Matilda, a smart little girl who lives with her very mean parents. She's so clever that she teaches herself to read and goes to the library to read lots of books. Matilda's family doesn't treat her well, so she plays tricks on them when they're mean.
When Matilda starts school, her teacher, Miss Honey, realizes how bright she is. Miss Honey tries to get help for Matilda from the school's headmistress, the Trunchbull, and from Matilda's parents, but they're no help at all. The Trunchbull is really mean to the kids, and Matilda, her friend Lavender, and another girl named Hortensia decide to play a prank on her.
During the prank, Matilda discovers she has a special power: she can move things with her mind. She uses her power to stand up to the Trunchbull and help Miss Honey.
Matilda and Miss Honey become friends, and Matilda helps Miss Honey by using her powers. They find out that the Trunchbull is Miss Honey's cruel aunt, and Matilda gets her to leave Miss Honey alone.
Matilda loses her powers but ends up living with Miss Honey, and they have a happy life together.
