Rank 1558Banwell, in North Somerset, has struggled with heavy traffic for decades (Picture: Tom Wren/SWNS) Britain’s longest-running road project has been delayed yet again, meaning residents will have to wait more than 100 years for a bypass first proposed in 1927. Banwell, in North Somerset, has struggled with heavy traffic for generations, with congestion making the village centre a nightmare for drivers and residents. Plans for a bypass were first put forward almost a century ago, but the scheme was only finally approved in 2023. Now, a further six-month delay to water main diversion work means the road is not expected to open until later in 2027, rather than the planned summer completion. The project was initially backed with £56million in government funding through Homes England, but its cost has since risen to more than £105million after the original contractor pulled out. Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's News Updates newsletter or get Breaking News alerts the moment it happens. North Somerset Council says the water main work must be completed before construction can progress, as the project involves extensive ground improvements, including piling. Britain’s longest-running road project has been delayed yet again (Picture: Tom Wren/SWNS) Residents of Banwell will have to wait more than 100 years for a bypass first proposed in 1927 (Picture: Tom Wren/SWNS) The latest delay has frustrated residents who have spent decades waiting for traffic to be taken away from their village. Steve Voller, chairman of Banwell Parish Council, said: ‘This delay extends the inconvenience and stress to those that live in the village and for anyone trying to get through it – especially at peak times.’ He also raised concerns about the impact of congestion on emergency services, saying he had seen an ambulance turn around because the village centre was at a standstill. North Somerset Council leader Mike Bell said work was still…

Rank 1559The cost of checking your coat or bag is galloping ahead of other – also rising – prices at venues. We explain the surprisingly complex reasons why Not long ago, it cost just £2 to put a coat or a heavily stuffed tote bag in a cloakroom on a night out. But over the course of the 2020s, that cost has increased to more than £13 in some UK venues. At the Outernet Live venue complex in London’s Soho, it costs £11 to put a bag in a large locker. It’s £9 at east London nightclub Fold, and if you want to retrieve something, you’ll need to pay again. At north London’s Drumsheds, the UK’s biggest nightclub, they cost up to £13.20 (though they’re reusable with no extra fee). At the Warehouse Project in Manchester, large bags must be stored at a nearby Premier Inn at £11.99 per locker. Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena has a dedicated bag storage facility which costs £15 for large bags. It’s £9.99 near the 3,000-capacity Edinburgh Playhouse and £9.90 at Testbed in Leeds. How have double-digit cloakroom costs like these been normalised? Continue reading...

