Rank 2462The world has changed enormously since 2016, yet the pro-Brexiters believe remainers like me have no chance of achieving a closer relationship with the EU. I’m choosing to ignore them However sunny your disposition, it wears you down, 10 straight years of being asked to accept facts about Brexit that aren’t true: 52% as an “overwhelming majority”; a flaky, half-baked referendum as the endpoint of purest democracy; the severance of a complicated trading and geopolitical relationship that took decades to build as the dawn of a new prosperity. All such nonsense, all delivered with such conviction, by such a wide variety of sources, many of them self-describing as impartial, that in the end you just surrender to it. None of it magically becomes true, don’t be silly. It’s more that you come to accept that everyone else talks nonsense now. Nobody get too excited – just because Andy Burnham has reopened a debate that upside-down world said couldn’t be reopened, it doesn’t mean the UK is on the brink of coming to its senses. I have no idea what’s going to happen; all I can say for certain is that times have changed more than I realised. The pro-Brexit crew have updated their arguments. They no longer say leaving the EU will bring untold riches, and they never even namecheck all the control we were meant to have taken back. They rarely mention any immigration benefits because that unwieldy issue now has a life of its own – or, to put that more simply, it turns out that in or out of the European Union, we can still fight about our borders like rats in a sack. Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? Rank 2470Michael Carrick enjoyed one of his finest nights as a Manchester United player in the Champions League against Roma, scoring twice in a 7-1 win in the quarter-final, second leg in 2007. The re-run here was all about his managerial survival at the club. The situation looked impossibly grim for him at half-time. Amid an atmosphere of continued fan anger towards the United ownership, Carrick’s team had been implausibly bad. Roma took a 2-0 lead into the break and the truth was that the scoreline greatly flattered United. Continue reading...

McManus and his fellow owner, Paul Byrne, were among the attendees at the “Call Of The Card” luncheon, a A$340-a-head (£178) event in Melbourne on Monday, which has been a popular feature of the big-race buildup since 1958. Rank 2481English rugby league needs systemic change and national side must be a higher priority after early exit “England have gone backwards over the last eight to 10 years.” Damning words about the state of English rugby league, from an Australia head coach, no less. But what should be most troubling for anyone with any sort of power within the sport is that these comments are not recent: they were made by the then Kangaroos coach Ricky Stuart, almost two decades ago. Stuart was speaking after England’s men were beaten in the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup but, as the national team head home from the tournament once again, his stance still holds weight today. England have failed to make it to the last four for the first time, having failed to qualify from a farcical group-stage format. Continue reading...

Rank 2485The comedian turns 70 soon, and in her new book, she contemplates the years ahead. She explains why she loves a work in progress, the importance of anger in mourning, and how she gave up smoking – only to become a champion vaper Had Jo Brand, who turns 70 next year, been spending a long time thinking about getting older? Had it become the subject that consumed her, and the reason why, now, she felt impelled to write a book about the vagaries of ageing? No, she says, laughing. She was simply asked if she’d like to do it. Still, it encouraged introspection about what she wanted her future to look like. “Now’s the time, if you want things, to get them in place. I think a lot of people say, ‘I really want to do that, but I’ll forget it for now.’ And then they get to a stage where they can’t.” Does she mean bucket-list things? “No, I mean … what do I mean?” Brand pauses. “I mean the ability to perhaps end your own …” She doesn’t go there, but the end to that sentence is obviously: life. Rank 2496Dortmund did not read the script, remaining level on points with the defending champions at the top of the table It was the moment they had all been … not so much waiting for, but planning, pushing and yearning for. In the videos that announce the starting lineup on the giant scoreboard before kick-off, every Bayern Munich player turns to face the camera with their personal salute, greeting or goal celebration, the playful progression from the standard folding of arms. Except on Saturday evening, the No 9 turned around smiling, and cradling the golden trophy. In the midweek DFB Pokal stroll against Magdeburg there had been a salute, the players welcoming Harry Kane on to the pitch with a guard of honour to commemorate his Ballon d’Or victory two nights before. This, however, was the real party, the moment where the England captain’s and Bayern’s successful union and the apex it has reached was celebrated in front of a global audience. There was every reason to believe it would be a full and satisfying victory lap, even in Der Klassiker, with proper competition so often bringing the best out of the Rekordmeister. Rank 2497Written by Vicar of Dibley co-creator Paul Mayhew-Archer, who has the disease, Onwards and Sideways sees the actors play a couple who bond over their diagnoses – a devastating subject but laced with humour too, they say Ahead of production on their first job together, Rhys Ifans and Laura Linney didn’t undergo the standard “chemistry read” to make sure they got on. Which is remarkable, given what their characters would have to do to each other in Onwards and Sideways. In the Norfolk-set BBC film directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), Ifans would have to nearly throttle Linney while in the grip of night terrors, she’d have to collapse in his arms in a weeping mess having bankrupted herself with a gambling addiction; both situations arising from the neurological condition afflicting their characters: Parkinson’s disease. Rank 2499Timber’s shirt pull on Isak was not a penalty on review, and Madueke’s clash with Mac Allister was clearly not violent conduct There was one incident that got everyone talking at the weekend, and that was the decision not to award Liverpool a penalty in their match against Arsenal after Alexander Isak had his shirt pulled by Jurriën Timber as he tried to get his head to a Bradley Barcola cross. The on-field decision from the referee, Andy Madley, was no penalty and it was a call backed by the video assistant referee, Stuart Attwell. After the match the Liverpool head coach, Andoni Iraola, said there had been a “clear, clear pull” and when the footage is slowed down or freeze‑framed, that looks to be true. But at full speed, the contact appears minimal and not sustained: Timber is using one hand and tugs briefly on the shirt, and the impact on Isak’s movement is arguable. Continue reading...
