Rank 4207While there’s no evidence linking AI to mass layoffs, the tech has already ‘changed worker psychology’ When artificial intelligence researcher Mrinank Sharma quit his job at Anthropic earlier this year, the news rippled across the internet. In his resignation letter, posted on X and viewed 15.3m times, Sharma warned of a world “in peril” from the technology he had helped build. “It is clear to me the time has come to move on,” he wrote. His next move: a poetry degree. Continue reading...

Rank 4209Voters approved nearly every datacenter moratorium that was on the ballot, dozens in total in Tuesday’s elections Track live results from all 50 states Send us your questions about the US midterms results and Democrats’ ‘blue wave’ There were three big losers in Tuesday’s midterm elections in the US: Donald Trump, Elon Musk and datacenters. Datacenters, the facilities full of semiconductor chips that power artificial intelligence and a host of other online products, were on the ballot in elections in at least 40 jurisdictions across 10 states. Voters responded with a strong rebuke of the giant buildings, which have has become a symbol of the tech industry and AI. Continue reading...

Rank 4210The tech industry spent big on the midterms, but it turned out to be a poor investment. Elon Musk poured a staggering $446m dollars into Republican-aligned political action committees (Pacs) and groups since last year, but his efforts didn’t pay off. Democrats won every one of the five Senate races where Musk’s America Pac spent the most money backing Republican candidates. Carter Sherman and Kai Wright are joined by the Guardian’s US tech editor, Blake Montgomery, to ask what the ‘blue tsunami’ will mean for Musk and the wider tech industry. Will this spell the end of AI datacenters? And if so, what could this mean for the US economy? Continue reading...

Rank 4217From today, Apple's new iPad mini with an OLED display, M6 iMac, and its latest MacBook Pro models are available to buy from Apple's online store and in the Apple Store app, with the first pre-orders also arriving to customers today and both devices reaching Apple Store locations and Apple Authorized Resellers. OLED iPad Mini The eighth-generation iPad mini is Apple's smallest tablet with an OLED display. The 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR display offers up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a 1-nit minimum brightness, with a nano-texture glass option on 256GB and 512GB models for the first time. The device is powered by Apple's A20 Pro chip and the N1 wireless chip, enabling Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. At 5.4mm thin and 255 grams, it's the lightest iPad Apple has made. It's also the first iPad with an IP67 water and dust resistance rating, aided by a new Acoustic Display that produces sound through the screen itself, so there are no speaker holes in the enclosure. A 12MP Center Stage front camera is now located on the landscape side for video calls, and the device supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). The display is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate with no ProMotion, which has been the main point of criticism in early reviews. In the United States, the new iPad mini starts at $699 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model. The 256GB and 512GB configurations are priced at $799 and $999, with nano-texture glass adding $100 on those models, while Wi-Fi + Cellular models start at $849. Education pricing starts at $649. M6 iMac Meanwhile, the new iMac is the first update to Apple's all-in-one since the M4 model. The M6 chip brings up to a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, with Apple claiming up to 2x faster graphics than the previous generation, alongside Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and an optional 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port on the power adapter. The iMac with M6 starts at $1,499 for the model with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, while the version with…

Rank 4226All-round upgrades fit a bigger OLED screen in a smaller and lighter body with water resistance for first time The new iPad mini takes Apple’s fan-favourite tiny tablet and upgrades just about everything about it, including giving it a new OLED screen, serious performance, speakers embedded into the display and even water resistance, all with a big new price tag. The eighth-generation iPad mini costs from £699 (€749/$699/A$1,099), which is £200 or equivalent more than the original price of its predecessor as RAMageddon continues to bite. That makes it uncomfortably expensive, costing £270 more than the base model iPad (A16) and only £50 cheaper than the bigger 11in iPad Air M4. Continue reading...

Rank 4235Anthropic today added Personal Finance to Claude, allowing users to connect their bank and card accounts for analysis. Claude has read-only access to accounts, and there is no option for it to move, manage, or invest money. Anthropic says Claude gives answers in everyday language and can explain unfamiliar financial terms. The feature can track spending across categories, upcoming bills, and out-of-the-ordinary purchases. It can look for unexpected fees, increasing bills, and subscriptions, plus it can create charts, calendars, and dashboards. Financial accounts are connected to Claude through the Plaid service, so Claude does not see bank passwords. Claude has access to the bank name, account name and type, balances and credit limits, and up to two years of transactions for bank accounts. Personal Finance chats are not used for model training and are not added to Claude's shared memory. OpenAI added a similar finance feature to ChatGPT back in May. Personal Finance is rolling out in beta on the Pro, Max, and Ultra plans in the United States. Rank 4240Tech industry fears delays to its multi-trillion dollar infrastructure buildout meant to power artificial intelligence Several newly elected Democrats and Senator Bernie Sanders have renewed calls for datacenter moratoriums in the days after the US midterm elections. The sweeping Democratic victory, which was buoyed in part by backlash to the tech industry, has added momentum to efforts to slow down the multi-trillion-dollar buildout of the controversial facilities. On the social media platform X, Sanders posted a call for an immediate national datacenter moratorium this week. “Americans don’t want Big Tech oligarchs wrecking the environment, gutting jobs and threatening humanity’s future,” Sanders said on Wednesday.
