Rank 6051Of course an Italian chef would rather be sacked than make this. Defending our food against such blasphemy makes us feel like better people Luca Cesari is a food historian and author of The History of Pizza You may have smiled at the news a few days ago: the Italian chef Davide Tamburella was sacked by a Brisbane restaurant after refusing to put pineapple on a pizza. Never mind that Queensland grows almost all of Australia’s pineapples. Tamburella would not give way to his customers or his boss, insisting that the combination was an insult to Italian culture. Strange as it may sound, he is not the first. In 2017, Maurizio Landi, a chef from Bologna, was sacked by a bistro near Lyon after resisting pressure to cook his pasta for longer and to serve spaghetti bolognese, a dish that does not exist in his home town. For anyone who doesn’t know, Bologna is the only city in the world where ragù is eaten solely with tagliatelle, and putting it on spaghetti borders on an outrage. Luca Cesari is a food historian and the author of The History of Pizza Continue reading...

Rank 6077Glamorous star of 1960s films best known for her role opposite Peter Sellers in A Shot in the Dark Like Ingrid Bergman and Sophia Loren, the German actor Elke Sommer was part of the postwar crossover wave of European stars who pepped up the tail end of the Hollywood studio era. Sommer, who has died aged 85, matched them for glamour but not dramatic prestige. Her sex-kitten image gave her a decade in the limelight playing exotic continental paramours for leading men and glamorous assassins in the 1960s. With her beehive hairdo and an upturned nose she was initially self-conscious about, Sommer brought freshness and gameness to her most celebrated role: as Maria Gambrelli, the maid whom Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau goes out of his way to exonerate of murder in the 1964 comedy A Shot in the Dark. In the words of the trailer: “Number one sexpot, I mean suspect.” Continue reading...

Rank 6087To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page Big Brother’s most controversial winner has received a reception she’ll certainly never forget, after furious audience members effectively hijacked her victory interview. Rochelle Rackham, 57, was crowned champion of the ITV reality series on Thursday night, beating fan favourite Lucinda ‘Twinks’ Burnett to the £100,000 prize following eight weeks of arguments, accusations and increasingly bitter divisions both inside and outside the house. But while the public vote may have gone Rochelle’s way, the audience gathered for the live final seemed to have different ideas about who deserved the crown. The moment quickly descended into chaos as deafening boos drowned out presenters AJ Odudu and Will Best, who struggled to get through their interview with the newly crowned winner. The pair repeatedly attempted to calm the increasingly unruly crowd, but their pleas fell on deaf ears as audience members continued booing, with some chanting ‘Twinks should have won’ and others demanding a ‘recount’. At one point, Will was forced to address the crowd directly, pleading: ‘Guys, guys, she can’t hear us speak.’ Rochelle’s victory was met with deafening boos from the live audience (Picture: Shutterstock for Big Brother) His efforts did little to improve matters, with AJ eventually admitting: ‘We’re going to have to shout.’ Despite the hostile reception, Rochelle managed to reflect on her victory, declaring: ‘All the suffering was worth it.’ Clips of the extraordinary scenes soon circulated on social media, where viewers were left stunned by what some described as an unprecedented moment in the show’s history. ‘This is the most chaotic moment in Big Brother history,’ one fan declared. ‘Never seen anything like that lmao interview completely hijacked,’ another agreed. A third wrote: ‘The fact that’s a winner’s interview is wild…
