariffs on the Switch 2 among other things.

The US Department of Justice has disbanded its unit focused on prosecuting cryptocurrency scams. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the end of the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team in a memo sent on Monday, Reuters reported.

When the NCET launched, its focus was prosecuting cryptocurrency used in money laundering, fraud and theft. In recent years, the Department of Justice secured several high-profile wins in cases involving Binance, Tornado Cash and Bitfinex. However, the dissolution of NCET marks the latest government move to implement the current administration's crypto-friendly attitude.

Shortly after taking office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at encouraging the creation of blockchain networks. Blanche cited this as his rationale, and ordered the department's cryptocurrency efforts to focus on "individuals who victimize digital asset investors, or those who use digital assets in furtherance of criminal offenses such as terrorism, narcotics and human trafficking, organized crime, hacking, and cartel and gang financing." Any investigations that run counter to this agenda "should be closed."

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has also been walking back its regulation of cryptocurrency, such as ending an enforcement case against Coinbase. However, cryptocurrency remains a risky endeavor, with theft still rampant at the individual and national levels. Additionally, the Trump family already has a vested interest in encouraging crypto operations, claiming a majority of revenue from World Liberty Financial's token sales. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/cybersecurity/doj-to-disband-its-cryptocurrency-enforcement-unit-200347077.html?src=rss

Folks in the UK may be able to pre-order a Nintendo Switch 2 now, but Americans are still waiting for their time to shine. Switch 2 pre-orders in the US remain indefinitely delayed, despite Nintendo originally announcing an April 9 pre-order date. In response to new tariffs announced by President Donald Trump, Nintendo delayed Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S.

According a statement Nintendo provided to Engadget: "Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged."

As part of its most recent Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo has previously announced the April 9 pre-order date for North America, along with the June 5 date for wider availability. The starting price was to be $450, but it's unclear if that will change now in response to the proposed tariffs. Participating retailers will also be selling the Switch 2 when it eventually makes its way to the U.S. We expect those to include Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart and others.

There's some fine-print attached to pre-ordering directly from Nintendo. According to the pre-order page on Nintendo's site, you must be 18 years or older, sign in with your Nintendo account and register your interest in pre-ordering. Then, you'll be sent an invitation email when it's time to play your pre-order, and the invitation will be valid for 72 hours. And then there's this bit of info: "Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025."

That seems to mean those who have paid for Switch Online in the recent past and those who have spent a good amount of time playing Switch games as of late will get first pick at buying a Switch 2. There's no telling if these same restrictions will apply if you want to pre-order from third-party retailers.

We knew from the teaser trailer for the Switch 2 that Nintendo's new hardware would be bigger and would have a new approach to the detachable Joy-Cons. The new Joy-Con 2 have a new C button, mouse controls and a built in gyroscope for tilt control. The console has a built-in mic to support a new feature called Game Chat that will let you communicate with friends in-game. The device is indeed a bit larger, with a 7.9-inch LCD screen that supports a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR and a 1080p resolution.

When docked, you'll be able to play at up to 4K on your TV, and Nintendo says it improved the consoles internal speakers as well. The new dock also has a built-in fan to keep the console cool and help maintain performance during long play sessions. The Switch 2 has dual USB-C ports for charging, and the base storage amount has increased to 256GB. The Switch 2's storage can be expanded like the previous model, but it will only work with newer microSD Express cards.

The Switch 2 has a number of accessories that you'll be able to purchase separately as well, including the new Switch 2 camera for $50, a new Switch 2 Pro controller for $80, an extra pair of Joy-Con 2 controllers for $90, a Joy-Con 2 charging grip for $35 and more. However, considering the new question of tariffs, it's unclear if those accessory prices will change before customers can actually order the gear.

Razer laptops are now among the latest collateral damage of President Donald Trump's tariffs. Days after Nintendo paused Switch 2 pre-orders, The Verge reported that Razer has paused direct sales of devices like the Blade 16 gaming laptop in the US.

The Blade 16's product page, which recently included a pre-order link, now only offers a measly "Notify me" button. In addition, its configurator page, which allowed you to choose a graphics card, processor and other specs as recently as a few days ago, now draws a 404 error. You can still pre-order it in Europe and other regions.

Razer's laptop product page for US customers now only includes live order links for items like skins, docks and cooling pads.

    Razer

Although Razer hasn't publicly linked the pause to Trump's tariffs, it isn't hard to connect the two. The levies are scheduled to kick in at 12:01AM ET tonight, dramatically affecting companies that build products in or source parts from countries like China and Taiwan. Tariffs are a tax on imported foreign goods, and businesses often pass the higher cost to consumers. Economists have estimated that consumers will pay an extra $3,800 annually due to Trump's policy — and that was before Trump announced additional tariffs on China, totaling a staggering 104 percent.

Razer's pause follows the halting of Switch 2 US pre-orders as Nintendo gauges the situation and ponders its next move. Similarly, Framework stopped selling some of its laptops in the US, and Reuters reported on Tuesday that memory chipmaker Micron plans to add a surcharge to some products. Expect the "Liberation Day" hits to keep coming as tonight's official beginning of the biggest US tax hike since 1968 approaches. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/pc/razer-laptops-are-the-latest-trump-tariff-casualty-204844654.html?src=rss

OPHANIM combines everyday tech with high-end scientific imaging capabilityAntimatter detection is now possible using repurposed smartphone camera techGigapixel device could reveal fine details of particle collisions instantly

At CERN’s Antimatter Factory, the AEgIS collaboration is exploring a novel approach to detecting one of nature’s rarest phenomena: antiproton annihilation.eeNews reports the team, led by Professor Christoph Hugenschmidt from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), has developed an experimental detector using sensors originally designed for mobile phone cameras.Instead of creating a new sensor system from scratch, the researchers repurposed sixty 64-megapixel mobile camera sensors to form a 3.84-gigapixel array called OPHANIM, short for Optical Photon and Antimatter Imager. This composite detector can observe where antiprotons collide with matter, annihilating in a flash of energy.

From mobile phones to antimatter research

“For AEgIS to work, we need a detector with incredibly high spatial resolution, and mobile camera sensors have pixels smaller than 1 micrometer,” explains Francesco Guatieri, Principal Investigator at TUM.To adapt the sensors for scientific use, the team had to employ intensive micro-engineering to remove the camera sensors of layers meant for mobile phone electronics.“We had to strip away the first layers of the sensors, which are made to deal with the advanced integrated electronics of mobile phones,” says Guatieri. This process enabled the sensors to directly capture the light patterns associated with annihilation events.Despite their origins, the mobile sensors do not compromise performance. In fact, the new detector offers a 35-fold improvement in real-time resolution over earlier methods.“Previously, photographic plates were the only option, but they lacked real-time capabilities,” Guatieri adds.“Our solution, demonstrated for antiprotons and directly applicable to antihydrogen, combines photographic-plate-level resolution, real-time diagnostics, self-calibration and a good particle collection surface, all in one device.”The OPHANIM detector allows researchers to observe annihilation events in real time with a resolution of about 0.6 micrometres, fine enough to distinguish between different particles created during the process."This is a game-changing technology for the observation of the tiny shifts due to gravity in an antihydrogen beam travelling horizontally, and it can also find broader applications in experiments where high position resolution is crucial, or to develop high-resolution trackers," says AEgIS spokesperson Dr. Ruggero Caravita."This extraordinary resolution enables us also to distinguish between different annihilation fragments, paving the way for new research on low-energy antiparticle annihilation in materials."The implications of this work extend beyond antimatter research. OPHANIM’s ability to track particles with such precision could benefit a wide range of experiments, all while offering a low-cost model built from existing consumer technology.

The Guardian reported that the UK's Ministry of Justice has been developing an algorithm designed to identify people who could become killers. Initially dubbed the "homicide prediction project," this tool used data from UK police forces, possibly including victims and witnesses as well as suspects.

Civil liberty watchdog Statewatch discovered the program through Freedom of Information Act requests. Based on the documents acquired by the group, Statewatch claimed that the program developed its prediction tool based on police data about between 100,000 and 500,000 people. Different categories of information shared with the Ministry of Justice appeared to also cover sensitive topics such as mental health, addiction, suicide and disability.

"Time and again, research shows that algorithmic systems for ‘predicting’ crime are inherently flawed," Statewatch researcher Sofia Lyall said. "This latest model, which uses data from our institutionally racist police and Home Office, will reinforce and magnify the structural discrimination underpinning the criminal legal system."

"This project is being conducted for research purposes only. It has been designed using existing data held by HM Prison and Probation Service and police forces on convicted offenders to help us better understand the risk of people on probation going on to commit serious violence. A report will be published in due course," a representative from the MOJ told The Guardian.

Law enforcement has long had a questionable relationship with AI tools. From AI being used to create police reports (bad idea) to misusing programs like ShotSpotter (another bad idea) to adopting tech that poses privacy threats to citizens (also a bad idea), history is not on the side of these being well-implemented technologies. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/uk-is-going-full-minority-report-with-murder-prediction-research-214254968.html?src=rss

Social media platform Instagram has been around since 2010 yet it still doesn't have a dedicated iPad app. In fact, the last we heard about the network's interest in tablets was back in 2022, when Insta head Adam Mosseri said there simply weren't enough iPad users to merit developing a native app. A baffling standpoint, but one that could finally be changing.

A current employee of the service spoke anonymously to The Information recently and said that in this, the year 2025, Instagram is at last working on an iPad app. As of now, the only way to use Instagram on an iPad is a zoomed-in version of the company's iPhone app. Most businesses realized a decade ago that repurposing a phone app isn't a great user experience since the aspect ratio is so different on a tablet. That's particularly noticeable when your service is all about photo and video content.

The sudden interest in iPad may be part of Instagram's broader efforts to fight for social media dominance as the popular video platform TikTok faces a potential ban in the US. The Information also reported that Instagram recently hosted an early preview of an upcoming Edits app for video-editing, which would compete with CapCut, a rival service also owned by ByteDance and at risk of falling within the TikTok ban.

Mosseri has also spoken about plans to improve Instagram's capabilities in content search. "You can imagine, whatever you use Instagram for, it’d be great to be able to find ‘that’ more easily," he said on an episode of the Build Your Tribe podcast. "But also for creators … it should allow content to resurface so that you don’t get all the value in those first 24 or 48 hours."This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/social-media/the-year-is-2025-and-instagram-is-reportedly-working-on-an-ipad-app-223942933.html?src=rss

This new Bloomin8 E-Ink Canvas frame comes in several sizes and lasts for a year on a chargeYou could easily place one on your wall and have it rotate through shared images via an app upload or through an SD cardThese screens also fit into a popular IKEA frame

Digital photo frames are eye-catching pieces of technology for the home, but they come with challenges like power cables and the need for constant connection to the cloud. What if you could place digital images throughout your home – on every wall – and none of them needed wires or full-time internet connectivity? That would be the new Bloomin8 E-Ink Canvas from Arpobot.Unveiled in a Kickstarter program this week, the new full-color E-Ink displays are designed to fit inside some standard art and photography frames, including the RÖDALM series from IKEA.

