Arsenal defender William Saliba (Picture: Getty) William Saliba will get minutes for Arsenal’s Under-21 side on Sunday after missing out on the matchday squad against Hull City. Saliba is yet to play a minute of competitive football this season after suffering a back injury at the World Cup. But the Frenchman has now returned to first-team training and was named on the bench for the Champions League clash against Slavia Prague on Wednesday. Despite that, Saliba was not named in the matchday squad for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Hull at the Emirates. Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhaes will continue their impressive partnership at the centre of defence, with Mikel Arteta confirming that Saliba will instead feature for the U21s against Aston Villa on Sunday. ‘He needs some minutes,’ the Gunners boss said pre-match. ‘Obviously, the Champions League allows you to bring more players into the bench, but we believe that it’s the best thing to do, to play some minutes on the weekend with the Under-21s and then be fully fit for the international break.’ Saliba is due to play for Arsenal’s Under-21 side over the weekend (Picture: Getty) Speaking on Friday, Arteta confirmed that Saliba was available to be called up by France for their two Nations League matches over the international break. ‘They have all the information,’ he said. ‘Now it’s about them, about Zinedine in this case to make the call. We will accept whatever it is. I think it’s something between them. ‘Willy needs minutes as well. I know how much he loves to be in the national team. ‘It’s a new manager, a really exciting one as well, so whatever he has decided is fine for us.’ Zinedine Zidane, however, opted against calling up the Arsenal star into his second squad as France manager, meaning Saliba will stay in north…

Worn by Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, Andy Burnham and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, fashion experts say the look radiates authority and no-nonsense masculinity For years the black T-shirt was consigned to the clothing category of plain basics. A hidden layer rather than the main event. But modern politics has pushed it to the frontlines as a sartorial shortcut to signal power. The progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who this week became the first Muslim elected to the US Senate in history, made a tight black T-shirt his signature look throughout his year-long campaign trail. Styling it with jeans and friendship bracelets made by his children, El-Sayed described his attire as “minimal look, maximal politics”. Continue reading...

The actor’s triumphant breakthrough has clear ancestors in grimy tales of working-class struggle, but finds a fresh, rousing idealism Peter Farrelly’s new film I Play Rocky is about the underdog-with-heart story of how a great boxing movie got made against the odds with its plucky young untried screenwriter allowed to star. So here is a reissue of that 1976 film for its 50th anniversary. It’s a forthright, rousingly idealistic film, wholesome in its essential patriotism, and which unselfconsciously shrugs off the boxing-movie’s gloomy generic inheritance, throwing away its grim traditional baggage of tragedy, cynicism and loss. It also doubles as a love letter to Philadelphia, the cradle of American democracy. Its writer and insurgent star Sylvester Stallone created the role of Rocky Balboa, a punchy heavyweight fighter just turned 30, making peanuts slugging it out with bums and reduced to collecting debts for the Philly mob; this is an indignity which infuriates his grizzled old trainer and former mentor Mickey (Burgess Meredith) who once saw greatness in Rocky and is disgusted to see him selling out. Rocky is moreover entirely oblivious to national preparations to celebrate the 1976 bicentennial. (Boxing is for this anniversary what country music was in Robert Altman’s Nashville, only without the disorientation and pessimism.) Continue reading...
