What used to be a time to reset is now a time to rehire, and Michael Carrick is not the only Premier League manager looking over his shoulder Perhaps the most telling moment of Manchester United’s comeback against Roma was at the final whistle. The camera focused on Michael Carrick, who shook the hand of Gian Piero Gasperini before looking around trying to remember what you’re meant to do after a victory. The camera then cut to the director of football, Jason Wilcox, and chief executive, Omar Berrada, clapping with two of the most ashen faces you could imagine – as if it was a minute’s applause in the 87th minute for a lifelong octogenarian fan who died peacefully in his sleep earlier in the week (most probably not at a United game but you couldn’t rule it out). Of course there are rules about smiling when you are involved with a failing football club. Players can’t be seen to be enjoying themselves in the week after a defeat, managers have to be earnest at almost all times, apart from when a journalist’s phone goes off at a press conference – a moment of sporting hilarity on a par with a pigeon landing on Centre Court. I wanted to be a beacon of black feminist love; my friends and family teased me for being a sellout We had been together 20 years, had two children and had a customary marriage with our village sub-county two years ago without any real plans for a church wedding. So we called our second ceremony a celebration of love and not a wedding. How else would a self-professed African feminist survive being the centre of a colonial and Abrahamic religious ceremony that also manages to reinforce the most male-centred aspects of African culture? Our invitations came directly from me and my partner Mark, not – as is traditional – from our families, and in the form of a playful gif featuring the song Love Potion from the South African group Mafikizolo, a reminder that this was a wedding on our terms. I thought they screamed “liberated African feminist”. But when my cousin Moses received his, he asked, “So, the patriarchy has won?” Continue reading...

Nicole Kidman and her mini-me daughter just attended a fashion show in Australia (Picture: Monica Schipper/Getty Images) Nicole Kidman touched down in Sydney this week for Chanel’s first Australian runway show. But instead of attending solo — it’s been over a year since she and ex-husband Keith Urban split — the Oscar winner was accompanied by her youngest daughter, Faith Margaret. The mother-daughter duo rocked up to the event in monochromatic looks, with 15-year-old Faith donning a classic cream Chanel skirt suit. Meanwhile, Nicole coordinated in a cropped black tuxedo jacket over a simple white tank, complete with high-waisted tailored trousers. Later, the pair were seen in more casual fits (albeit still repping the monochromatic aesthetic) at Sydney Airport as they departed following the show. Faith looked cool in an all-white ensemble, which included linen trousers, a fitted vest and trainers, as Nicole kept things chic in black jeans and a leather jacket. Nicole and Faith were spotted at Sydney Airport (Picture: matrixpictures.com.au) Nicole and Faith’s appearance at the show, which also included other high-profile Australian guests, including Kylie Minogue and Margot Robbie, was a rare sighting for fans. This is because, over the last year, Faith’s sister, Sunday Rose, 18, has tended to be Nicole’s date. Sunday Rose has already made a name for herself in the modelling world, having landed campaigns and runway walks for the likes of Miu Miu, Dior, and Calvin Klein. This month, the 18-year-old even bagged the Vogue Germany cover in a Louis Vuitton look. So, it makes sense that she’s been showing her face more at such events. However, after spotting Faith out and about at major fashion events with her mother (Nicole is actually a Chanel ambassador), it wouldn’t be surprising if the teen were to launch her own modelling career in the near future. Faith is rarely seen compared to her older sister, Sunday Rose (Picture: matrixpictures.com.au) After…

(Vertigo) Devastating moments are dressed up with warm production and kinetic 00s R&B in the now quiff-less singer’s grownup fourth album Over the six years that La Roux, AKA Elly Jackson, was making her fourth album, the singer ended a 17-year relationship, confronted her weed dependency, received autism and ADHD diagnoses and lopped off her signature Johnny Bravo-esque quiff. One might expect the resulting record to be meditative and maudlin; the opening songs Cabin Fever and Lose Myself, focused on poor mental health and addiction respectively, suggest it will be fraught and claustrophobic. The former’s suffocating bass and unsteady synths segue into the latter’s unnerving nursery rhyme-like verses and thrashing chorus, reminiscent of the crunchier elements of HIStory-era Michael Jackson. What follows, though, is an autopsy of a relationship delivered through kinetic turn-of-the-millennium R&B and 90s-indebted pop. Jackson resists melodrama and, even at its most devastating, the songs are dressed up with enticing hooks and warm production. “Feels like you’re slipping right out of my life,” she admits on To Make Our Love, though the song bounces along like Ace of Base’s All That She Wants, while Night Vision, despite its crushing lyrics – “you keep building me up and then letting me go” – recalls the top-down breeziness of Mariah Carey’s Heartbreaker. Brian Devine, 38, banned from all cricket for two years Saltburn 2nd XI relegated and club fined by ECB The club cricketer dubbed “Clicky Ponting” in response to accusations of cheating during the English summer has been handed a two-year ban from the sport. His team, Saltburn CC’s 2nd XI, have also been relegated. Brian Devine earned online notoriety back in July after footage from Division Two of the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League went viral. In the clip, Devine was seen clicking his fingers in the field and successfully tricking the umpire into believing a Norton CC batter had edged a catch behind. Devine is now banned from all cricket under the auspices of the England and Wales Cricket Board until the end of the 2028 season. The ban covers “playing, coaching, umpiring, scoring and managing junior teams”. After an appeal against their sanction, Saltburn CC have been fined £300 and their 2nd XI has been relegated to Division Three of the NYSDCL. The 2nd XI will also start the 2027 season with 60-point deduction, while previously relegated Middlesbrough CC have retained their place in Division Two. Continue reading...