Based on E-Ink's Spectra6 technology, the Bloomin8 rechargeable displays support full color and 200ppi of resolution. More importantly, they can hold an image indefinitely, which means you only need power to change the display image. A Bloomin8 E-Ink Canvas can operate, according to Arpobot, for up to a year on charge. It's a rare consumer use for the all-color Spectra6 panel, which E-Ink has traditionally pitched for commercial use (think advertising displays). But it's certainly not the only one.Bloomin8 will compete with the PocketBook InkPoster we saw at CES 2025. It also uses E-Ink Spectra6 technology, and its accompanying app offers a vast library of images. When we wrote about it in January, there was no mention of AI image generation. We also don't know about their ability to support IKEA frames.

    Load and lock-in

Images can be sideloaded through the Bloomin8's integrated SD slot, which I know is a rather retro function. In the years before connected devices, many of the original photo frames relied on SD cards for their photo libraries. However, Bloomin8 also accepts image updates from its dedicated app on your smartphone (iOS or Android).Even so, since it's not connected to the cloud and doesn't need the Internet for its photos, the Bloomin8 E-Ink Canvas does not draw power while displaying an image. That's the benefit of E-Ink; once the image is drawn, it stays visible on the display even without additional power.

    Image 1 of 4(Image credit: Arpobot)Image 2 of 4(Image credit: Arpobot)Image 3 of 4(Image credit: Arpobot)Image 4 of 4(Image credit: Arpobot)

The matte images we've seen thus far look quite good, though it does take a few moments for the E-Ink to fully resolve and saturate the image. It's also worth remembering that E-Ink is a reflective technology and, like a painting or a photo, is only illuminated if you cast light on it. We don't yet know how well the imagery will hold up in all lighting situations. If you don't have any art or photos you want to use or have something completely else in mind, the Bloomin8 app can generate AI imagery that you can upload to one of the canvases. The Bloomin8 panels come in three sizes: 7.3 inches ($167), 133 inches ($349), and 28.5 inches ($999), which means you have many options for mixing up your living room photo collage wall. These are all Kickstarter prices, and retail will be more expensive.

Google surprised me when I first experimented with its NotebookLM AI tool. The AI-powered research assistant offers a relatively intuitive and focused setup to make custom guides on any topic you can name. It's now poised to become even more accessible with a mobile app soon. The app should be exciting for anyone who works with large volumes of information or just has an idiosyncratic learning style. NotebookLM basically takes any text, including Google Docs, PDFs, and even YouTube videos that have a transcript, unifies it, and recontextualizes the result as a summary, study guide, or other presentation. As good as NotebookLM's summarization and ability to synthesize notes are, its most memorable aspect is the Audio Overviews it can create. Audio Overviews basically turns all that information you uploaded into a podcast hosted by two AI characters. The synthetic conversation between the two AI hosts can actually sound like people who have read what you uploaded and want to discuss it.At first, I thought it was a gimmick, but it's really just a reformatting of information like any other. If you’ve ever felt like you'd absorb details from books and other text better in a BBC panel discussion, it's a great option. It's also the most obvious reason to anticipate the NotebookLM mobile app. It’s perfect for multitaskers, commuters, and anyone whose eyes are too tired to stare at another screen. I’ve used it to refresh myself on interview transcripts before writing articles and just as a fun way to explain a confusing topic. When the app hits smartphones, the ability to do this on the go may be huge for anyone who wants to absorb complex information but doesn’t always have the time or focus to read it.

    Pocket NotebookLM

Of course, Audio Overview is just one part of what makes NotebookLM worth your attention. Unlike many AI assistants, which often operate in a vacuum or require you to explain everything from scratch, NotebookLM has context from the content you share specifically. Its abilities are many, from basic summaries and the ability to answer questions to creating timelines, brainstorming new ideas built on the information, and instant cross-references.That's useful on a computer. As a mobile app, there's a lot more opportunity to exploit NotebookLM's tools. Sure, you'll have needed to upload the information, but if it's there, you can instantly pull up that quote you can't quite remember or fact about the person you're about to meet.Of course, it’s not perfect. NotebookLM is only as smart as the information you give it. If your sources are a mess, it won’t magically fill in the blanks. It also can't replace real research. Sometimes, it misses nuance or answers too confidently when the source it pulls from is hedging. But the fact that it’s transparent about the answers helps compensate. And, at least it will always offer something to listen to on your next long commute.

I always enjoy a chance to mess with AI video generators. Even when they're terrible, they can be entertaining, and when they pull it off, they can be amazing. So, I was keen to play with Runway's new Gen-4 model. The company boasted that the Gen-4 (and its smaller, faster sibling model, Gen-4 Turbo) can outperform the earlier Gen-3 model in quality and consistency. Gen-4 supposedly nails the idea that characters can and should look like themselves between scenes, along with more fluid motion and improved environmental physics. It’s also supposed to be remarkably good at following directions. You give it a visual reference and some descriptive text, and it produces a video that resembles what you imagined. In fact, it sounded a lot like how OpenAI promotes its own AI video creator, Sora.Though the videos Sora makes are usually gorgeous, they are also sometimes unreliable in quality. One scene might be perfect, and the next might have characters floating like ghosts or doors leading to nowhere.

    Magic movie

Runway Gen-4 pitched itself as video magic, so I decided to test it with that in mind and see if I could make videos telling the story of a wizard. I cooked up a few ideas for a little fantasy trilogy starring a wandering wizard. I wanted the wizard to meet an elf princess and then chase her through magic portals. Then, when he encounters her again, she's disguised as a magical animal, and he transforms her back into a princess. The goal wasn’t to create a blockbuster. I just wanted to see how far Gen-4 could stretch with minimal input. Not having any photos of real wizards, I took advantage of the newly upgraded ChatGPT image generator to create convincing still images. Sora may not be blowing up Hollywood, but I can't deny the quality of some of the pictures produced by ChatGPT. I made the first video, then used Runway's option to "fix" a seed so that the characters would look consistent in the videos. I pieced the three videos into a single film below with a short break between each.

    AI Cinema

You can see it's not perfect. There are some odd object movements, and the consistent looks aren't perfect. Some background elements shimmered oddly, and I wouldn’t put these clips on a theater screen just yet. However, the actual movement, expression, and emotion of the characters felt surprisingly real. And, I liked the iteration options, which didn't overwhelm me with too many manual options but also gave me enough control so that it felt like I was actively involved in the creation and not just pressing a button and praying for coherence. Now, will it take down Sora and OpenAI's many professional filmmaker partners? No, certainly not right now. But I'd probably at least experiment with it if I were an amateur filmmaker who wanted a relatively cheap way to see what some of my ideas could look like. At least, before spending a ton of money on the people needed to actually make movies look and feel as powerful as my vision for a film. And if I grew comfortable enough with it and good enough at using and manipulating the AI to get what I wanted from it every time, I might not even think about using Sora. You don't need to be a wizard to see that's the spell Runway is hoping to cast on its potential user base.

The debate over the future of AI continues to rage, with battle lines being drawn between Big Tech’s domination of AI development and grassroots, community-driven innovation – a situation that will set the tone for how the industry develops in the years ahead. In its recent history, AI has been increasingly dominated by a handful of tech giants, creating what many believe is a monoculture where just a few major players control access and progress. However, new government policies and open source initiatives could help restore balance in the industry. The significance of open-source AI gained global attention in January during the ‘DeepSeek tech crash.’ While headlines focused on falling AI stock prices, the other big story was the immense potential of freely available AI models that can be used, modified and distributed without restrictions. So, how might this play out, and what kind of AI ecosystem should the industry aim for to ensure the technology delivers for everyone?

Open source – a route to ethical AI innovation

Few would argue with the notion that open source and AI are natural partners. Both thrive on collaboration and shared innovation, allowing researchers and developers to collectively accelerate the pace of innovation while also ensuring broader access to emerging technologies.Open source principles will be key to AI's future health, from collaborative improvements and knowledge pooling to transparency. Deeper integration on an industry-wide basis can create the conditions required for fairer, more ethical innovation. In doing so, the AI ecosystem can avoid problems associated with the vendor lock-in, limited transparency and restricted access to foundational models associated with uncompetitive technology markets. On the other hand, if AI development remains concentrated within relatively few dominant players, users will undoubtedly face higher costs. They will be offered fewer opportunities to tailor solutions to their specific needs. This situation will only intensify as more AI is integrated into IT infrastructure. That’s why finding a sustainable path for open source is crucial, especially as organizations today face massive internal and external pressure to become AI-powered. In an open source environment, AI tools will give organizations the power to deploy and manage workloads at the enterprise scale. In particular, they will allow businesses to select and integrate their preferred large language models (LLMs) while fully owning their data and infrastructure. The rise of open source AI also means organizations can leverage the surge in new infrastructure software innovation to fuel and enable digital transformation. These emerging technologies create new levels of freedom and flexibility. As organizations will embrace these qualities, they drive further demand for reliable, secure and enterprise-ready solutions. In this context, AI/open source-led innovation becomes a virtuous circle. The UK is the third-largest AI market in the world and the UK Government has recently shared the AI Opportunity Action Plan to boost economic growth and improve people’s everyday life. The impact of open source across AI development and implementation is already impressive. A recent study by McKinsey found that open source AI is widely adopted by 63% of organizations overall and 72% in tech, particularly by organizations leveraging AI for competitive advantage (40% more likely to use it), with key benefits including lower costs (60%).However, a democratic approach to AI , fostering open source-led innovation, will be essential for the success of a thriving AI ecosystem. The advancement of open technology with openness and choice for customers will be a corner-stone for creating resilient digital infrastructures

    The role of regulation

Looking more closely at the growing role of open source AI models, however, progress is not simply a matter of accessibility or ideology; the industry also needs effective regulatory guardrails. While AI governance is still at a relatively early stage compared to other tech sectors, there are some clues as to the direction of travel. Last year, for example, the White House acknowledged the benefits of open source AI, such as fostering innovation and allowing a broader range of actors to examine and improve models. To build on this sentiment, the ideal scenario would be to commit to AI regulations that ensure AI can be accessed, used, changed and shared transparently by anyone. Now more than ever, enterprises require sovereignty, control and the ability to customize AI implementations – all of which are best ensured through open source.Additionally, community-governed development is the best way to reduce the possibility of flaws, drive innovation and leverage AI’s full potential. The Linux Foundation project AI & Data for example fosters collaboration and provides trusted AI & Data infrastructure, uniting developers, organizations, and users. With open source AI, customers also have full visibility into the software code and development process, increasing trust and bolstering AI, which is still a nascent technology. Community-based open standards can also address AI safety concerns, not least because engaging the community is one of the best ways to improve security protocols and resilience.Clearly, this is a highly complex and nuanced situation where competing interests and priorities will come under further scrutiny. For those interested in a future where AI innovation takes place in a fair and ethical environment, collaboration and open standards will be key.

