A little girl named Fern convinces her dad not to kill a tiny piglet and promises to take care of him. She names the pig Wilbur. As Wilbur grows, Fern has to sell him to her uncle, Mr. Zuckerman, who has a barn full of animals that don't like Wilbur at first. When Wilbur learns he's going to be someone's Christmas dinner, he's really upset and sad.
There's a spider named Charlotte who lives in the barn, and she decides to help Wilbur. With the help of a crafty rat and other animals, she writes messages like "Some Pig" in her web to show how special Wilbur is. People come from far away to see the messages and the pig.
Wilbur goes to a fair with Charlotte, and there she writes her last message, "Humble". Wilbur wins a prize, and he's safe from being eaten. But Charlotte is very sick, and she can't go back to the farm. Wilbur takes care of her egg sac and some of her babies that stay in the barn, which keeps him company and happy for many years. Charlotte's kindness lives on through her spiderlings.
