It’s steamed pudding season again, and there are few better ways to serve it than with hot chocolate sauce and a scoop of ice-cream This is the best time of the year for proper stodge, and an even better time to make steamed puddings. I adore them – you get the best texture and a pudding that feels like a big hug – so find it a shame they’re not more popular these days. I’ve gone for individual portions, because they steam more quickly and everyone gets their own. Drown them in hot chocolate sauce and serve with a splash of cold cream or a scoop of ice-cream. In this week’s newsletter: From wonky electronic production to painfully earnest lyrics, a new wave of artists are embracing nostalgia, cute vibes and DIY pop If you’d told me back in January that one of my favourite tracks of 2026 would count noughties new rave outfit Hadouken! and goofy Kesha parodists The Midnight Beast among its influences, I would have looked at you skeptically, at the very least. I’m all for the nostalgic reappropriation of the most neglected and deeply uncool relics of pop music past, but these particular reference points would have seemed like a step too far. I would have been very wrong. The Ballad of St Nick’s Park by 300SkullsAndCounting (AKA Leamington Spa native Hal Hewetson) and his collaborator Jenny Sparks is one of the most unexpected and addictive songs I’ve heard in years. It’s also not as much of an outlier as it might initially seem; the pair’s album This Is Spa Town! is part of a new sound that was last year christened “laptop twee”. Other affiliates of the largely British scene include Bassvictim, an electronica duo made up of Goldsmiths alumni Ike Clateman and Maria Manow, and Worldpeace DMT (pictured, top), AKA Leo Fincham and Rowan Miles (also a member of the similarly minded Femcels), whose work a Guardian critic recently compared to that of kooky early 2010s indie outfit Darwin Deez. Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! Considering they’d just gone nine games without a win, assorted Manchester United fans carping about the manner of their team’s Bigger Cup win over Roma on shouty radio phone-ins on Tuesday night struck Football Daily as the type who’d complain about a firefighter refusing to wipe their boots at the front door before rescuing them from a burning house. Yes, it’s true that United played appallingly in the first half and were lucky to be only 2-0 down. And yes, the penalty was somewhat fortuitous against a knack-ravaged Serie A side who have form in coughing up two-goal leads in the competition. However, when your once mighty side has spent the opening months of the season looking more like a broken washing machine full of spanners falling down an escalator than an elite football team, complaining about the artistic merit of a highly unlikely comeback win seems unnecessarily churlish, even if Matheus Cunha’s celebration of the winner was a little over the top. Roma managed to capitulate to Manchester United while being 2-0 up. Even Man Utd haven’t managed to do that too many times but I wouldn’t describe their second half performance as ‘a comeback for the ages’. Their opponents just didn’t turn up” – Nigel Sanders. These suggestions of paper and velcro shirts seem overly complicated. (yesterday’s Football Daily letters). If teams would just commit to using body paint instead of clothing, the foul becomes impossible to commit unless a defender is possessed of both long fingernails and a cavalier disregard for the health of their opponent. Also, no more tedious yellow cards for removing the shirt after a goal. Win win” – Ben Mimmack. Poor Nuno can take comfort that he’s in a long list of managers seen off by a poor result against West Brom since 2010, including Chris Hughton twice and five others. If you add Roberto di Matteo (he clung on for one more game) and spoiling Alex Ferguson’s leaving do with a 5-5 draw…

From steamy bathhouses to altars to Sol the sun god and leather shoes that still survive to this day, an eye-opening new exhibition chronicles Scotland under the Romans (before they fled) Inveresk is a handsome village near Edinburgh that sits above a curve of the little river Esk, not far from the mighty Firth of Forth. It is full of elegant 18th-century houses and an attractive kirk, dated 1805. To the casual observer, there is absolutely nothing Roman about it. And yet, in 2010, when the local cricket pavilion was being rebuilt, an extraordinary find was made – two altars made of local sandstone, lying on their sides, evidently deliberately buried in the Roman era, dedicated to the gods Mithras and Sol. They had been made in the 140s CE as part of a mithraeum, a temple devoted to the worship of Mithras, a cult dependent on secret ritual and complex initiation ceremonies, much beloved by the Roman military. Carved from sandstone quarried nearby, the altars were impressive in scale and finely made, although terribly fragile. Continue reading...

Robbie Williams has thrown some shade at Olivia Rodrigo for her new song (Picture: Getty/INTERSCOPE RECORDS/TNI PRESS LTD) In the pop beef we never saw coming, Robbie Williams has clocked Olivia Rodrigo for her Christmas song’s similarities to his iconic hit. It’s that time of year when artists drop their festive remixes or brand new Santa-themed tracks in hopes of landing a new Christmas classic. Former Glastonbury headliner Olivia is no different, with her latest single Take Me Home (4 Christmas) now vying for a place on those annual playlists. In the music video, the Lacy singer dances around with Sex and the City’s Cynthia Nixon and sings about how she’s hoping to impress her new boyfriend’s family over the holidays. However, comparisons to other songs quickly erupted. While some said it bears a resemblance to The Waitresses’ ChristmasWrapping from 1981, others heard the upbeat melody of Robbie’s Candy. It seems Robbie can also hear the similarities, as he cheekily tagged Olivia on X, wishing her a ‘happy Christmas’. Fans had pointed out the similarity between Take Me Home (4 Christmas) and Candy (Picture: Robbie Williams) Candy, written by Robbie and Gary Barlow, was released in 2012 and has an interpolation of Eurodans by Terje Olsen. The song has gone on to become his second biggest hit after Angels. The former Take That star never quite broke America, but Olivia’s love for British music is no secret. Officially, Take Me Home (4 Christmas) credits the Good 4 U singer and Amy Allen, as well as long-time collaborator Dan Nigro, as songwriters. She did, however, reach out to Christmas Wrapping writer Chris Butler before the song was released, as it is intended as a homage. Chris, who led the 1980s new wave band The Waitresses, shared on Facebook that he initially thought the email from her was fake. ‘About two months ago, I received a weird email from someone claiming to be Olivia Rodrigo,’ he wrote. ‘It was filled [with] Waitresses gush, and…

Surprise yourself with the flavours in this roast beetroot spiked with pickled raisins and salty blue cheese It’s not uncommon for people to form negative relationships with certain vegetables as a consequence of only ever having had them boiled to disintegration, a blunt approach that’s unlikely to bring out the best in any of us. Beetroot, especially, are vastly improved by being roasted instead, because that way they cook gently in their own juices. Not only does this much improve their texture, but it concentrates their innate, earthy richness, rather than leaching out of them. Beetroot’s high level of natural sweetness makes it a perfect foil for sharp dressings and even sharper cheeses.