A new leak suggests Nvidia's RTX 5060 Ti and non-Ti variant will stick with the previous gen's 128-bit memory busThis is contrary to other RTX 5000 series GPUs using higher memory busesThe rumored use of GDDR7 VRAM may be the biggest highlight over their predecessors

Nvidia isn't done with its RTX 5000 series GPU lineup yet, as its unannounced RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060 desktop cards are still on the horizon. However, a new leak has supposedly uncovered more of their specifications. As highlighted by VideoCardz, Nvidia's RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060 will use a 128-bit memory bus, the same as their predecessor, according to a leaked shipping description. This is different from the RTX 5070's 192-bit memory bus, along with the rest of the Blackwell GPU lineup, which is important for improving VRAM performance in GPUs.While this may seem disappointing at first glance, the leaked specifications suggest both GPUs will use GDDR7 memory: the RTX 5060 reportedly has an 8GB VRAM GDDR7 capacity, while its Ti counterpart will have both 16GB and 8GB GDDR7 options. As VideoCardz hints, this could come in handy as a potential boost with much higher speeds and bandwidth over their predecessors, which use GDDR6 instead. It's worth taking this with a grain of salt: we know that the RTX 5060 will be unveiled eventually, but there's no confirmation yet on Team Green's end, so it's worth waiting for official specs to come to light.Ultimately, these entry-level GPUs and their chances of success in the GPU market will likely depend on pricing. With availability, scalping, and inflation being Nvidia's main issues with its RTX 5000 series launch, the graphics giant may have a hard time convincing consumers to opt for its lineup if the GPUs prove difficult to obtain at retail price.

Regardless of how good or bad the new GPUs are, pricing will determine their fate...

It's a sad reality that PC gamers are facing with the GPU market currently in disarray - and with recent tariffs mixed in with scalping and high demand, I doubt it’ll end any time soon.Unfortunately, it means the RTX 5060 Ti and non-Ti GPUs will likely suffer the same fate (especially if they turn out to be great options for budget gamers). We've seen third-party cards from both Nvidia and AMD selling above MSRP at multiple retailers; if Team Green doesn't make a reference card for either of the upcoming GPUs, it could be much worse, as consumers will be left entirely at the mercy of retailers and Nvidia’s manufacturing partners.PC gaming can already be an expensive hobby, and all recent speculation points towards this getting worse: besides PC hardware, we now have game prices to worry about too, thanks to Nintendo's absurd $80 game pricing (no, I won't shut up about this).I really hope Nvidia can surprise consumers with these new cards, as it certainly needs a kickstart for good momentum. It's not just been inflation and pricing, but drivers and missing ROPs have haunted Team Green since the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launch. Let's just hope a new launch can get us excited again...

PowerColor has launched a new Radeon RX 9070 XT Red Devil Spectral White GPU at $899.99Its Hellhound model is available at $849.99Best Buy features even older RDNA 3 GPUs at high prices above their MSRP

If you thought the GPU market would get any better after recent pricing issues, think again: unfortunately, there's yet another huge price hike on, this time on an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT partner card.As reported by VideoCardz, PowerColor has launched an overclocked Radeon RX 9070 XT Red Devil Spectral White GPU, with a price point at $899.99 - which is a ridiculous $300.99 more than the card's $599 MSRP. This is featured alongside PowerColor's Hellhound variant on Micro Center, priced at $849.99.It's a similar move to another board partner of AMD's: I've previously highlighted the XFX Radeon RX 9070 XT on Best Buy, which was being sold for up to $939.99 at the time, and we're now seeing a similar pattern with PowerColor models. The same applies to older RDNA 3 GPUs, with prices above MSRP despite being more than two years old. While there are currently tariffs on imported goods in the US - which could make prices even more absurd in the near future - these price increases were happening long before Trump kicked off his tariff war. From the moment Nvidia's RTX 5000 series launched, price hikes across multiple retailers came into effect. It's also worth noting that AMD's Radeon RX 9070 series GPUs were originally being sold at retail price (at least during the launch), and now that's changed entirely within the span of just a few weeks. It can be argued that this issue stems from a lack of availability and a shortage of GPU dies (especially with such a high GPU demand from consumers, and the new hunger for silicon from the burgeoning AI industry), but this isn't the first time retailers and AIBs have raised prices to ridiculous amounts.

Is the GPU market on the verge of a major crash?

Since the 2020 pandemic, average prices for GPUs have soared immensely, with multiple PC gamers tempted to overspend - so this isn't exactly a new occurrence. This current state of the GPU market is quite literally the worst I've seen, as I've stated before, and with tariffs now involved, it could be the start of a graphics market crash. That's a big could be, though, as there is clearly still a large number of consumers willing to buy these inflated GPUs, as most are sold out across most retailers. Regardless, given how matters are now, I can only see prices continuously rising and leaving more and more PC gamers unable to purchase new hardware. The RTX 5080 is already expensive at its retail price ($999 / £939 / AU$2,019), and partner cards take this up to $1,500 (based on Best Buy listings). As great as the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 are, I'd argue that there are very few gamers who would be willing to spend these sorts of figures just for an enhanced experience with better performance.I'd hate to see it, but we could soon reach a point where consumers opt out of any GPU upgrades: with Nvidia and AMD's focus on AI now very clear, we could witness a slow and painful dwindle in priority for gaming GPUs for both Team Green and Team Red...

Nutribullet and McLaren have teamed up for a set of three themed blendersEach blender features McLaren's signature gray and papaya livery colorsThe original versions of all three received high scores from our reviewers

Nutribullet, maker of some of the world's best blenders, has teamed up with the McLaren Formula 1 team for a set of F1-themed soup and smoothie-makers. The collaboration might sound like a belated April Fools joke, but it's very real, and the three race-ready blenders are available to buy now direct from Nutribullet.According to Nutribullet, the three blenders are "infused with McLaren’s signature papaya aesthetic – blending speed, precision, and innovation from the racetrack to the kitchen."The trio include the Nutribullet x McLaren F1 Team Portable – a new version of the Nutribullet Portable Blender we reviewed last year. Our tester Victoria Woolaston praised its light weight, which makes it ideal for carrying to the office or gym, and its very reasonable price tag. Its battery life was also impressive, and she found it lasted around two weeks between charges in typical use.She did note that it struggled somewhat with particularly tough ingredients, and it was sometimes necessary to run two blending cycles to incorporate difficult vegetables into smoothies, but no more so than other single-serve blenders at this price point.

    Pulp position

Also on the starting grid is the Nutribullet x McLaren F1 Team Pro 900: a papaya and graphite-hued version of the more powerful Nutribullet 900. Our reviewer Emily Peck found that the 900 produced consistently good results, and noted that it's a particularly good pick for small kitchens."There's only one setting, but it offers you 50% more power than the original Nutribullet, with the speedy blade delivering super-smooth results," she said. Finally, there's the Nutribullet x McLaren F1 Team Ultra. The original Nutribullet Ultra earned four and a half out of five stars in our review, producing silky smoothies and nicely textured hummus with ease. It's also one of the quietest blenders we've tested to date. There's been a trend in kitchen appliances recently for subtle, natural shades like buttery yellow and leafy green, but if that's not your style then one of these blenders could add a welcome shock of color to your kitchen. You could even use one to whip up a quick papaya and coconut smoothie for refreshment during this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

When OpenAI made headlines with its ChatGPT launch in 2022, it was clear that its evolution into the workforce was only a matter of time. According to Sam Altman, technology is advancing so rapidly that we can expect this shift within the next few months. But is replacing humans with AI employees a genius business move, or akin to hiring unpredictable interns? While human employees come with additional costs such as training, sick leave, and salaries, AI workers bypass these expenses. Instead, they introduce their own unique challenges that can be just as disruptive for employers.

    Holidays vs. System Updates

Virtual workers don’t need to rest in the same way as humans, and it’s often seen as the biggest benefit of AI workers. AI doesn’t sleep and can work at all hours, unlike human employees who have set hours and need regular breaks. However, while AI never has the need for out of office replies, it does require plenty of maintenance and updates to perform. For virtual employees, system downtime is the AI equivalent of a holiday, while planned maintenance or unexpected outages can disrupt operations just like a human taking time off for appointments or illness. The promise of 24/7 availability isn't entirely true if there are issues in the infrastructure.According to a recent report by Splunk, unplanned downtime costs the world's largest 2,000 companies a combined $400 billion per year, averaging $200 million per company. From lost revenue, regulatory fines, and hidden costs like slower time to market and worsened brand reputations, downtime can be a very costly challenge. So, although AI doesn't need a time off to recharge, ensuring its performing as it should needs to be a top priority for any organization introducing AI employees. AI models need to be regularly updated to avoid deteriorating in accuracy, leading to outdated or incorrect outputs. The recent shift towards retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is an attempt to combat this, by enabling Large Language Models (LLMs) to source data from verified external sources, but it’s not an easy fix and still requires close monitoring.

    Sickness vs Hallucinations

An AI employee won’t call in sick, but they can suffer from bugs and hallucinations that can be equally as disruptive. An AI hallucination occurs when a model generates incorrect or nonsense outputs, and this happens more than you would think. For instance, in 2017, Microsoft's AI chatbot Tay had to be shut down after it began generating offensive tweets less than a day after its launch.Just like human immunity, different AI models vary in their robustness against bugs. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are all racing to reduce model hallucinations, but even top of the range models can still be unreliable at times. For organizations with AI employees, the priority should be treating these issues but also working to detect any potential future issues before they cause harm. Ongoing governance is therefore essential, in the same way as managing employee performance to identify any challenges or skills shortages.

    Monthly pay vs. Updates

It’s a common misconception that AI is a pay-once, use forever deal. The cost of deploying AI solutions isn't set by a wide-open market; it's influenced by major players like Sam Altman and Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai. As AI models evolve, it’s likely that businesses may need to invest further into costly updates or building entirely new systems to keep up with competitors. This ongoing investment could be the same as providing pay raises or professional development for human employees. For example, ChatGPT recently launched a business-tier solution, and companies are already integrating AI co-pilots into their workflows. These tools are often tied to evolving licensing fees, cloud computing costs, and retraining requirements which means the AI you implement today could be severely outdated in just two years, requiring additional investment to maintain the same level of efficiency.

    Training vs. Data input

In the same way that human employees need training to improve and develop in their role, LLMs need vast amounts of data to learn from to enhance performance. The more complex a model is, the more data it requires. For example, some models may need at least 10 million labelled items. It’s not just about the volume of data; the quality and relevance of this data are also crucial, as AI can only be as good as the data it is trained on. Poor data input means poor data output.Linking abstract knowledge to real-world examples, also known as “Grounding AI” is a way to improve the ability of AI models to produce better predictions and responses. To do this, many companies are turning to RAG as a way of enhancing AI accuracy, by allowing models to pull from verified external sources instead of relying purely on pre-trained data.Just like human development, training AI needs to be done regularly and consistently to get the best results. Especially as regulations around AI tighten and change, it’s crucial for companies to remain compliant with data protection laws, bias mitigation requirements, and industry-specific standards. Especially for businesses in highly regulated industries such as finance, firms using AI must align with regulations like the EU AI Act, ensuring models are transparent and accountable. This means regular audits, governance, and retraining.

