Rank 5854The Warriors’ freshman has spent his first weeks in the NBA antagonizing superstars, speaking his mind and emerging as one of the league’s most compelling personalities If a screen-addled pickup basketball player teleported into the body of a high-level athlete, they might resemble Yaxel Lendeborg. The most commonly cited fact about Lendeborg is that he used to spend 12 to 14 hours a day gaming, and didn’t debut on his high school basketball team until he was an upperclassman. Professional athletes often have origin stories that resemble the superhero more than the mortal, but Lendeborg really was just like us at one point. Lendeborg has also said that prior to entering the NBA, he didn’t really watch it, either. The Puerto Rican forward racked up more than enough accolades in college to qualify for the NBA, but still. Any of you reading this could smoke the man who may be this season’s rookie of the year in trivia about his profession. The 24-year-old Lendeborg is a forward on the Golden State Warriors, a team caught between the ancient, gleaming remnants of the most fearsome dynasty of the 2010s and its future. The balance didn’t work out last season, as the Warriors produced flashes of old greatness to win one play-in game before flaming out in the next. Such results are a frustrating waste of Stephen Curry’s wonderful form even at 38 years old. Lendeborg is the best hope in a while to help maximize it. But even more importantly, Lendeborg is the character of the season so far. He’s spent its first two weeks antagonizing superstars, firing off unselfconscious takes in the press and vacuuming up the spotlight from his blander peers. What a joy to bear witness to an athlete who probably didn’t even hear the words “media training” until college. Continue reading...

John Lewis’s syrupy commercials featuring piano ballads and tearjerker storylines have given the 160-year-old department store a cultural head start in the dash for festive profits. This year, however, there’s one high-street rival with a sackful of tricks to make up the ground. Rank 5867Using some of the most advanced ultralight materials the world has at its disposal, Japanese outdoor gear brand Field Record offers the lightest freestanding tent we've ever seen. Its FR-SCD tent weighs less than half of what some other ultralight backpacking and mountaineering tents weigh, going so light as to undercut many pole-free, non-freestanding shelters. Whether scaling cloud-engulfed granite or emerging out the belly of dense jungle to enjoy camping on untouched tropical beach, the FR-SCD is the tent that will carry like air before bedding down into a cocoon-like shelter. Rank 5878James Stewart told his uncle he would stab him before threatening others (Picture: Getty) A grandson who turned up armed and threatened to stab mourners at his grandmother’s wake has been jailed for 15 months. James Stewart, 27, pulled out a screwdriver and told his uncle he was going to stab him, before telling others he would ‘shank them and cut them up.’ Perth Sheriff Court was told that Stewart had missed the funeral because he had been arrested for an earlier incident and was in custody at the time. He was released in time to attend the wake, but an hour after it started, he lost money, and his mood dramatically changed. He and his friend Orin Lambert left the event and came back a short time later with the screwdriver and made a series of threats. Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's News Updates newsletter or get Breaking News alerts the moment it happens. Solicitor Alan Davie, defending, said: ‘He had been going through a fairly difficult time. One of the ways he tried to deal with his problems was through drink and drugs. ‘That’s clearly had an impact on his regulation of his emotions. He wasn’t at the funeral, but he was at the wake. He wasn’t at the funeral as a consequence of being in custody. ‘He was slightly upset at missing the funeral. He had had a drink. He came into contact with the co-accused, and drugs were taken before they attended the wake. ‘A lot of people were drinking. When Mr Stewart and his co-accused came back, they were not met with a great deal of enthusiasm by anyone. There was an altercation with his uncle. ‘He made the active decision to arm himself before heading back, and he’s aware how seriously the court will deal with these matters. He’s something of a Jekyll and Hyde character.’ Police were called to the scene after he initially left because there was an ongoing disturbance. When he and Lambert returned with the screwdriver, the police were still there, so he issued several…

Rank 5881It’s 20 years since Jo and Richard Hill bought anything in Rotherham city centre. Why have they and so many locals abandoned it for the nearest retail park – and what would it take to change their minds? On 22 May 1987, retail history was made in Rotherham. Parkgate Retail World, thought at the time to be the UK’s largest open-air shopping centre, welcomed shoppers for some one-stop retail therapy. The official opening was marked in swanky fashion with a “breathtaking” display from Marlboro’s red-and-white branded biplanes, followed by a “spectacular” laser show, the first in South Yorkshire. Helen Worth – Coronation Street’s Gail Platt – cut the ribbon before jovial local people jostled to fill their car boots with goods from Comet, Jolly Giant and Poundstretcher. Almost 40 years on, the razzle is a bit less dazzling. Parkgate, as the retail park is called now, looks like any large big-box outdoor shopping centre you might find on urban fringes. There’s a Primark, a Sports Direct and a Matalan, plus (of course) a Frankie & Benny’s. Shoppers still seem to love it. “I think it’s ideal. It’s got everything here,” says Robert Gordon. The 66-year-old retired factory production manager had popped to Pets at Home to get a cupcake and toy for his dog Bruno’s fourth birthday. Continue reading...

Rank 5887You have probably performed a sandwich assay before, even if you didn't know it. Sandwich assays are the molecular sensing technology behind lateral flow tests like the at-home COVID test. After a sample is dripped onto the test strip, it combines with detector antibodies attached to tiny gold particles, which bind to any viral proteins present. When the sample reaches the test line, a second antibody anchored to the strip binds to a different site on the viral protein, creating a molecular "sandwich." As the gold particles accumulate, the test line turns dark red, becoming visible to the naked eye.

Rank 5892How can we efficiently collect light returning from tissues while also identifying what it tells us about blood flow in the deeper tissues? Conventional interferometric near-infrared spectroscopy (iNIRS) can distinguish signals according to the amount of time that light takes to travel through tissue, but it collects only a few photons. Camera-based systems capture many more photons, but this distinction is not realized when living tissue changes rapidly. Researchers associated with ICTER combined both approaches in a hybrid system. They showed that an appropriately analyzed camera signal can reproduce the blood-flow response observed with iNIRS for late-arriving photons, which are more sensitive to deeper tissues.

Rank 5897Investigating a scientific question is often a complex process. As an astrophysicist studying some of the most energetic phenomena in the universe, I know that finding answers requires much more than reading scientific papers or understanding existing theories. Astrophysical research involves collecting observations, analyzing data, building physical models and comparing their predictions with observations. These tasks require different scientific tools, databases and modeling software and can take considerable time even for experienced researchers.

Rank 5900This slightly preposterous psychological drama – featuring Byrne and Meghann Fahy as sisters – is a show about trauma where everyone somehow looks astonishingly beautiful at all times At first glance, The Good Daughter (Thursday 12 November, 9pm, Sky Atlantic) should make you a little worried about Rose Byrne. Here is an actor not only at the top of her game, but quite frankly at the top of anybody’s. Her Apple TV show Platonic all but depends on her combination of emotional nuance and flawless slapstick to exist, and earlier this year she won a Golden Globe (and was nominated for an Oscar) for her wired, frayed lead performance in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. In other words, Byrne should be able to make anything she wants. So it’s bizarre that, of all things, she has chosen this. The Good Daughter is a paperback thriller show. It’s one of those slightly preposterous programmes about trauma where everyone somehow manages to look astonishingly beautiful all the time. It’s David E Kelley territory. It’s Harlan Coben territory. It’s Nicole Kidman in a silly wig territory. Continue reading...
