Rank 2060A witty creature feature set in a multi-occupancy building in Los Angeles that takes aim at unscrupulous landlords and finance bros This arachnid-themed horror is fairly traditional in terms of its structure, core monster threat and scares-to-laughs ratio, but there are a few winningly modern touches. For starters, there is a very contemporary anticapitalist undertow: it all takes place in a single multi-occupancy building (supposedly in Los Angeles, though the whole film was filmed in Portugal) owned by a slimy landlord (William Miller), who rails against the city’s “socialist” local council making it harder for him to rip off his tenants. And the tenants range across the spectrum of income levels and careers, in a way which is directly correlated to how sympathetic they are and therefore how likely to get spider-bit. So you shouldn’t get too attached any of the characters who work in finance, are “influencers”, or in any way act high and mighty towards the building’s long suffering supervisor Serena (Matilda Lutz), a tomboy-femme girl in shorts and biker boots who is also an aspiring musician. Serena is the one who finds the first victim, a UCLA professor in arachnology who is killed by an exotic spider which grows to extra-large proportions, from a colony ruled by a super-sized queen that appears semi-sentient. Rank 2067To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page The owners of world-renowned Blue Note Jazz Club have said opening their new London venue was ‘one of the hardest things they have done’ as the Mayor officially receives his new licensing powers. The club, which opened on St Martin’s Lane, Covent Garden, in September, had to battle against multiple complaints and licensing rejections from the public and the police. This is despite the fact they own 10 successful venues across the world, including in Milan, Los Angeles and Tokyo. Their founding venue in New York is also regarded as one the world’s most famous jazz clubs. But opening in London ‘proved to be their hardest’. The director of music, Nick Lewis, told Metro: ‘It absolutely was a struggle trying to open. Initially, they gave us an 11pm closing time, which is too early as the nature of jazz is always geared toward late performances. ‘Through a long appeal process, we eventually managed to secure a 1am closing time. With this we can run two shows a night and balance the books. But ideally we would be going until 3am.’ Secretary of Communities and Local Government Angela Rayner (right) with Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Director of Music for Blue Note Jazz Club Nick Lewis (Picture: Greater London Authority) In February 2025, Metro reported the club’s opening had received a number of odd complaints. One resident said jazz lovers may be ‘disoriented’ by leaving the venue when it is cold at night, while another said the venue ‘could be a magnet for phone thieves’. The Metropolitan Police, opposing the opening, said its proposed 1am closing time was far too late as it could ‘expose more people to crime and disorder’. Mr Lewis said: ‘Reading through all those complaints was hard. There was one point where we all thought “it really feels like we are not wanted here”.’ The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan officially…

Rank 2074New tournament is designed to provide a context that was apparently lacking in the legendary clashes of the past It was a loose kick, tumbling aimlessly end over end into the All Blacks’ half. Their wing Billy Wallace gathered it and sprinted into midfield, through a gap and on into the Welsh half, only their full-back ahead of him now, and with his teammate Bob Deans in the corner of his eye, coming on the inside calling for the ball. Wallace gave the pass and Deans was away, making straight for the posts, tackled at the last moment by Rhys Gabe, and the two of them went sliding for the try‑line together. The ball finished in the tips of Deans’s fingers, at the end of his outstretched arm. Over the line? On the line? Inches away from the line? Continue reading...

Rank 2081Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! Considering they’d just gone nine games without a win, assorted Manchester United fans carping about the manner of their team’s Bigger Cup win over Roma on shouty radio phone-ins on Tuesday night struck Football Daily as the type who’d complain about a firefighter refusing to wipe their boots at the front door before rescuing them from a burning house. Yes, it’s true that United played appallingly in the first half and were lucky to be only 2-0 down. And yes, the penalty was somewhat fortuitous against a knack-ravaged Serie A side who have form in coughing up two-goal leads in the competition. However, when your once mighty side has spent the opening months of the season looking more like a broken washing machine full of spanners falling down an escalator than an elite football team, complaining about the artistic merit of a highly unlikely comeback win seems unnecessarily churlish, even if Matheus Cunha’s celebration of the winner was a little over the top. Roma managed to capitulate to Manchester United while being 2-0 up. Even Man Utd haven’t managed to do that too many times but I wouldn’t describe their second half performance as ‘a comeback for the ages’. Their opponents just didn’t turn up” – Nigel Sanders. These suggestions of paper and velcro shirts seem overly complicated. (yesterday’s Football Daily letters). If teams would just commit to using body paint instead of clothing, the foul becomes impossible to commit unless a defender is possessed of both long fingernails and a cavalier disregard for the health of their opponent. Also, no more tedious yellow cards for removing the shirt after a goal. Win win” – Ben Mimmack. Poor Nuno can take comfort that he’s in a long list of managers seen off by a poor result against West Brom since 2010, including Chris Hughton twice and five others. If you add Roberto di Matteo (he clung on for one more game) and spoiling Alex Ferguson’s leaving do with a 5-5 draw…

Rank 2082What did the Romans ever give Scotland? Heated floors, flashy sandals, sun gods – and a lot of nailsFrom steamy bathhouses to altars to Sol the sun god and leather shoes that still survive to this day, an eye-opening new exhibition chronicles Scotland under the Romans (before they fled) Inveresk is a handsome village near Edinburgh that sits above a curve of the little river Esk, not far from the mighty Firth of Forth. It is full of elegant 18th-century houses and an attractive kirk, dated 1805. To the casual observer, there is absolutely nothing Roman about it. And yet, in 2010, when the local cricket pavilion was being rebuilt, an extraordinary find was made – two altars made of local sandstone, lying on their sides, evidently deliberately buried in the Roman era, dedicated to the gods Mithras and Sol. They had been made in the 140s CE as part of a mithraeum, a temple devoted to the worship of Mithras, a cult dependent on secret ritual and complex initiation ceremonies, much beloved by the Roman military. Carved from sandstone quarried nearby, the altars were impressive in scale and finely made, although terribly fragile. Continue reading...