    So, what’s the verdict?

The truth is, it's not about choosing whether AI or human employees are better for a business. Instead, the real power comes by harnessing both. Issues such as governance, training, hallucinations and updates can be just as time consuming and expensive for businesses as managing human talent. The value of AI is in enabling humans to take more time for the things that only they can do; deeper thinking, creativity and building authentic human connections – capabilities that AI simply cannot, no matter how much it continues to evolve and advance.Granted, implementing AI tools into business processes will free up time and improve efficiency, but that doesn’t mean that humans don’t still have a place. When the efficiency and intelligence of AI join forces with the creativity, empathy, and strategic thinking of humans, the possibilities are limitless. Together, they can drive innovation, boost productivity, and propel businesses towards long-term sustainable success.

Much of the time, the best “gaming headset” isn’t a headset at all. While many people look at gaming headsets as their own niche, they’re ultimately just headphones with a boom mic, some fancy branding and (usually) an inflated price tag attached. While the general quality of those headsets has improved over time, a good pair of traditional wired headphones — which, yes, still exist — still tend to deliver richer, more detailed sound. If you need to chat with friends, you can always hook them up to a dedicated microphone and achieve superior audio quality there as well. That said, it’s an increasingly wireless world, and we know that many people just want the convenience of a headset with a mic built in. So, after researching the market and testing dozens of contenders over the last few years, we’ve rounded up the best gaming headsets and headphones for gaming that we’ve tried. Each one should make your game time a little more enjoyable, whether you play on a PlayStation 5, Xbox, PC or Nintendo Switch.

    Other gaming headsets we've tested

    The PlayStation Pulse Elite.

    Jeff Dunn for Engadget

Note: This is a selection of noteworthy gaming headsets and headphones we’ve put through their paces, not a comprehensive list of everything we’ve ever tried.

PlayStation Pulse Elite (and Pulse Explore)

The PlayStation Pulse Elite is a reasonable alternative to the Turtle Beach Atlas Air for PS5 owners, as it allows you to change volume, swap between different EQ presets, adjust the game-to-chat mix and mute the mic right from the console’s native UI. It’s similar to the way AirPods integrate with iPhones. This pair also lets you connect to a second device over Bluetooth at the same time, and the planar magnetic drivers — a rarity for $150 headphones — do a decent job of reproducing smaller details. The sound profile as a whole is narrower and more uneven in the bass and treble than the Atlas Air, however, while the all-plastic design is comfortable but flimsy-feeling. It also doesn’t do much to block outside noise, despite being closed-back, and the control buttons are awkward to reach.

We also tested Sony's in-ear version of these headphones, the PlayStation Pulse Explore, but found it too uncomfortable to wear over extended sessions. That one is limited to roughly five hours of battery life, too.

    Astro A50 (Gen 5)

The Astro A50 (Gen 5) is effectively the same headset as the A50X, just without any HDMI ports on its base station. It costs $80 less, so it’s a worthy alternative to the Audeze Maxwell if you mainly play on one platform and want a superior microphone. But the ability to automatically switch between consoles is the thing that makes the A50X worth buying in the first place, so that convenience is still worth paying for if you game on multiple devices.

    The Corsair Virtuoso Pro.

Photo by Jeff Dunn / Engadget

    Corsair Virtuoso Pro

The Corsair Virtuoso Pro is another one of the few dedicated gaming headsets with an open-back design. It has a relatively dark sound with mostly underemphasized treble and elevated upper-bass, though the highs are clearer here than they are on the Astro A40, and it still delivers a wider soundstage than most gaming headsets. We preferred this signature over Astro’s pair with some games, though in others it felt less balanced. The Virtuoso Pro’s mic is decidedly less muffled than the A40’s but still sounds fairly thin, so it’s merely decent compared to the wider headset market. Its headband adjustment mechanism feels cheap, too, and you can’t detach the mic without swapping cables out entirely. Its round, breathable ear cups and manageable weight do make it easy to wear, though, and it comes with a sturdy travel case for protection. Ultimately, it’s a decent buy, but it’s hard to justify over the more featured and easier-sounding Atlas Air.

    HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless

The HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless can last well over 300 hours at moderate volumes, which is remarkable and by far the best of any wireless model we’ve tested. It’s light and not too snug on the head, and its powerful bass lends a real sense of excitement to in-game action. But it blunts more detail than the Atlas Air, Maxwell and A50 X, and its mic isn’t as good. Several users have also reported latency issues when using the headset with HyperX’s Ngenuity software, and there’s no Xbox, Bluetooth or wired audio support. Still, if battery life is paramount, you may be able to look past all of that.

    The HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless.

    Logitech G Pro X 2 Lightspeed

If the Audeze Maxwell is out of stock, the Logitech G Pro X 2 Lightspeed is another quality wireless headset worth considering. It sounds better than the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless, with satisfying but more controlled bass and more accurate mids, and it’s lighter on the head than the Maxwell. Logitech rates its battery life at 50 hours, but we found it to last much longer at moderate volumes. However, similar to the Astro A50 X, a dip in the treble makes it sound darker and more veiled than the Maxwell, and it doesn’t have any HDMI-switching tricks to fall back on. Its mic also sounds less natural than those of the Maxwell, A50 X and Cloud Alpha Wireless. Plus, while it can connect over a USB dongle, Bluetooth or a 3.5mm cable, it can’t pair to two devices at once like Audeze’s and Astro’s pairs. Our biggest issue is the price: Value-wise, it’s in something of a no man’s land at its MSRP of $250. It’s a fine choice if it dips below $200, though.

    Razer BlackShark V2 Pro

The wireless Razer BlackShark V2 Pro is tremendously comfortable and has a good mic, but its boomy sound is less refined and detailed than the Audeze Maxwell. As a closed-back headset, it also lacks the width of the Atlas Air. There’s no support for wired audio either.

    Logitech G535 Lightspeed

The Logitech G535 is an impressively light (0.52 pounds) and comfy wireless headset that’s often available for $100 or less. It has a relatively neutral sound signature: not flat, but not beholden to big, thumping bass. It can make details in the mids sound thin, and if anything it could use a little more sub-bass, but it’s an agreeable listen overall. However, its mic isn't especially full, and its 35-or-so-hour battery life is a significant drop from our top recommendations. It doesn’t work with Xbox’s wireless protocol or Bluetooth either, and it forces you to crank the volume to reach a listenable level. But if you don’t want to spend a ton on a wireless headset, it’s a fine value.

    SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7X

Xbox owners who want a more affordable wireless headset than the Audeze Maxwell could do worse than the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7X. It’s another bass-forward pair, and its mic is comparable to that of the Cloud Alpha Wireless. It offers multiple connectivity options, including Bluetooth and a 3.5mm cable. While it's marketed for Xbox, it can also connect to PCs and PS5s. Its 30-ish-hour battery life is well short of the Maxwell and Cloud Alpha Wireless, however, and its uneven treble can cause things like in-game dialogue to sound masked in certain titles.

SteelSeries sells a cheaper Arctis Nova 5X model with longer battery life, though we haven't been able to test that one yet, and it doesn't support wired connections.

    HyperX Cloud Alpha

The wired HyperX Cloud Alpha often goes for $80 or less, and at that price it’s a decent middle ground between the Cloud Stinger 2 and Astro A40 if you really want a closed-back gaming headset. It’s old, but its plush earpads and headband are comfy, and its detachable mic, while not superb, is still better than the one on the A40. Its treble is underemphasized, however, and again it sounds more “in your head” than Astro's pair.

    SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro

The SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro is a comfortable wired-only headset with a noticeably clearer mic than the Astro A40. It also comes with a useful DAC that makes it easy to adjust the headset’s EQ and game-to-chat mix on the fly. However, its closed-back design can’t provide the same enveloping sense of width, and its default sound can sound piercing in the treble. It’s also pricier, typically hovering in the $200 to $220 range.

    SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless

The SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless is largely similar to its wired counterpart but adds a passable level of active noise cancellation. Being able to hot-swap battery packs and connect to multiple devices at once is also nice. It’s not as convenient for multi-console play as the Astro A50 X, though, and it's usually not much cheaper than the Audeze Maxwell, which sounds better, has a superior mic and lasts longer on a charge.

The Beyerdynamic MMX 200 (left) and HyperX Cloud III Wireless (right).

Photo by Jeff Dunn / Engadget

    Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro

There’s nothing particularly bad about the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro: It uses the same drivers as the DT 900 Pro X, its velour earpads are comfy and its mic works well. It’s just hard to recommend spending $300 on a wired-only headset when the Audeze Maxwell offers wireless functionality and similarly excellent sound — with slightly less spiky treble and more even bass — for the same price. The MMX 300 Pro’s mic isn’t detachable either, and the closed-back design keeps it from sounding as wide as the DT 900 Pro X.

    HyperX Cloud III Wireless

The HyperX Cloud III Wireless is comfy and can last up to 120 hours per charge, but it sounds less dynamic than the older Cloud Alpha Wireless, with weaker bass response. Like that pair, it also lacks a 3.5mm jack, Bluetooth audio support and Xbox compatibility. The Cloud Alpha Wireless still gets nearly three times the battery life, too, so it remains a better buy if you want a wireless headset for PS5 or PC gaming in the $150 range.

    Sennheiser HD 490 Pro

The Sennheiser HD 490 Pro are studio-focused open-back headphones that also work well for gaming. They come with two sets of ear pads, one that slightly elevates the bass and another that bumps the midrange, though they deliver impressive width and detail either way without pushing too hard in one direction. They’re also a pleasure to wear over long periods, both lighter than the DT 900 Pro X and less stiff than the HD 560S. That said, they're usually priced close to $400, and their sound profile is more of a nice alternative to our top picks than something clearly more natural or resolving. Most people don’t need to pay the premium.

Best gaming headsets and headphones: What to look for

    The HyperX Cloud Stinger 2.

Photo by Jeff Dunn / Engadget

Evaluating headphones is a particularly subjective exercise, so calling one pair the absolute “best” is something of a fool’s errand. At a certain point, whether you're an audiophile or not, everything becomes a matter of taste. For most, a headphone with a wide soundscape and strong imaging performance — i.e., the ability to position sounds correctly, so you can more precisely tell where footsteps and other gameplay effects are coming from — will provide the most immersive gaming experience, the kind that makes you feel like your head is within a given scene.

For that, you want a high-quality pair of open-back headphones. That is to say, an over-ear pair whose ear cups do not completely seal off the ear from air and outside noise. These are inherently terrible at isolating you from external sound and preventing others from hearing what you’re playing, so if you often play games in a noisy environment, their benefits will be blunted. But in a quiet room, the best open-back pairs sound significantly wider and more precise than more common closed-back models.

