The actor’s triumphant breakthrough has clear ancestors in grimy tales of working-class struggle, but finds a fresh, rousing idealism Peter Farrelly’s new film I Play Rocky is about the underdog-with-heart story of how a great boxing movie got made against the odds with its plucky young untried screenwriter allowed to star. So here is a reissue of that 1976 film for its 50th anniversary. It’s a forthright, rousingly idealistic film, wholesome in its essential patriotism, and which unselfconsciously shrugs off the boxing-movie’s gloomy generic inheritance, throwing away its grim traditional baggage of tragedy, cynicism and loss. It also doubles as a love letter to Philadelphia, the cradle of American democracy. Its writer and insurgent star Sylvester Stallone created the role of Rocky Balboa, a punchy heavyweight fighter just turned 30, making peanuts slugging it out with bums and reduced to collecting debts for the Philly mob; this is an indignity which infuriates his grizzled old trainer and former mentor Mickey (Burgess Meredith) who once saw greatness in Rocky and is disgusted to see him selling out. Rocky is moreover entirely oblivious to national preparations to celebrate the 1976 bicentennial. (Boxing is for this anniversary what country music was in Robert Altman’s Nashville, only without the disorientation and pessimism.) Continue reading...

The ‘new James Bond’ isn’t Callum Turner, if you believe a bunch of actors in a pub (Picture: shutterstock/ metro) The new James Bond might have just been revealed in the most British way possible – being leaked by the actor’s mates at the pub after too many pints. The identity of the next 007 has been one of Hollywood’s most closely guarded secrets, with anticipation building since Daniel Craig’s 2021 exit. After writer Steven Knight teased that someone had been selected, rumours ramped up about who that chosen actor could be. However, it’s not frontrunners Callum Turner or Jack Lowden’s mates who were ‘insisting’ their friend was Bond. Instead, Josh O’Connor has reportedly landed the role, if the murky beer-goggled details are to be believed. An insider told The Sun: ‘I bumped into one of Josh’s Golden Boy cast mates at The French House. They were recognised by a lot of people who asked for selfies, and we got chatting in a corner completely by accident. Josh O’Connor reportedly told his Golden Boy cast mates he was Bond (Picture: AP Photo/Michel Euler) The next 007 has been speculated since Daniel Craig’s exit (Picture: Danjaq/UPI/Kobal/Shutterstock) ‘Out of nowhere, and oiled by a few glasses of lager, they blurted out that Josh was the next James Bond. ‘I said it was pure speculation but they were insistent it was Josh.’ The actor has been mentioned in the running for Bond but not quite as a top contender, according to bookies. He would undoubtedly be a popular choice, having enjoyed a run of huge films, including Knives Out’s Wake Up Dead Man, Challengers, and God’s Own Country. Reportedly, the Golden Boy cast claimed he had ‘confided in them about getting the role’ after the cast had ‘celebratory drinks’ when the play finished on Halloween. While it would be silly to rule out any contender, it’s probably best to wait for an official announcement before anyone takes O’Connor out for another round of celebratory drinks. Fans are still waiting on…

According to Florence Pugh, Denis Villeneuve’s stunningly strange and breathtaking universe is the equivalent to George Lucas’ heroic space opera. Let’s hope not A long time ago, far far away, in a galaxy called the 1970s, kids dreamed of joining the rebellion, rescuing a princess and blowing up the Death Star. Peer into the cosmic tea leaves and it would become immediately clear that no amount of evildoing could withstand a neurotic gold butler, a dustbin with ideas above its station and a walking seven-foot tall shagpile carpet with a very low tolerance for disagreement. It is worth remembering this when considering Florence Pugh’s recent declaration, ahead of next month’s Dune: Part Three, that Dune is her generation’s Star Wars. And then wondering how much trouble we might be in if she’s actually right. “I think they brought back movie-going. What an event the second [Dune] was,” Pugh cheerfully told the New York Times. “It was just so lovely to be a part of something that we know is our generational kind of Star Wars.” Continue reading...