Rank 1561It is getting ever harder for Eurosceptics to deny that it was an economic and strategic blunder for Britain to leave the single market The EU is a constantly evolving institution. The rules keep changing and, since Britain is destined by geography to want a close economic relationship with the bloc, there will always be something to negotiate in Brussels. Most of those discussions over the past two years have been uncontroversial, except in the eyes of dogmatic Eurosceptics. That doesn’t mean the talks have been easy. They never are with a club of 27 nations. But later this month, at a summit with the EU commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, Andy Burnham is expected to complete a treaty covering closer cooperation in a wide range of areas, including elimination of customs barriers to agricultural goods, a youth-mobility programme and integration with the EU’s carbon emissions trading scheme. Of the two men who died, one has reportedly been identified as Alexander Maximilian Theiss, 57, who was a German national. He was thought to be on a layover while working with Lufthansa. The company has since confirmed the death of a crew member in an accident in Bengaluru. The other is believed to be Slovak national Juraj Horvat, 45, who worked as a project manager for IBM, according to police. Two other men at the Conrad Hotel pool were injured while attempting to save the men and have since been taken to Manipal Hospital. The men were killed at the Conrad Hotel in Bengaluru (Picture: REUTERS) Mathew Desantis, 41, a hotel guest from the US and Rahul Tiwari, 28, a local pool attendant employed by the hotel, are both said to be out of danger. While attempts were made by emergency services to save the men, Theiss died before arriving at hospital, and Horvat died while doctors tried to revive him. Theiss’ wife has filed a police complaint alleging negligence by the hotel management when it came to maintaining the pool, according to NDTV. It claims the men suffered an electric shock while leaving the pool, which resulted in their drowning. The hotel, which is part of the Hilton group, has closed the area for maintenance for the rest of the month, as stated on their website. Rank 1576John Aloisi’s side need a point on the final day to seal their maiden title – but their form has dropped off a cliff With four games of the Chinese Super League to go, Chengdu Rongcheng needed just a point to clinch their first title. With one game to go, they still need a point. What was a formality has become a formidable task. The biggest bottle job in Asian football history is very much on and it would be as popular as it would be dramatic. The coach of the Sichuan club, the former Portsmouth and Coventry striker John Aloisi, has seen a 12-point lead over Dalian Yingbo cut to just three before Sunday’s showdowns. Whatever happens, this is a positive and thrilling end to a season that started negatively – literally – with nine of the 16 top-tier clubs kicking off on minus points. They had been punished as part of a “special campaign to crack down on match-fixing, gambling and corruption in the football industry”, said a joint statement from the Chinese Football Association, the Ministry of Public Security and the General Administration of Sport at the time. Rank 1579Credit to Arsenal for restricting opportunities at Anfield but Iraola will need his side to learn to unpick low backlines Liverpool did not have a shot on target in their 1-0 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday, according to Opta, the first time they have drawn this type of blank in a Premier League game at Anfield since records began in 2003-04. They did not find the target in a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium this year either, though in both games they struck the woodwork. The margins tend to be fine when recording statistical outliers. If Alexis Mac Allister’s floated ball from distance into David Raya’s waiting arms had actually counted as a shot, would Andoni Iraola’s side have delivered a markedly better attacking performance? Far more concerning for the Spaniard will be that his team had 52 touches in the Arsenal penalty area (which is good) to create only one Opta‑defined big chance (which is bad). The Premier League average this season is five times more efficient; 10.3 box touches per big chance. Continue reading...

Rank 1581There were protests at Old Trafford and even though two academy products stood out, Michael Carrick’s future is far from safe Green and yellow balloons bobbed around the Stretford End. Tennis balls rained down on the pitch in protest at the chronic, enduringly cinematic decline presided over by Manchester United’s ownership. Then came a reminder of the humble football’s extraordinary power to bend history, minds and wills. United’s players departed victorious having somehow won the game within the game, separating themselves from the fog of unhappy context swirling on all sides and turning the second half into its own soaring, ripping story for the ages. Will it be enough to save Michael Carrick, who was once again serenaded when minds wandered from the joint scourges of the Glazer family and Jim Ratcliffe? If Aston Villa defend a shade more competently than Roma on Sunday then perhaps not. United have led their supporters, remarkable in their tenor of backing for players and head coach here, up more than enough false peaks over the past 13 years. Arguably, that is one reason for Carrick being given the job on a permanent basis. Continue reading...

Rank 1584Brahms’ first symphony was 21 years in the making. It was well worth the wait. Also, today, why Ivan Fischer and the Berlin Phil have parted company over a seating arrangement By any reckoning, 21 years is a very long gestation period. Beethoven wrote his first eight symphonies (and was stuck into the ninth) in less time. But it’s how long it took Brahms to complete his First Symphony. He initially sketched it in the mid-1850s, in his 20s, and he was 43 by the time it was premiered, exactly 150 years ago on 4 November 1876 in Karlsruhe. Earlier that summer had seen the premiere of Wagner’s Ring cycle in Bayreuth – another project that had taken more than 20 years to bring to fruition. But in contrast to the 15 hours and four operas of the Ring, all Brahms had to do was compose four movements, lasting about 45 minutes in performance. Why did it take him so long? Continue reading...