More up for debate is how a good gaming headphone should sound. If you want something that’ll help you in competitive multiplayer games, you may prefer a headphone with a flatter sound signature, which'll keep a game’s mix from being overly boosted in one direction and is less likely to mask the smaller details of what’s happening around you. A slightly brighter sound, one that pushes the upper frequencies a tad, may also work. Open-back headphones almost never have huge sub-bass, so you rarely have to worry about low-end sounds muddying up the rest of the signature. In this light, the fact that an overwhelming amount of gaming headsets are closed-back and bass-heavy seems counterintuitive.

Lots of people love bass, though. And if you don't really care about competitive play, some extra low-end can add a touch of excitement to action scenes or rousing soundtracks. You still don’t want a pair that boosts the low-end too hard — as many gaming headsets do — but the point is that what makes a pair “immersive” to one person may sound dull to another.

Marvel Rivals Season 2 is just days away, meaning you'll be able to jump into the next season of Marvel Rivals, and try out the new Heroes soon. There's a ton of changes coming to the game in the next few months, including a shift in how Team Ups work, and an overhaul of the missions system. If things pan out, it should be easier than ever to earn new cosmetics, and work your way through the Battle Pass.

What's new in Marvel Rivals?(Image credit: NetEase)Marvel Rivals is currently primed and ready for a new season. Developer NetEase has released the full patch notes for the next update, which will add new Heroes, maps, and more. There's still time to work your way through the current Battle Pass, which features an awesome Wolverine skin in its final tier. For now, three strategist teams appear to be the meta, though I'm hoping Season 2 will disrupt this, giving teams more choice in how they play. We'll have to wait and see.

In my Marvel Rivals review, I praised the game's huge suite of Heroes, and the surprising amount of depth found when trying out each one. With Season 2, there's set to be two new Heroes, X-Men legend Emma Frost and the delightfully villainous Ultron. We know more about the former, with the latter arriving later on in the season. Since its launch, Marvel Rivals has changed quite a bit, adding smart changes to Competitive Mode while giving players something to work toward. It's consistent updates like this that make Marvel Rivals a worthy inclusion in our best PC Games of 2025 list. Here's everything you need to know about the next season of Marvel Rivals, including when the current one ends, and what to expect from the new Heroes that are being added. As release day draws nearer, I'll update this page with all of the latest news and info.

When is the next season of Marvel Rivals?

Marvel Rivals Season 2 will arrive on April 11, 2025. This means that it'll launch at the following time according to your timezone:

April 11 at 5AM PT: West Coast USApril 11 at 8AM ET: East Coast USApril 11 at 1PM BST: United KingdomApril 11 at 2PM CET: Central EuropeApril 11 at 9PM JST: Japan

The times above are based on the Tweet linked here, which gives an estimated downtime of 2-3 hours. Given that we now know when the game will go down for maintenance, I've approximated when it'll be back up. This could differ on the day, depending on how the maintenance period goes.

When does the current season of Marvel Rivals end?

Marvel Rivals Season 1.5 will go offline for a few hours before the launch of the second season. Keep an eye on the official Marvel Rivals website for any changes. For now, here are the maintenance times for the scheduled downtime preceding Season 2:

April 11 at 2AM PDT: West Coast USApril 11 at 5AM ET: East Coast USApril 11 at 10AM BST: United KingdomApril 11 at 11AM CET: Central EuropeApril 11 at 6PM JST: Japan

Marvel Rivals Emma Frost release date

Marvel Rivals will add Emma Frost at the launch of the new season on April 11. She's a new Vanguard, operating on the front line of battle by utilizing telekinetic abilities and sheer brawling firepower. NetEase has fully detailed the character in the video below, which shows off each of her abilities. It appears that she'll have a decent bit of range, as well as the ability to apply her diamond skin and move in for close-quarters combat. She has an ultimate that damages multiple enemies at once with telekinetic beams while pulling them toward her. There are some interesting details to Emma Frost's kit that are worth diving into. Firstly, her dash and choke slam ability ends with a sweep kick which knocks enemies back. This can be used to throw an opponent off of an edge for a quick kill.Emma Frost can also place diamond shields, using them to block Ultimates like Iron Man's. This works similarly to Groot's shield walls, in that there's a fair bit of range to where you can place them.Emma Frost joins Hulk, Doctor Strange, Venom, Captain America, The Thing, Groot, and Magneto as a Vanguard. Primarily, she will be used to tank damage on the frontline, though she clearly has a lot of potential as a brawler, and some support elements in her shielding abilities.

Emma Frost joins Hulk, Doctor Strange, Venom, Captain America, The Thing, Groot, and Magneto as a Vanguard. Primarily, she will be used to tank damage on the frontline, though she clearly has a lot of potential as a brawler, and some support elements in her shielding abilities.I'm a Venom main in Marvel Rivals, so I primarily tend to go with Vanguards over the other two classes, so I'll definitely be giving Emma Frost a go when she launches. We'll have to wait and see how her Team Up with Magneto and Psylocke plays out, but having a 2-tank team with Emma Frost and Magneto could be a good place to start in terms of working out a new meta.

    Marvel Rivals Ultron release date

Now for Ultron, who won't launch until Season 2.5. If we look at the release schedule for the previous season, I expect Ultron to arrive sometime in May.We haven't seen much from this upcoming character just yet, only a brief tease in the Season 2 reveal trailer. It's clear that he's set to be the villain of the season but in terms of how he'll play? Well, that's yet to be seen.

Marvel Rivals Season 2 Team Up Changes

Marvel Rivals Season 2 will bring in a bunch of new Team Ups, while removing existing ones. The first new one sees Emma Frost as the anchor Hero, with an ability called Mental Projection. This gives Magneto and Psylocke illusory projections, making it more difficult for the enemy to hit them.Next up is Arcane Order, which sees Doctor Strange sharing his magic abilities with Scarlet Witch, enhancing her attacks. Then, Stars Aligned allows Winter Soldier to leap towards allies at critical moments. Here are the key points on the changes coming to Team Ups in Marvel Rivals Season 2:

The Google Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro could cost the same as their predecessorsThe Google Pixel 10 Pro XL might cost moreThe Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is said to cost less, with future models reducing in price even further

It’s not unusual for prices of an upcoming phone to leak, but what is unusual is to hear about prices for devices that are several years away, and that’s exactly what’s happened today, with a massive Pixel series pricing leak. This leak also includes the Google Pixel 10 line though, so let’s start with that.According to Android Headlines citing “a source familiar with Google’s plans”, the Google Pixel 10 itself will have an unchanged price, at least in the US, making it $799 again. If that holds true elsewhere it will be £799 / AU$1,349.The Google Pixel 10 Pro will also apparently retain its predecessor’s price, meaning a starting price of $999 (and likely £999 / AU$1,699). You will however apparently have to pay more for the Pixel 10 Pro XL, with that said to be roughly $100 more than the $1,099 / £1,099 / AU$1,849 Pixel 9 Pro XL.The best news relates to the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which could actually be cheaper than its predecessor. Apparently, this will start at around $1,600, down from the $1,799 Pixel 9 Pro Fold. That might mean a price elsewhere of roughly £1,600 / AU$2,450.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (Image credit: Philip Berne / Future)

    2026 and beyond

And here’s where we get to the more future-looking news, as the same source claims that the Pro Fold model will drop again in price in 2027, bringing it to around $1,500 (possibly around £1,500 / AU$2,300). There’s no word of a price change next year, so presumably that will stay at $1,600, and in 2028 it will apparently remain at $1,500.The source also claims that Google will keep offering its current selection of handsets – a standard phone, a Pro model, a Pro XL, and a Pro Fold, as well as the A-series – through to at least the Pixel 13 series in 2028.And speaking of the A-series, this will apparently remain at $499 (likely £499 / AU$849) through at least the Pixel 12a in 2028.All that said, we’d take these claims with a pinch of salt. Any leaks that look this far ahead could easily be wrong, as even if this is Google’s plan currently, that could change. The claim that Google will gradually reduce the price of the Pro Fold line is especially surprising, since we haven’t seen that with other foldables so far, and with tariffs and inflation, that could be hard to achieve. But then this might be exactly what’s needed to make foldable phones mainstream. We should find out whether the first of these claims are accurate in August, as that’s probably when the Pixel 10 series will launch.

Instagram has never released a native app for Apple’s iPadsThat might soon change, as a leak claims an iPad app is coming soonFor now, you can install an Instagram web app while you wait

Instagram has long lacked a native iPad app, but that could soon change, at least according to a claim from The Information. That could be welcome news for iPad and Instagram fans who are tired of having to use a different device for their favorite social media site. The Information’s report cites an Instagram employee who supposedly has knowledge of the plans. This worker states that Instagram developer Meta is hoping to take advantage of the turmoil facing TikTok – which could be forced to sell its American business under pressure from US president Donald Trump – to target TikTok users who might be looking for an alternative app. While Instagram has never had a native iPad app, you’ve been able to run it on Apple’s tablets for a while. That’s because iPads are able to run apps designed for the iPhone, although in Instagram’s case the experience is not well optimized for Apple’s tablet.Instagram recently took aim at TikTok owner ByteDance in another way, debuting a video-editing app called Edits that's designed to compete with ByteDance’s CapCut. CapCut was recently removed from Apple’s App Store due to federal restrictions on its parent company’s apps.

How to install Instagram on your iPad

While we wait for a native Instagram app on the iPad, you can actually add the social media site to your Apple tablet in the form of a web app. This works like a normal app, so it can be added to your iPad’s Dock and found in the App Switcher.First, go to instagram.com in Safari and log in. Tap the share sheet button and select Add to Home Screen > Add. This places a web app on your iPad that launches Instagram. Tap the app icon that has appeared and log in again. That’s all you need to do. The web app has a few restrictions compared to Instagram’s native iPhone app – you can’t post images, for example, but you can browse feeds, send direct messages, like posts and add comments. For now, this method will have to suffice if you want an Instagram app on your iPad. But with a native app supposedly on the way, workarounds like this might not be needed for much longer.

Ninja has launched an extra-large version of its Sizzle Pro indoor grillIt's large enough to cook family meals and is non-stick for easy cleaningIt's available in the US for $199.99 but isn't currently sold elsewhere

Ninja has released a new indoor grill with an extra-large cooking area that's big enough to cook up to 10 burgers at once so that you and your guests can all eat together, or so you can prepare whole family meals.Ninja is well known for making some of the best air fryers you can buy, but it's also no slouch when it comes to hybrid cookers and indoor electric grills. The new Ninja Sizzle Pro XL is a super-sized version of the original Sizzle Pro, with a 20-inch griddle that gives you enough space to cook a whole stack of pancakes for a family of four or prepare a huge batch of fried rice for a quick weekday dinner. You can cook with the lid up or down, depending on whether you want to create char-grilled flavor when cooking meat or lock in moisture when preparing fish and vegetables. When you're done, the non-stick ceramic plates are a piece of cake to clean, and you can remove the ventilated lid for hand-washing. No more awkward scrubbing.

    License to grill

The Ninja Sizzle Pro XL is available now direct from Ninja for $199.99. That's approximately £160 / AU$330, but the grill is currently only available in the US, and I expect it's likely to stay that way since the original Sizzle Pro isn't available in other countries either. If you can't get your hands on the Sizzle Pro XL, take a look at the Ninja Woodfire Pro Connect XL, which adds a smoky flavor to your food using a small portion of woodchips, and earned a full five stars from our reviewer thanks to its extra large capacity and smart thermostat for temperature control.

Google's March Wear OS update has been causing Pixel Watch problemsUsers have reported notification lag, crashing, and moreAn April hotfix has rolled out that appears to solve those issues

Google appears to have rolled out an April hotfix for the delayed-notifications, crashing, and performance issues caused by the Google Pixel Watch Wear OS 5.1 update that rolled out in March.Redditors in the r/Pixelwatch subreddit noted the rollout on April 8. We've reached out to Google to confirm whether or not this specifically fixes the aforementioned issues, and while the company has yet to respond, the early signs are promising. In March Google told TechRadar: "We’re aware of an issue affecting a very small number of Pixel Watch users, where they are experiencing delayed notifications on their device after taking the March update."Google confirmed that it was investigating and said it would share more details when a fix was ready. While those details have yet to be shared, users are reporting that many of the issues appear to be solved.

    Wear OS 5.1 fixed

"I've been testing it for around 2 hours and so far so good regarding the notification lag," one Redditor stated. Another said the update had "Fixed my issues with editing the watchface in the phone app. It was crashing and lagging. Back to smooth again."Users are downloading the fix on all three Pixel Watch models, including the original, the Pixel Watch 2, and Google's best Android smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 3.One issue that went unreported when the first update rolled out last month was battery drain. However, in the wake of the hotfix, a few users have reported the issue, hoping it'll be fixed."I completed the update, and now everything is working," another reported users. You should be able to download the latest Wear OS 5.1 hotfix from Settings > System > System updates, tapping multiple times to trigger the download.

Strava just got four major upgradesThe company has added new route filtering, a redesigned activity page, and a Strava Stickers upgradeThe biggest change is a new proprietary map rendering engine

Strava has added four new updates to its app, including an absolutely massive 3D map rendering overhaul that promises a new level of detail to terrain and routes, making one of the best fitness apps around even better.Strava's more modest changes include updates to Saved Routes filtering, a new Activity Details page, and Sticker exporting.Strava subscribers can now search Saved Routes by keyword or filter them by sport type, distance, elevation, owner, or even surface type. The Activity Details page is now more immersive, with a full-screen layout including route, photos, and videos showcased, letting you more easily see your best moments and achievements.Thirdly, Strava Stickers can now be exported directly to Instagram Stories, and you can download them for use on other platforms. As mentioned, however, it's the 3D mapping that we're really excited about.

    Strava's new 3D mapping

Strava's rich new 3D mapping (Image credit: Strava)

Strava has integrated its own proprietary mapping engine into the Strava app. The company says it will bring lifelike 3D terrain, detailed satellite imagery, and new map layers for winter trails and activities.Strava's Map Rendering Engine (MRE) now uses a hilariously-named technology called FATMAP, a company it acquired in 2022. With the new maps, users will get more detailed insight into Avalanche Gradients, general gradients, aspect (the direction a slope faces), and improved winter map styles to help you plan cold-weather activity. You can find the new maps in the Maps tab on the app, and they'll even show when you're looking back at previous activities. Strava says that it's going to keep building on MRE to add even more improvements and map innovations in the future, so there should be plenty to look forward to.

Users are reporting a persistent Google Messages bugIt repeatedly asks for an emoji reaction to images in chatsThe issue may be limited to users running the beta app

We're seeing multiple reports of a rather annoying emoji reaction bug in Google Messages – one that prompts you to apply a reaction to the last received message before you can do anything else, if the last message in the chat was an image. These reports surfaced on Reddit (via Android Police) in the last few days, and it seems quite a few users have come across them. It doesn't really break the app, but it does make for a more frustrating user experience.Emoji reactions were added to Google Messages last year, one of several upgrades rolled out to the app recently to help it catch up to the other popular messaging services out there, including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and iMessage. It means you can react to any message with an emoji of your choice, rather than sending a full reply: but with this bug users are being prompted to leave a reaction as soon as they go back to a chat. Ordinarily, you need to long press a message to bring up the emojis.

    Finding a fix

Reactions automatically popping up from r/GoogleMessages

As far as bugs in Google Messages go, this isn't the most serious we've ever come across. The easiest way to fix the problem is to send a standard text message to add to the chat, which seems to resume normal service again. We've asked Google for an update on the issue and will update this story if we hear back. The bug also seems to be affecting users of the beta version of Google Messages too – so you could try updating to the latest stable release to solve the issue. You can do this from the Google Messages listing in the Play Store app on your phone.Hopefully this annoyance will be caught before it rolls out more widely, which should be the case if it's only beta users who are affected. After all, the whole purpose of beta testing is to squash these kinds of bugs ahead of a full update.Diligent code diggers have spotted numerous new features apparently on the way to Google Messages: it looks likely that we'll see improvements to how longer texts are handled, and how you can manage your busy group chats.

Netflix's second most-watched movie right now is the buddy comedy One Of Them Days, in which best friends Dreux and Alyssa race across LA to try and get enough cash to avoid being evicted.Starring Keke Palmer and SZA, it's a fun ride and while it gets a bit cartoony in places, it's a great example of why buddy comedies are such a popular genre on the best streaming services: you get action, you get adventure, you get wisecracks... in other words, you get a lot of entertainment. There are lots of brilliant buddy movies out there, and lots of buddy comedies currently make up some of the best Netflix movies you can stream – so if you're looking for a buddy movie to watch with your best buds, or to stream solo, I think you'll enjoy at least two of these three.

    Friday

Where to watch: Netflix (US, UK, AU)

Ice Cube and Chris Tucker play newly unemployed Craig and his stoner pal Smokey who, one Friday in LA, suddenly need to find $200 to avoid a world of trouble. As you'd expect from an Ice Cube movie it's got a killer soundtrack, but while some of the gags are a bit toilet humor the film itself is strong: Entertainment Weekly said that "Friday has energy, and sass, and the nerve to suggest that the line between tragedy and comedy may be in the bloodshot eye of the beholder."Friday was released after a slew of movies that showed South Central LA as a violent criminal hellhole, and that made it a refreshing correction: as Emanuel Levy wrote: "A new generation of Black talent (director Gray, actors Chris Tucker and Ice Cube) bring verve to this much welcome comedic view of street life in South Central, after mostly crime and drug pictures set there."If you're easily offended this might not be for you; Variety was one of many publications to point out that a lot of the humor was very crude. But many more found it hilarious, including the Arizona Daily Star: The film "synthesizes blaxploitation and pot-comedy genres and melds them into a colossus of unending laughs."

    Wedding Crashers

Where to watch: Netflix (US, UK), Prime Video (AU)

I have a rule: if it's got Walken, it's worth watching. And this is no exception. Walken is a hoot every time he's on screen in this fun comedy about two men, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, whose idea of a good time is to crash strangers' weddings to get free booze and pick up women. But then the duo crash the wedding of Treasury Secretary William Cleary (Walken)'s daughter, and plans start to go awry. The Chicago Reader puts it plainly: "Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are enormously funny." The Sydney Morning Herald liked it too: "It's an easy, breezy, lanky Hollywood rom-com with a brain, for most of its running time."The casting is key here, because as the Bangor Daily News put it: "The film's best element is the inspired casting of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson; their easy repartee helps to grease over the film's shortcomings." Isla Fisher as Walken's daughter is particularly great: as Three Movie Buffs said, she "manages to steal every scene that she's in."

    Me Time

Where to watch: Netflix (US, UK, AU)

Fancy a hate-watch? Any film with a 7% Rotten Tomatoes rating begs to be watched, if only to find out why so many people hated it. This Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg movie about a bored dad who finds some "me time" when his wife and kids are away has been pelted with so many rotten tomatoes I almost feel sorry for it.How bad can it be? The critics were almost unanimous: it's a promising premise that's completely wasted by the script and phoned-in performances.Empire Magazine was not amused. The jokes are "crass" and the stunts are "hackneyed"; a rare highlight is Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, an anarchic Uber driver who's genuinely funny. But the film itself is just chaotic. ABC News agreed. "This laugh-starved, buddy comedy is crushingly dim-witted and disposable."Groucho Reviews didn't like it either. It's "a very strange mix of family sitcom and R-rated bro-down buddy comedy. A witless string of dumb comic set pieces and an unfunny slog." And Uproxx perhaps summed up the problem: "Me Time is an R-rated comedy about parenthood. Why do most of the jokes feel like they're aimed at 8-year-olds?"

Spotify has denied rumors that it's bringing ads to its Premium tierThe platform shared a post on X to confirm the rumors are false after users were speculating online Other services such as Netflix have introduced cheaper subscription tiers with ads, so could Spotify follow suit?

If you’re a Spotify Premium subscriber, allow yourself to rejoice in the good news I’m about to share as the platform has officially shut down the rumors that it’s bringing ads to its Premium tier.Spotify debunked the speculation in a post on X (formerly Twitter), addressing the online rumor and explicitly stating that this is in fact ‘false’ and that its Premium tier will ‘remain ad-free’.The platform then doubled down by relying on its own post repeating ‘This rumor is false. Premium music listening is ad-free,’ with the exception of podcasts. But where did these rumors start?

There is a rumor circulating that Spotify is putting ads into premium music listening. This rumor is false. Premium music listening is and will remain ad-free.April 8, 2025

In February, many Spotify Premium users took to Spotify’s Community forum after noticing an odd bug that was showing ads in the service’s ad-free tier. It took Spotify a few weeks later to finally fix the bug - for now, at least. However, it still wasn’t enough to reassure its subscribers that Premium would remain completely ad-free.Since Spotify fixed the bug there have been no further reports or complaints about any recurrences, but it hasn’t stopped Premium users from latching onto this conspiracyAlthough Spotify has worked hard to gain its status as one of the best music streaming services, it has the tendency to flop in certain aspects. For some, this is more than just a simple ‘off day’.

Is Spotify shaking up its subscription tier structure?

It doesn’t take an avid Spotify listener to see that the platform is going through some rough patches - we all know that I’m talking about the possible, yet impossible, arrival of a Spotify HiFi tier.Music platforms aside, it’s become common practice for the best streaming services to introduce more affordable subscription plans that feature ads in between movies and shows - Netflix, Prime Video, that’s you guysSo as a subscriber to both types of entertainment platforms, I’m asking myself the question; could a similar tier soon be applied to music streaming? The recent ads in the Premium bug don’t help this speculation. Now that Spotify HiFi is slated to launch late this year, I’m not ruling out the possibility of a subscription tier shake-up which could see Spotify follow the steps of Netflix and introduce a cheaper tier with ads. But even then, surely Spotify would have to eradicate its free tier altogether?

Sid Meier's Civilization 7 update 1.2.0 launches on April 22It finally brings back the ability to play just one more turnOther new additions include new Resources, a Team Multiplayer mode, and more

If you're a long-time Civilization fan like me, then the next update for Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is not one that you will want to miss.As outlined in the latest update check-in post on the official Civilization blog, update 1.2.0 is currently set for an April 22, 2025, launch. It introduces a wide range of quality-of-life changes, UI improvements, updates to mechanics, and much more. For me, by far the most exciting addition is the return of the legendary "Just one more turn..." option, which used to appear after you finished a match. It allowed you to continue your game, which was ideal if there were still things that you wanted to experience or if you'd just had your match ended by a sudden and unexpected loss.In Civilization 7, the option will lock Age Progress to 100% but not block you through completing other victory paths and even obtaining Legacy Path achievements. In update 1.2.0, the option will only be available at the end of the Modern Age - but the development team is working on implementing it in single Age games too. There will also be changes to how Resources work, including the addition of ten new resources with their own unique new Narrative Events. Resources will also appear differently thanks to a newly added randomized generation system, which should help each Age feel more distinct.Food will be rebalanced too, making strategies that rely on population growth much more viable. We're also getting a new Teams Multiplayer mode, another thing that was present in previous Civ games. Players on the same team will share map visibility, relationships, war status, alliance status, and victory states - though not technologies, civics, or Legacy Path progress. All of this is on top of some heavily requested smaller additions, such as the ability to queue research, repair all buildings in a settlement, improved map generation, and general bug fixes and UI polish. Full details will be available in the Update Notes on April 22.Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is available now for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. A Nintendo Switch 2 version will launch on June 5, 2025.

1939 classic The Wizard of Oz is coming to the Las Vegas SphereUsing the power of AI, Google is reimagining the film for the 16k spherical screenThe Wizard of Oz at The Sphere opens on August 28

The Wizard of Oz is coming to the Las Vegas Sphere, and it's all thanks to Google's incredible AI technology.Following last week's announcement that the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz is being reimagined for Las Vegas' iconic 16K LED screen spherical theater, set to open on August 28, Google is now giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the magic behind the production. While The Wizard of Oz was not the first film to be shot in color, it's often referenced as one of the first true movie experiences to capture color efficiently, thanks to its incredible mix of colors and use of black-and-white in the film's Kansas scenes. In Google's blog post, the company says, "Likewise, “The Wizard of Oz” may not be the first film to be reconceptualized with AI, but it may soon be known for that, too."This is a massive project combining the teams at Google DeepMind, Google Cloud, Sphere Studios, Magnopus, and Warner Bros. Discovery to create an incredible experience, coming off the success of Wicked, which is set in the same world as The Wizard of Oz.With the launch of Wicked: For Good set for November 2025, it's the perfect time to put eyes on the movie that inspired Elphaba and Glinda's epic two-part musical. The power of tech and AI will showcase The Wizard of Oz in the "venue's 17,600-seat spherical space to create an immersive sensory experience," and Google says "generative AI will take center stage, alongside Dorothy, Toto and more munchkins than could ever fit in a multiplex."

How to turn a classic into a modern epic

Google's blog post on the work that has gone into bringing The Wizard of Oz to The Sphere is nothing short of mind-blowing.The man behind the project, Buzz Hays, is the global lead for entertainment industry solutions at Google Cloud and a veteran producer in the world of Hollywood. He said, "We’re starting with the original four-by-three image on a 35mm piece of celluloid — it’s actually three separate, grainy film negatives; that’s how they shot Technicolor,” Hays says. “That obviously won’t work on a screen that is 160,000 square feet. So we’re working with Sphere Studios, Magnopus and visual effects artists around the world, alongside our AI models, to effectively bring the original characters and environments to life on a whole new canvas — creating an immersive entertainment experience that still respects the original in every way.”The Sphere has the highest resolution screen in the world, which means The Wizard of OZ's grainy 1939 imagery would've caused a huge issue for the experience. Luckily, the teams found solutions using Veo, Imagen, and Gemini to completely transform the movie using an "AI-based 'super resolution' tool to turn those tiny celluloid frames from 1939 into ultra-ultra-high definition imagery that will pop inside Sphere."Following the upscaling, the teams then perform a process called AI outpainting, which essentially expands the scenes of The Wizard of Oz to fit the larger space found on the massive screen. AI then generates elements of the performances to fill out the created space and make the shots look and feel seamless.

Keeping the soul of the original

While I don't blame you if you think this sounds like an AI-generated catastrophe, ruining a classic that shouldn't be messed with, Google emphasises how the team has the traditions of cinema at the forefront of every decision."In addition to old footage, the team scoured archives to build a vast collection of supplementary material, such as the shooting script, production illustrations, photographs, set plans and scores."Then, these materials were uploaded to Veo and Gemini to train the models and build on the "specific details of the original characters, their environments and even elements of the production, like camera focal lengths for specific scenes.""With far more source material than just the 102-minute film to work with, the quality of the outputs dramatically improved. Now, Dorothy’s freckles snap into focus, and Toto can scamper more seamlessly through more scenes."

RTX 5060 Ti price rumor suggests Nvidia could lower MSRPsSupposedly we’re looking at $379 and $429 for the 8GB and 16GB models respectivelyPrevious pricing speculation has hinted that Nvidia might stick to the same MSRPs as the RTX 4060 Ti models, though

Nvidia’s RTX 5060 Ti graphics cards could be priced more affordably than their predecessors, in a potential twist I did not see coming – if this rumor turns out to be true, of course.VideoCardz reports that the pricing speculation comes from the Board Channels forum over in China, which can provide reliable info (or has done in the past) via the supply chain. We’re told that the RTX 5060 Ti with 8GB is going to launch at an MSRP of $379 in the US, and the 16GB version will pitch in at $429, as per details passed on to graphics card makers by Nvidia. To refresh your memory, that’s a fair bit cheaper than the RTX 4060 Ti was priced at when the same flavors of that GPU were released. It arrived at $399 for the 8GB version and $499 for the 16GB card from the Lovelace generation.Supposedly, Nvidia is about to launch its RTX 5060 Ti models in the middle of this month, according to the rumor mill, and they might go on sale come April 16The RTX 5060 vanilla graphics card should also be unveiled next week, but won’t hit shelves until mid-May, if the grapevine is correct. There’s no mention of the price tag of that graphics card, incidentally, which could indicate that it is indeed further out from launch.

Analysis: Stick or twist with pricing - and standing on the RTX 5070's toes

Go nuts with the saltshaker here because, as VideoCardz points out, pre-release pricing rumors are notoriously, well, shaky by nature. Still, this is at least a more solid source than an early product listing from an obscure retailer in Canada or Europe pinning claimed pricing on a GPU (a price that could be completely made up in order to grab a bit of limelight from reports). Also, if we are a week away from the launch of the RTX 5060 Ti as theorized, it’d make sense that Nvidia would have set pricing by now, and graphics card makers would likely have been informed. So, the rumor is plausible, if a definite twist on what I expected: remember, other recent speculation, also from the Board Channels, suggested Nvidia might stick to the same pricing as the RTX 4060 Ti models. So, we should remain skeptical for sure, and I’ve also got to admit, I find it difficult to believe that Nvidia is going to drop pricing as suggested here. Why? Because even if Team Green merely sticks with the same pricing as the RTX 4060 Ti, the base 8GB model of the RTX 5060 Ti will still likely fly off the shelves – let alone if pricing dips. The 16GB version sounds like compelling value at a theoretical $429, too, particularly considering the concerns about VRAM that have been aired time and again. The key question is then: how will Nvidia cope with supplying these GPUs under the even greater level of demand that keener pricing will bring?Maybe Nvidia is finally turning a corner with its production and supply issues? Or maybe it just hopes that lowered pricing for more mainstream Blackwell GPUs will gain some much-needed goodwill with PC gamers – even if stock remains a scramble (because that won’t always be the case, as supply will be ironed out eventually). If these prices do turn out to be real, it marks a definite change of stance from Nvidia, perhaps to gain favor with gamers. Although I can’t help but feel that it’d also stand on the toes of the RTX 5070, which is already a graphics card that’s viewed rather unfavorably for its price-to-performance ratio, and lack of VRAM, with just 12GB on board. And so, the upper-tier RTX 5060 Ti, at nearly a quarter less with its MSRP, loaded with 16GB – a more future-proof VRAM pool – could undermine the RTX 5070 even further in this pricing scenario. The other way of angling that theorizing, though, is that it hints that Nvidia is going to make less of a generational leap with the RTX 5060 Ti’s performance versus the RTX 4060 Ti than expected (so the RTX 5070 isn’t threatened in this way). Hopefully, we’ll see how this plays out next week.

GreyNoise says scannings for vulnerable TVT DVRs are spikingMore than 2,500 unique IP addresses were hunting at one pointA 2024 vulnerability allows threat actors to run admin commands on the device

Operators of the Mirai botnet are actively hunting for vulnerable TVT DVRs to assimilate them into the nefarious network, cybersecurity researchers GreyNoise have revealed after observing a spike in exploitation attempts. In May 2024, security researchers from SSD Secure Disclosure reported on a vulnerability affecting NVMS9000 DVRs built by the Shenzhen-based TVT Digital Technology manufacturer. The vulnerability was described as an authentication bypass, allowing threat actors to run admin commands on the device unabated. All versions prior to 1.3.4 were said to be affected, but a patch was released and versions 1.3.4 and newer were no longer vulnerable.

    "No malicious files hosted"

Users who don’t keep track of updates and don’t patch their systems on time are now at risk. GreyNoise said that on April 3 the attack peaked, with more than 2,500 unique IP addresses scanning for vulnerable endpoints. We don’t know how many of these DVRs there are or how big the attack surface might be.The researchers said that the malware being deployed on the DVRs is tied to Mirai, one of the most infamous botnets in cybersecurity history. Mirai usually targets smart devices, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and internet-connected hardware, and is used to run disruptive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.GreyNoise said that in the past 30 days it logged 6,600 unique IP addresses associated with this activity. All of the addresses were confirmed to be malicious. They mostly came from Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, targeting devices in the US, UK, and Germany.Mirai operators are quite active this year. In mid-January, news broke that they targeted industrial routers vulnerable to a zero-day. A few weeks later, security researchers from Akamai said they caught a new variant of the botnet targeting business phone devices built by Mitel.Via BleepingComputer

Meet Dan Clark Audio's latest elite planar magnetic wired over-ears Noire X feature proprietary tech used in headphones nearer $5,000 / £4,100 They're cheaper than that – although hardly entry-level

Dark, brooding, black-on-black Nickel-Titanium alloy with Gorilla Glass 3 and a leather-wrapped headband, Dan Clark Audio’s Noire X would be the ideal gothic-inspired cans for Vince Noir (of UK early-noughties classic The Mighty Boosh fame) or of course for the man in black himself, JR Cash. They'd also be fantastic for me and my devotion to wired, leave-me-alone listening. What you're looking at is a pair of closed-back planar magnetic headphones of the highest order. They also promise to bring Dan Clark Audio – a company that holds six tech innovation patents to date – to a "more accessible" price.Okay, that price is still an eye-watering £1,000 (so around $1,280 or AU$2,135), but you're getting the San Diego-based headphone maker's proprietary planar driver and "metamaterial tuning tech" that went into its top-tier, closed-back Stealth and open-back Expanse, both of which retail at £4,100 – so, you know… bargain.DCA describes Noire X as the Johnny Cash of headphones, and I don't mind it. (*Sings If they were mine, I'd walk the line… )

Why planar is better than dynamic in the ring of fire

Noire X feature DCA's upgraded Aeon planar driver – but let us backtrack just a second. Most headphones use dynamic drivers, which combine a stiff cone-shaped diaphragm with a voice coil around a magnet, to produce sound waves via pistonic movement. Noire X uses a thin membrane that is immersed in a magnetic field, causing it to vibrate – aka a planar magnetic driver. This is often considered a superior headphone solution for detail, timing and an expansive soundstage – when it is done well. The Noire X's new 62x34mm driver diaphragm is significantly more rigid than its predecessor, following "extensive R&D investments" and "new manufacturing processes" to make the upgrade. The Noire X’s self-tensioning headband promises to reduce listening fatigue by distributing pressure evenly across the head for a ‘barely there’ fit. You're also getting newly designed ear pads featuring ultra-stable, memory foam-wrapped synthetic leather (do note though, real leather is used for the headband). Finally, a comprehensive range of cable terminations comes with your purchase, including combo 6.3mm and 3.5mm tips, balanced 4.4mm and 4-pin XLR. If you're seeking greater flexibility in cable length and termination, you could always upgrade to DCA’s premium VIVO cables, available in multiple lengths and options.Given the Noire X's quoted Impedance (13Ω) and recommended minimum power of 250mW @ 16Ω, it would be advisable to supply them with one of the best headphone DACs that include a jolt of extra oomph to get the best out of them – but I have a couple of those. What I don't have is these headphones…

Some Samsung Galaxy Watch models offer sleep apnea detectionThe company is partnering with Stanford University to research more innovation in the sectorIt hopes to use AI to go beyond detection and develop sleep apnea management technology

Samsung has announced ambitious plans to take the sleep apnea features of its Galaxy Watch range beyond detection, possibly using AI to one day power sleep apnea management.Announced on April 8, Samsung has partnered with Stanford University and Stanford Medicine to conduct a research project into "an innovative health solution based on Samsung's obstructive sleep apnea feature."Samsung says the study is designed "to explore potential ways to further enhance Samsung’s Sleep Apnea feature to better support sleep health through timely interventions."According to Samsung, the company wants to move beyond detection, the current functionality offered by devices like the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch 7, and toward technology that can help users manage the condition.

Samsung isn't sleeping on sleep apnea

Perhaps most excitingly, Samsung specifically mentions AI technology, which it hopes to leverage in this pursuit, "empowering users with the best possible sleep tools to improve their health".Samsung also noted that its sleep apnea feature was recently certified in Brazil and will roll out to the country in April to bring the total number of supported territories to 29.The feature is designed to help spot and detect sleep apnea earlier to prevent long-term complications, a noble goal shared by Apple, which added sleep apnea detection to its best Apple Watch models last year.According to estimates, sleep apnea affects more than one billion people worldwide, mostly undetected. Sleep apnea is a condition where the body briefly stops breathing during sleep, cutting off oxygen to the body. Undiagnosed, it can cause more significant health complications such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiac issues. It sounds like Samsung's ambitions extend beyond mere detection, with future sights set clearly on monitoring the condition or perhaps even preventing it in the first place. In more immediate Galaxy Watch news, we're expecting a new Galaxy Watch 8 and possibly a classic model to debut sometime this summer.

Output resolution for Nintendo Switch 2 camera models have been revealedThe official camera outputs at 1080p, while Hori's third-party option comes in at just 480pBoth are currently listed on the UK My Nintendo Store website

Hori's Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat camera may be cheaper than the official option, but its resolution will be significantly worse overall.IGN spotted that both the official Nintendo Switch 2 Camera accessory, and the third-party Hori Piranha Plant Camera have had their outputted resolutions confirmed on the My Nintendo UK store. The official Nintendo Switch 2 Camera accessory is pricier at $49.99 / £49.99, but it has video capture quality of 1080p.I can see why folks are more interesting in Hori's officially licensed camera. The Piranha Plant design is eye-catching, and it might look nice perched on top of your Switch 2 system. It's also much cheaper, with a UK price of £33.99.The major downside here is that Hori's model outputs at a paltry 480p, which will make for a much grainier image compared to the official camera. This is even more of an issue given that - at least from what we've seen so far - the camera output is quite small on the TV screen. This will make your appearance even less defined when compared to that sharper Full HD output.I do love the look of Hori's camera, especially when stood next to the rather boring design Nintendo has opted for. So for kids and family, the Piranha Plant camera may still be a decent and affordable choice. But for more fulsome multiplayer sessions with friends, it's tough to argue against the official camera being the way to go.At TRG, we will of course endeavor to have both options tested and reviewed around launch time, so there's still a chance Hori's camera could surprise us. But official specs typically don't lie, and right now, it's not looking good for this cheaper model.

AMD's Ryzen AI Max 395+ will be used in GMKtec's upcoming mini-PCIt's reportedly launching in MayChina's pre-order pricing indicates a $2,000 price point for US consumers

It's safe to say that chips from the likes of Intel and AMD are once again in the spotlight, considering their integrated graphics gaming performance capabilities amid a messy GPU market - and now, one of Team Red's strongest processors ever will finally be available in a mini-PC.As VideoCardz reported, GMKtec could launch a new mini-PC, the EVO-X2, in May, powered by AMD's Ryzen AI Max 395+ APU. This comes from VideoCardz's insight into pre-order details: pre-orders are already live in China, with pricing confirmed at 14,999 RMB, which roughly converts to around $2,000 (without tariffs!) / £1,599 / AU$3,400 - and pre-orders for US and EU buyers are reportedly set for April 15.This is the listing for the highest tier configuration, which includes 128GB of RAM and 2TB of storage space - so it's got a lot to offer for tiny PC lovers. While its price is certainly hefty, it's worth noting that the Ryzen AI Max 395+ processor using the Radeon 8060S iGPU is an absolute powerhouse, especially for gamers. ETA Prime on YouTube has previously showcased its performance in games like Cyberpunk 2077 - on the ultra graphics preset in 1440p (with upscaling), there's a near-consistent 60fps, which isn't possible for some desktop GPUs.

It's all possible thanks to the APU's 16 cores and 32 threads, along with a seriously impressive 40 cores on the Radeon 8060S integrated GPU. It's also a significant step in the direction of discrete GPUs becoming obsolete: although that may still be a long way away considering the presence of high-end GPUs like the RTX 5080 or RTX 5090, it's a promising start. The system shown in the video (available above) using the APU is a prototype, so aspects like cooling, power consumption, and chassis dimensions are yet to be finalized - we'll have to wait and see its real-world performance ceiling.Fortunately, mini PCs like this offer gamers a way into the PC gaming ecosystem, supposedly at the same price (in fact, even less with the current inflated GPU prices) as Nvidia's RTX 5090 would cost with its $1,999 / £1,939 / AU$4,039 price - and that’s for a whole system, not just a graphics card. However, the issue of tariffs could see the purported $2,000 price of the GMKtec EVO-X2 skyrocket soon.

Systems powered by AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ chips aren't safe from inflation and tariffs either...

As of now, no PC hardware (including game consoles) is safe from tariffs: we've already seen Nintendo pause pre-orders for its Switch 2 in the US due to uncertainty from tariffs, including retailers selling AMD and Nvidia partner cards, and I fully expect the same to apply to APU-powered systems. If the $2,000 price point is legitimate, then we could easily see a price point upwards of $3,000 in the US with the tariffs currently in place - or even worse, no availability whatsoever. It's an indication of how uncertain the PC gaming space is at the moment, and it's probably one of the worst possible times for sanctions to come into effect.Nvidia, in particular, is facing difficulties with its new RTX 5000 series GPU lineup, with driver problems, missing ROPs, and limited availability at the forefront of it all. With inflation set to hike even more, it'll likely place PC gamers like me further away from the temptation of buying any of the Blackwell GPUs.There aren't any Ryzen AI Max+ APUs used in handheld gaming PCs just yet, but if there was any chance of that happening any time soon, you can probably forget about it for now. My only hope is that this present debacle doesn't last too long...

Like a laser sight emerging from the dark, Hulu has dropped a surprise trailer for the long rumoured secret Predator movie, Predator: Killer of Killers.Confirming that the franchise renaissance director Dan Trachtenberg kicked off with 2022’s Prey is in full swing, the new movie “follows three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge; a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession; and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause. But while all these warriors are killers in their own right, they are merely prey for their new opponent – the ultimate killer of killers.”And judging by the trailer – which you can watch below – the Predator’s journey through the ages looks like a bloody good time, with the historical carnage of Prey given a dose of animated excess.

It’s fair to say the Predator franchise has had its ups and downs. While the Arnie-starring original is a bonafide classic featuring the most macho handshake of all time, the sequel – which sees the titular hunter in the centre of an LA gang war – is less well regarded, although has built up a cult following over time. While the franchise had a pair of crossover films with the Alien series in the 2000’s, it took two decades for another stand-alone Predator movie, 2010’s Predators. Produced by Robert Rodriguez, the film flipped the original on its head, seeing a group of mercenaries and various other ne'er-do-wells dropped into the Yautja’s game reserve. Despite a stacked cast featuring the likes of Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Walton Goggins and Laurence Fishburne, the film received a lukewarm reception, leaving the franchise dormant until Shane Black’s 2018 effort, The Predator, which again, failed to reignite the franchise.

What can we expect from Predator: Killer of Killers?

Prey proved to be a shot in the arm for the Predator franchise, taking it in a bold new direction with its story of a young Comanche woman (Amber Midthunder) having to protect her tribe from a vicious Yautja hunter. The historical setting, fresh themes and shocking violence made for the best reviewed installment to date and Predator: Killer of Killers looks to be more of the same, albeit with the animated medium cranking things up a notch.Taking an anthology approach, the new movie sees the fearsome extra-terrestrial warrior battling some of the best of the best from across the eras from blood spattered vikings to sword swinging samurais and ace WW2 Spitfire pilots, all brought to life in stunning animation courtesy of The Third Floor. If live action is more your thing, worry not, as Trachtenberg also has a third Predator film, Badlands, which sees the warrior become the hero, hitting cinemas in November. In the meantime, we can’t wait for Predator: Killer of Killers to arrive on some of the best streaming services (Hulu in the US, Disney Plus worldwide) on June 6, when it’ll likely become one of the best Disney+ movies of the year.
